Damn. Was clinging to hope there for a second. Do you press the sync button on the console everytime it loads or just the first time?

I'm getting disc reading errors during the data hive mission. After rescuing VRGL the group fight through to end at an elevator back to the surface. When stepping onto the elevator the disc takes ages to load the next section and then a disc error occurs. I first of all replaced the disc at the store then it happened again with the new disc. I have installed to hard drive and again the same scenario occurs. I have since tried Halo 3 again and it works fine.

I wonder how far Bungie has gone to get a solution. Someone said that they called Microsoft and they said it was a bad batch of discs, but if that's true, then why do the same discs also work on other consoles?

And I don't think it's my console, since it plays other games just fine.

Nope, didn't work. Pressed the guide button, then held the sync button on my controller until it reached the dashboard. Then I went to play ODST. When I selected "Start Solo Campaign", i got the DRE.

However, when I went back to play ODST without restarting, I was able to play Firefight on Crater. Gonna check to see if I can play campaign, but first, I'm gonna enjoy what little Halo I can.

Sweet the thread is still alive, but still no solution.

  • 09.27.2009 7:49 AM PDT

I don't believe anything that has been mentioned is a permanent solution. I have been reading since page one and almost every single person who has found a "solution" has come back a few pages later to report the problem is back. This sync holding fix seems to be related to fixing failed updates, which leads me to my previous theory that the problem is related to the system updates. I would imagine Bungie/Microsoft have to fix this problem within 30 days, or else many people are going to be scammed out of their money

Your pal from Area 51

I just came back after the game let me play one firefight match. My god, that was fun. However, I received the dreaded DRE again after I left the match.

So the sync button holding is definitely temporary. A more permanent fix would be greatly appreciated because I WANT TO PLAY MORE!!! :(

I WANT TO PLAY MORE!!! :(

You said it. Who doesn't. I played yesterday with my friend and it was good. Really good. Damn it, wanna play!

Hello all, first posting.

1. Getting disc read error upon the very first load screen (with all the legal mumbo jumbo and the "Bungie" logo). Sometimes it makes it to the main menu with all of the text missing (yet the graphics load) and sometimes not.
1a. To try fixing, I have restarted the console, cleaned the disc with a soft cloth, attempted to install to the HDD (get a disc read error about 15% through the process), and used without the HDD (same results).
2. No change.
3. Only getting the read error on ODST.

I have replaced this game already and both had the same results. My 360 is a year old and I have entertained the optical drive as a variable yet all my other games (about 15 of them) load perfectly (some of which have scratches all over them for some reason).

I'll keep checking the threads to see if a solution or something from Bungie comes of this. Stinks that I have a $60 coaster :(

I too got a RROD (the 4 ring of light, not the 3, which I heard is much worse. All I did to fix it was unplug and replug the video cable) from playing ODST. Happened only once, but maybe they're connected. Who knows? :(

Remember everyone to PM Test Alpha back on Page 9 of this thread with your exact problem. The more information he gets, the clearer the fix becomes

That really sucks if you get RROD from that. Not bad enough you can't play one game, now you can't play anything.

I did PM Test Alpha. Mine has been working with the HDD removed. I'll keep you posted, my son is having friends over today to play it will get a real workout then.

But as I said so far so good... Removed HDD continues to work throught 4 missions

my firefight works perfectly so dus my multiplayer
its only the campign.... i dnt mind to much as long as i got my multiplayer

Ok guys, I messaged Ninja about this already, but here's what's happening with my older 20 GB Xbox and ODST:

My DRE happens right before the second flashback (After you pick up the beacon). And only one of my firefight maps does not work (I think it's Rally Point). It does the same thing in both single player and co-op. Removing the HDD has no effect. When I play Halo 3, I can't start a Solo Campaign from the first Main Menu, but I can select and play individual missions (Except for the very first cut scene "Arrival") which I thought was very strange. Also, the map Avalanche does not load in multiplayer. All I get is the DRE. But all the other maps load and run just fine.

After reading this thread for a while, I feel like the problem could be anywhere. Here's what we know: it's happening to both new and old Xbox's, so I don't think Xbox generation has anything to do with it. It can't JUST be the firmware updates otherwise removing the HDD would be a clear solution right? And for the most part, I doubt it is the discs themselves since anyone with a malfunctioning ODST can usually play it on another Box. Even the DRE is not consistent. Sure, it's the same error message, but it occurs randomly across the game to everyone. I'm really not sure what to think at this point. Other than maybe it's a combination of, well, everything. =(

I do find it very interesting that the problems jump games over to Halo 3 though. That makes my friends and I think it might have something to do with the way the games were actually written/ coded. But if that's true than we're all -blam!- out of luck. So let's hope it's not that...

It could be firmware cause the system updates save to the system internal memory, not HDD.

  • 09.27.2009 10:29 AM PDT

Well I downloaded the game to my HDD and tried the holding the sync button on the Xbox method. Well before when it was on my HDD I couldn't get into the main menu. I get that disc unreadable message. After I did the sync button thing I got into the main menu but when I switch maps it would say I failed to load content on the game and tell me to clean the disc. Not the Xbox generic message. But when I just go into firefight right away when the game starts it loads the map but then I get the Xbox error message when the game starts.

  • 09.27.2009 10:32 AM PDT

That I did not know... but my disc works just fine on two of my friend's Xboxs. One is an older 20 GB Pro like mine, and the other is a newer Elite. Both have Xbox Live and said they downloaded the recent update.

  • 09.27.2009 10:33 AM PDT

Yea the problem is really unknown for us.
