Well good for you and your new Elite. I have an Elite that is 18 months old. And you think I should upgrade? I have a 20 year old Nintendo that still works, but I should spend hundreds of dollars every year and a half to replace my 360 for the same system? That is the dumbest comment I've read on this board.
I'm actually going to try the comment about deleting the updates and disconnecting from XBox live and see what happens. I had been stuck at the beginning of level 2 even when it plays at all, but for some reason I was able to complete a few other levels today before it locked up. When I restarted and continued the campaign, it started me over at the 2nd level again. Very frustrating to have a couple of hours worth of game play wiped out.
Still waiting on my call back from XBox support on the issue. And you do have to mention "Disc Read Error" if you talk to them. If you say "freezing" they just tell you there is nothing you then can do except send your system in for repair. Was on the phone with them for 30 minutes but as soon as I mentioned the phrase "Disc Read Error" it seemed to unlocked the magic door and they promised they were looking into it.
