I do have a lingering suspicion that they told me there is a resolution just to get me off the phone. :) I guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I'm with rsattler on this, there should be some sort of flag on their database that comes up when they type in words like "odst" and "disk read error". My rep spent an insane amount of time rooting around in the database just to come up with the disk replacement solution (which, as Urk has already stated, is totally wrong.)

On a side note, I have been needing updates for each game I've played today in order to play online (the updates that come up during the game's initial loading that require you to sign off live). I put in World at War, and needed an update. After I needed to re-download the map packs. The same thing happened for Call of Duty 4 and both Gears of War and Gears of War 2. Is anyone else having this happen to them? I wonder if its like a fix to the other games? I'm a little confused, because the others I've talked to haven't had to update today.

Yes, I have noticed that also with quite a few games, the last week in particular. I've been testing everything I have to make sure they work before spewing out the "huge wall" on page 90. lol.

I assumed it had something to do with this, the previous system update or the next update that is coming out in Nov. Don't know but it is something to note.

So is there a solution or not? Because I'm still getting calls from Microsoft's tech department saying they're still working on it.

I mean, since a disc replacement won't work (we've all tried that) and Microsoft isn't going to be all ho-ho-ho on our asses and ship us all new 360s, I'm going to assume the way they're going to fix this is with an update via xbox live.

I've only been notified by four people who weren't given resolution. If you call and you aren't offered a resolution, please private message me with the ticket ID and a brief description of the support call.

Can anyone confirm that the resolution is to send in your XBOX? Has there been any resolution outside of that?

Urk - last time I called I was on the phone with MS for an hour. I don't have time for that today. Can't you just post what the resolution is so we all don't have to call or we know what to expect when we call? I will call this weekend.

  • 10.21.2009 10:15 AM PDT

I'm being told by the support phone people that the resolution (based on my specific symptoms) is a 'console service'. Got to wonder what this entails... Anyway, I suppose I'll get a coffin in the mail and ship it to 'em. For about the FIFTH time.

Are they charging if we are out of warranty?

I was told by two separate people on the phone that because this is an 'exceptional case', the repair is free, 'even though your xbox is out of warranty'.

However, you have to supply your own shipping box (they told me how to print a UPS label off of support.xbox.com, so the shipping is free also)

We have to send our console in? For one game? There are many other more important games I would rather be playing now and in the coming weeks than this. Then it will be gone for 2+ weeks (took me 3 weeks last time). Not to mention the time spent calling and explaining that you're disc is clean and sparkly and you've tried without a hard drive since this is one that likely can't be done online. Urk, please let us know exactly what the resolution is on here so we know whether our tech person has any idea what their doing.

I guarantee that any of hundreds of thousand Xbox owners that post on these and other forums would make better tech support because we seem to know more about what is going on than they do.

IANAHE, but my guess is that some EPROM firmware of some internal hardware component is nawsing up some aspect of the Halo engine. We already know that the engine does some weird I/O stuff (viz.: Halo 3 slower operating off the HDD than off the media, which is so weird I can't imagine how you'd even go about it)

You'd be surprised how often commercial software (i.e. that costing millions of bucks a year in maintenance licenses) is screwed up by some 'smart hands' swapping out a disk controller on a server, with some incompatible detail in the FC controller firmware. Speaking as one of the people who has to diagnose that kind of crap, I mean. I can understand this as a feasible reason. And therefore I can understand the 'console service'.

Does it make me happy? No. But then, we're talking about software developed by game developers here, not proper programmers.

;-P

Plus - thanks to Urk for seeing this through to its 'end'. I'm grateful you stormed the gates for us.

I suspect, that for legal and/or liability issues, Urk can't state what the resolution is going to be. Plus, MS is their publisher of record so I'm sure there may be some politics involved, just my opinion.

Gotland Rulez!!!!

So the big question for me now is not to get ODST up and running, but will we see more of these "New DVDs" which OP states is the fault?

In which case i'm pretty screwed!

Ditto. Sending the console in for repair as a "solution" to this problem is ridiculous.

Also, the fact that this is still not resolved after a MONTH is equally, if not more so, ridiculous.

Has anyone that didn't get a resolution yesterday/last night received a resolution today? Did you get a call from MS? Just curious, I've heard nothing.

So the resolution is a free XBOX repair, from what I'm hearing. Except I haven't heard anything from the phone calls I've received. Then again, I haven't received one in the last 4 days.

Maybe I should call them to see if they say to send it in. But I forgot my damn case number. -blam!-!.

The Serial ID of your Xbox Live Console should be printed on the back side of your console, right about the Video/Audio output jacks and the ethernet jack.

Well I finally tried and called XBOX support after following the thread and waiting for some other resolution. Luckily it was a painless 20 minute call the rep didn't make me jump through hurdles after I explained the problem and told him all I had already tried and was then escalated to another level of support. The resolution I was given is indeed sending it in for a repair. Seeing as I have a launch day console I was long out of warranty but they did tell me for this special case I was being given a free repair. So that's my case.

I would suggest that anyone having this problem call support because it doesn't seem any other solution is coming for us.

Send me a PM of your email and I'll get you a lockerz invite. 100% legit Thx CarloMorris for pic.

Banshee Master

As soon as I send it back there's a solution... That figures...

This is my first post on these forums. I completed ODST a few weeks ago and had no problems with this disc read error. But when I put the Mythic disc in, within a week or so, I was having massive freeze up issues in the middle of matchmaking games. So I searched the issue last night and found my way here. I decided to try Batman AA and the same freeze issue happened right away which matches the symptoms people are talking about. Are any of you seeing the issue with the Mythic/matchmaking disc?

I have the extended service plan at Best Buy so I'm taking my console their tonight and getting a new one, just to be sure. My question is, is this going to be resolved anytime soon for new consoles? I don't want to bring a new one home, decide to play ODST in a couple weeks and get this issue again.

Thanks

Just got off the phone with support, call went well and only lasted 26min.

First tech "Niles" ran me through the normal tests but I told him I had called a few weeks back and already checked for scratches, even returned the disc and got a new one and I told him I removed all my mem cards and hard drives last time. he was very cooperative.

He then went over my account with me, confirmed my email, phone, address and serial number.

He then put me on hold for a few minutes while he contacted "David" a resolution specialist who briefly confirmed the steps we had taken. less than a minute.

He then asked me what did / did not work with the game from my experience. I gave him brief details and I must have satisfied his criteria.

He told me that my warranty had expired on 04/22/2007 BUT due to special circumstances I would receive this repair for free.

I said "Hmmm sounds like there is something really wrong to have my xbox fixed two years out of warranty for free. Do you know what is wrong with it?" and his reply was somewhat marketing-ly dismissive but to sum it up he said that if I send it in it will undergo some diagnostic tests and any defective or broken equipment / components would be replaced free of charge to me.

he then gave me a reference number and told me where to get a shipping label and he also told me I would have to find my own box and to take it to a ups store and to expect getting it back in 2 - 3 weeks.

Whole call only lasted 26 min. Im pretty happy that at least if there is a cover up or a defect they are going to take care of it for me for free. the inconvenience of waiting sucks but at least Ill have a freshly reconditioned xbox when it comes back.
