My new data:

- Can't play anything on ODST Disc 1 whatsoever, no matter what I do (however I don't have enough space on my hard drive to install the game so I don't know if that works or not)
- Disc 2 appears to work just fine
- I cannot load the mission The Ark in Halo 3
- I cannot load Avalanche in multiplayer (or a select few other maps that I haven't pinpointed yet)

Guys i may have a temporary fix for some of you, during the dares helmet cutscene after playing as buck, hit pause then go to 'save and quit'. Reload the game and it should present you with two loading screens, then put you in straight after the cutscene. Be sure to do this before any cutscene so you dont lose progress!
Pm me and let me know if it helps out at all.

May work for some but I can't even get into the first mission lol.

Wheres it crashing for you then, during the pod scene? Just hit save and quit and reload it. Gotta be worth a shot eh? :)

  • 09.27.2009 10:58 AM PDT

Just went and tried it a few times. Doesn't work for me. I'm saving right after the Buck flashback when you return to the Rookie. I'll save immediately and then try it, and then right before the Beacon I'll save too. Either way, as soon as I grab it and the green load screen comes up, I'm getting the DRE.

I'm just curious though, is it always at Load screens people are having this problem?

  • 09.27.2009 11:06 AM PDT

Yea mostly loading screens. It happens to me on the loading screen after the first drop cutscene.

  • 09.27.2009 11:10 AM PDT

I think its just loading in general, not restricted to loading screens. While I get it at loading screens most of the time, if by some miracle I actually get into the Romeo level, I can play up until the first section at the top of the stairs where going out the door triggers loading, then I get the error. I see the "Loading...Done" pop up for an instant and the error occurs.

I got this problem three times when I was starting, now I just Save & Quit every time I get a big checkpoint. It hasn't happened to me since, now i'm at the part where you first get a mongoose.

You need to do the save and quit thing -during- the buck flashback, thats what worked for me mate. :)

And from what i can gather, alot of the crashes are during the loading screen, which would make sense as its when data is being accessed. As for why its crashing? Well hopefully bungie knows now and are working on it as we speak. :D

My money is on the new firmware not recognizing the data, or some command conflict when loading.

  • 09.27.2009 11:15 AM PDT

Your way sounds like it works but I cant even get into the game save :(

  • 09.27.2009 11:21 AM PDT

I can watch the epic drop and then the green map loading screen comings up and for awhile it will load then I will get the message.

That's when mine crashed.

I exchanged my third copy today, got home, and when I started my 360 to try the disk out, RROD!

I had my machine for two years, and it was one of the refurbished ones Microsoft gives you. It was probably it's time.

But could ODST be causing RRODs?

Well, gonna pick up an Elite after my next pay check, I needed a bigger HDD anyway. Sucks I won't be able to play L4D's Crash Course tuesday though.

Again, hoping Bungie and Microsoft can find a solution, and hoping ODST will work on the Elite.

I took out my HDD and rebooted the system. No rings anymore and the game played well past where it kept freezing on me.

Another issue: I was just in a Forge match on Sandbox in Halo 3 and upon its end I got another DRE.

  • 09.27.2009 11:26 AM PDT

I have been sending the Test ninja Alpha everything I have done to try and fix it and the results of that. Also told them everywhere I get the message and don't. Keep them informed as we need to explain what is happening and helping us.

I wouldnt like to think ODST causes redrings as its a hardware fault, else bungie and microsoft will get quite a few compaints id imagine.

Good luck with the 360 elite, let us know how it goes. :)

I've sent test ninja detailed reports of whats up, though, if this isn't fixed by Monday (within gamestops 7 day return period), or at least if we aren't given a somewhat tentative estimated time of release for the fix, I'll likely be returning my copy to gamestop for a refund and I'll repurchase it when it works.

I will always win

I was playing this game on my halo 3 360 so it is only 2 years old and my xbox 360 started to freeze with this game in it on the second to last level. so then i switched to the multiplayer disc in ODST and then my system started to freeze even faster and then my xbox got the 3 red ring of death.

1. I get Disc Unreadable Error too often, considering the disc appears to be flawless.
2. On the Main Menu of the game, where it ought to read "CONTINUE SOLO GAME" it reverts back to "START SOLO GAME".
3. On the Main Menu under "CAMPAIGN", I can reload the 2 levels I have beaten so far. My last SAVE was after the checkpoint at the beginning of Level 3 (where Rookie is holding Capt. Dare's helmet in his hand), but Level 3 is not unlocked under Campaign. I am a Halo fan to be sure, but I am getting tired of replaying parts of the game I have already beaten... I wanna get on with the story!
4. Out of curiosity, I entered the Xbox360 Hard Drive (through dashboard > Settings > System Settings > Memory) and looked into the listing of Games, and THERE IS NO LISTING for Halo3: ODST. Looking under the Halo3 listing, THERE IS NO GAME DATA for Halo3: ODST there either.
5. I have earned 65G for 7 Achievements so far in Halo3: ODST... each time the game shows me progress, for example, that I have 3/5 for the "Eww Sticky" Achievement then the game either locks up (freezes) or goes Disc Unreadable on me, I lose the progress on said Achievement and must begin the count over again, at 1/5. That is also tiring.
6. Game Stop (the store where I pre-ordered & bought this game) is offering me to swap halo3: ODST for a different title, but THIS is the game I wanted, paid $65.09 for, and THIS is the game I wanna play. PLEASE BUNGIE, help us out here, we obviously need a patch.
P.S. My console is over 2 years old, is now considered an "Xbox360 Pro". I bought it about 2 weeks before Microsoft unvieled the black Elite model. My console has a 20GB HDD with over 7GB free. I have had it serviced once for E74 error (which yes, did render the entire unit unusable) but it works just fine on every other game I have ever played over the 2+ years of enjoying it, with the exception of a rarely occuring lockup (freeze). Halo3: ODST has locked it up more in the few hours of playing it than in the previous 2+ years history.
EDIT: After just reading the Question: Is Halo3: ODST "causing" Red Ring of Death errors, I must add this note too... The last time I tried to start Halo3: ODST my Xbox went into a fit, showing E68 on the screen with a bunch of text similar to when I got E74, and the lower right light flashed red. On rebooting the Xbox360, it started up fine, and I'm gonna go back to playing Gears of War 2 now. I'm considering returning Halo3: ODST to trade even up with another $65.09 valued game, but I really don't wanna do it!!
Again: PLEASE BUNGIE, help us out here, we obviously need a patch.

I'm having the same dre issues, but has anyone tried playing it on a different 360? It works perfectly on my friends xbox but is unplayable on mine, so the disc is in perfect condition. It seems like MS should be working on a firmware update/fix for this, so idk what the guys at bungie can even do.

50,000 Kills in Halo 3 Over 2,000 Exp HS - 47 Brigadier Grade 2

Mine works fine on both my and my brothers 360 and mine was a launch 360 so I dont understand this problem at all to be honist, yet my friend whos xbox that is 6 months newer than mine gets DRE.

  • 09.27.2009 12:09 PM PDT

I'm dumb. How do you PM this test ninja guy anyway?

  • 09.27.2009 12:09 PM PDT

I did this. Community>People Finder>Type in "Test ninja Alpha">Send message.

50,000 Kills in Halo 3 Over 2,000 Exp HS - 47 Brigadier Grade 2

I was suprized that there was no mention of this problem in the Weekley Update due to the fact it seems like its effecting so many people.
