Sounds like its a problem with older dvd drives

Seems like it could be the laser going out since this seems more common with pre-hdmi xbox 360s.

Also if someone copied it to the hard drive and is having problems still maybe the game was copied over and was corrupt because of laser problems.

As a person who's game is working I feel I can be a bit impartial to this.

From what I've been reading (main reason I'm following is a friend of mine is having the same error as everyone else) but it appears as though it has nothing to do with the disc itself, just the older 360's (1st generation). Which has been mentioned here by a few users. Some people have done everything including throwing the kitchen sink but with no luck, while everyone else is just kind of retrying the same old methods that were posted for the previous 5 pages that it didn't work.

Clearly, by all the people that have posted..it's not the disc that is bad but something with the console itself and how it is reading the disc (maybe it runs off a driver the disc doesn't have for some reason etc). In the end, we all know Bungie will at least fix the problem unlike Epic (Gears of War2 multiplayer is still fun but man is it glitchable/(host system = wtf?) I'm sure they're trying to piece it together...like most press conferences, they won't have one til they have an answer. So be patient (by all means keep bumping this thread to get the attention, I agree with that). Just trying to save people time to quit bothering exchanging discs etc (unless your refund is about to expire, then I would). They'll figure it out and you'll be able to play in no time :)

I have a friend who encounters the same error right after the opening campaign cut scene. Sounds like a bad batch of disc's.

Yeah when I first popped the multiplayer disc in I saw the dvd unreadable screen and was a little scared as Monday I left my xbox on all afternoon. The disc worked eventually.
I've had my xbox for almost 3 years and it has never rrod'd.

Yes, really

in might be your dive laser. easy fix, but it voids your warranty.

dont hate the player, hate the game

Everyone whos having a problem with their Halo odst disc please list where you are living so we can see where it is mostly being affected.

Close enough...I bought the same game and had a disc read error, just on the other disc.

the main difference is not only was it other dis, but you exchanged it and it worked. We can't do that. It doesn't work.

My system was made 2008-03-29, not 1st gen but not a jasper chip either. It has played ALL my games fine but for some reason ODST is the only one that decides not to work. I have played it up untill the end of dutchs mission and then it keeps crashing. I have also tried starting from the begining again but nothing works. Right now my ODST disc is as good as a paper weight.

Liar. That disc is way too light to be a paper weight.

I'm just hoping that when this is all over, I won't have to buy a new xbox 360. That would bite. Double post my bad.

disc unreadable....South carolina

  • 09.23.2009 1:02 PM PDT

*Sips tea*

This is a rather unfortunate problem.

First generation Xboxes have always had these wierd problems. Remember the Dead Rising crashing problem that perminantly skrewed your 360?

Honestly, here's what I'd do all those with a 1st gen Xbox: I'd get a new Xbox. You have the buggiest system on the market right now, and you'd be better off for the future if you got a new one. If you don't have the money, try selling your current one and making up the difference by selling a few games. It's well worth it.

My 360 was manufactured 2008-06-04, and i am from England.I am having the same problem,i got to the third from last mission where the rookie slides down the lift shaft cable. It starts to load the next level but crashes about 40 seconds in.Tried all the mentioned fixes and tried to install it on my hdd, it gets to 83% then i get the error.Think i will return the game and get the new Batman game instead.

I posted this yesterday in a thread. I got the disc is unreadable thread but the before it does that, the sound goes out. I cant hear anything at all. I actually just played about 30 minutes of firefight and the sound is not working but it hasn't crashed. Weird.

I understand that their is a wall of text, so every now and then I will pop in and say the theory again. We have come to the conclusion that the problem is not the connection, discs, or hard drives, but actually the 360s themselves. Almost Everyone with the problem so far either has a first generation xbox or at least an older model. The following techniques DO NOT WORK
-cleaning the lens
-taking off the HDD
-cleaning the disc
-cleaning the xbox
-replacing the disc
-clearing the cache
-downloading to HDD
-deleting from HDD
Bungie and Microsoft have not said anything about it yet, so we can only assume that they are looking into it.

Everyone in the hog:P

Well if anyone is interested.

Just traded my xbox and odst :) Got a £100 for it not bad eh?

Then just bought an elite with odst bundle :).

Probably jumping the gun but my xbox is going to break sooner or later, so may as well and i could see this happening on other games.

Well? The million dollar question. Is your ODST working on your new xbox??lol

Bungie Test Team
Test Ninja Alpha
The best one of the three!

Since different people can have slightly different issues, we want to get an idea of the various issues that people are seeing individually. For those of you having problems similar to this, please PM me the following:

1. A brief description of your specific problem and what you've tried to fix it. Please do not recap the thread.
2. Remove your hard drive and play through the same sections of ODST that are failing. Does that make a difference?
3. Put in Halo 3 and play through a the first few campaign missions (on easy, it'll go quick). Do you see the same behavior as in ODST, or does it function perfectly?

Edit: I'd like people to try playing Halo 3 now. For many people it's worked in the past, but the piece of information I'm looking for is does it work now.

I like Six's death, the way the scene was made makes it look like Six is in a nightmare, powerless and tired to stop the unending waves of elites before she can't carry on anymore. Like trying to wriggle free from a spiderweb you just can't do it and end up tiring yourself in panic.

If any game comes up as unreadable, replace your XBox, unreadable disk is, if checked for scratches, the XBox.

Hey, JOHN BOY, let us know if it works on your new Xbox when you get around to setting it up...maybe we can start solving this mystery.
