"I was born with Halo, live with Halo...die with Halo."
Bungie forever7 <3
Guide to Canon in the Halo Universe

Im a Bungie veteran. I have and always will serve them well.

Thats so weird. This happened to me only one. Which is really weird. A couple of days after the game came out, my xbox said the disc was unreadable somehow and never did this before. Then the next day it was fine and still is.

Boingo Boingo Whoopsy Knickers

So what the -blam!- does this all mean, then? The update may never come out, as far as i see it. I may just swap my friend's xbox for mine to play it until the damn thing comes out. after all, its the only game that gets the error.

This thread isn't for complaining about the actual game and its content. It's about an error that prevents players from playing at all. Do that in some other thread, since it's not helping our case.

Anyway, I tested out the Brutal Legend demo to see if it would receive the error and it did not. I thought it would after so many others had it. I'll play through it again to see if it comes up, but I think it won't for my xbox since it didn't for the Batman: Arkham Asylum demo.

Ok, tested the demo again and no error. For me at least, it seems to be isolated to mostly ODST and the multiplayer disc, since those are the only games that I have that get the error.

We pretty much know that it's an update that either Bungie or Microsoft released that's making it go haywire, so let's hope either of those companies can do a fix that will maybe revert the changes, since we cant do that ourselves.

EDIT: BTW, if you haven't already, call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to put a ticket in for the ODST error bit and tell them it says "Disc is unreadable" along with answering the other questions. And if you're lucky like I was, you'll get a very helpful person to receive your call who will then escalate your call to technical support (I think that's what they said) and you'll get another person who knows more about it.

I gave them two weeks.. that's as far as my patience can last. So I will send this back, get my refund (thank god for Amazon's 30 return policy), and be officially done with buying Bungie Games.

Utterly ridiculous... 2 freaking weeks... and nothing.

You know.. if they had made a statement when this error first started popping up.. something like "We are aware of the problem, we are working on a fix, we are sorry for the inconvenience" maybe I would have stuck with them... but I guess we are only important enough to warrant attention from "1-800-my-xbox"... what a bunch of baloney..

  • 10.06.2009 4:14 PM PDT

Yarrrr~

I have also tested out a few demos, these include;
-Fifa 10
-Forza 3
-Brütal Legend (MUST... HAVE...)

And none of them give me any errors as well.
It's only Halo 3 and ODST.

I had the ODST Disc Read Error already and pretty much can't play either disc and I just got the error on the Brutal Legend demo for the first time. I played the BL demo last night through the whole thing without a problem, but it happened today when I wanted to play through the demo again.

So, I called xbox support and logged my case with "AJ."

He basically told me to take my ODST game back to Best Buy and see if I get unreadable errors with a new disc...so...guess I'll try that? Not sure if I kept the receipt...suck!

Well, if they don't have any news of an update coming before October 13th, I'm just gonna trade this game for credit to MW2.

I don't want to stay here twiddling my thumbs forever.

@NLShadow09
I too had this issue and resolved it by starting the xbox while holding the controller sync button on the front of the system until the dashboad completely loads.

What I did was to hold down the sync button on the 360 itself and then hit the power button on the console and continue holding the sync button until the dashboard came up. The controller was NOT on during this process.
Still can't finish ODST but at least Halo 3 loads again and is playable. For more info see the post on page one and my post on Page 40 .

@Bespin
Bungie has replied on this thread... on page 40, 41, 72 - search on "Urk" his text will be gold/yellow. While I'm sure it is not enough info for most, at least someone from Bungie has spoken, now it is up to us to report this situation to MS. And for MS to step up and admit they have an issue and resolve it. They also need to put a flag into their response system for ODST so that when we call, the person on the support line will know that they need to "listen" to what we have to say, "document" what troubleshooting we have already done so that we don't all have to repeat this stuff to them over and over again... And we wouldn't be doing silly stuff like formatting the hard drive or returning our systems for repair when THIS IS THE ONLY GAME THAT IS NOT WORKING. (Yes I know that some are also having issues with other games, but I'd say that the majority of us are only having an issue with ODST after running through most of the troubleshooting steps also listed in this thread...) I say that if they did have ODST flagged in their system, then the ones of us who had a dissappointing experience calling MS Tech support would have felt better about what occured. But if MS can't or won't properly flag this game or train their staff in how to listen and call up the correct "solutions/listening strategy", then we aren't ever going to get this issue resolved. That's my two cents..

@Kola Cell
I believe Urk does work for Bungie.

Well, I found a trick for letting me play some ODST from the beginning to the point where you activate the item to go to Dutch's driving level.

After a certain point where it goes to the loading screen, I saved and quit, went to the dashboard, and cleared my system cache. I turned it off and restarted it and I could then resume my saved game and load the next level after a few steps to where it would load.

Unfortunately, when I activated the Drone Survellance thing for the next level, the error popped up and it's been very persistent for this particular level.

I'll continue tomorrow to see if I can find a workaround.

blarg.

ODST works fine for me, but thats probably cause I just got a new 360 (Elite). :)

When u put the disc in it prompts that you can only play the game if you update your 360. If it dosen't then u may have a problem.
:(
For those 1st gen xbx guys out there I think it's time to upgrade.

You're right. I don't think any of us got an update when we first played the game. I should probably contact that Microsoft support person I have the reference # to. See what they say.

I remember having this issue with halo 3.

I've got to ways to work it out for you.
1)Call X-box live customer support
2)This is pretty much what Microsoft asked me to do:
2,1)Go to the HDD selection and press the combo x x lb rb x x, This will remove all updates and sometimes helps with this issue, first you should try to read it without updates, then update and try to read.
2,2)Try your disc at a friends house, or try a friends disc at yours. It may be a scratched disc that's causing the problem
2,3)Remove your HDD, if it plays now it's the HDD that's causing the problems.
2,3,1)Format the HDD, then recover the memory through XBL.
2,3,2)
2,4)If none of the above have worked, either repair or replace your x-box.

personally I'd recommend contacting XBL support, they'll give a more accurate assitance.

Oakland Athletics will win the World Series.

i played firefight at my friends house and it was really fun. Too bad I will never get to experience it in the the comforts of my own house. maybe they should just make ODST for the local arcades and malls. they could bring back the glory days of time crisis and to keep with the theme of rip off they could charge 3 dollars a play

My halo3 worked fine until the latest system update.
Since then my halo3 disc wont work properly,nor my Halo3 ODST disc.
And the need for speed shift demo freezes and the console have to be restarted.
None of my other games,such as fable2,gow2,rainbow six vegas,gta4,skate2,have this problem.they all work fine.

I know my 360 isnt broken,i wont -blam!- pay -blam!- to get it repaired since this is the updates fault,it has nothing to do with the hardware.

I have paid money for a product which i cant even use.Its stupid and just so godamn emberassing.

two weeks and no update,no official statement,i -blam!- hate microsoft right now.
And Bungie,i wont ever buy anything from u guys again.

that is a load of tosh. this should have been done when you send the 360 in for RROD repair.

  • 10.07.2009 9:26 AM PDT

I understand you guys are trying to help but why would we go and "upgrade" our Xboxs to play one game? Also the box says for Xbox 360. Not the latest Xbox 360 out there. And I have a refurbished Xbox which has the jasper chipset and the new BenQ drive. So my system is not "out of date". Seriously something is wrong with the company when they MAKE you buy a new system to play games that should already be working on it.

  • 10.07.2009 9:32 AM PDT

hahahha yea right, i am not gonna buy another xbox, especially when i can still play other great games like COD and GOW, if bungie's games dont work then i think it's bs cus so much money on the games, and i refuse to spend more money on sending my xbox in for repairs or buying a new one
