Faith can save you when all hope is gone!

Have you tried playing ODST? any problems?

I played ODST for 3 hours last night. I was able to continue my Legendary Campaign right where I left off before the disc read failure. No glitching, no problems, ALL GOOD!

And did I mention how quiet the Jasper is? Seriously, this thing is awesome. My wife even said something to the effect of "is it even running?, it doens't even sound like its on!"

BTW, I don't think the Live update had anything to do with ODST, and they are giving you a brand new XBOX for trade-in, so CALL THEM NOW! It took 4 business days for my to get my replacement.

I wonder if that's true for all inbound machines. Mine is a May 2008 Elite, and it's been in "Repair in Progress" status for over a day, making me wonder if they're actually doing something to it...

Good point. The xbox I sent is was an Aug 2006 model. Maybe there is hope for your 08 Elite to actually be fixed instead of dumped and replaced. Whatever they are doing, I bet it won't take long.

Good luck.

I just found a problem. The xbox customer support line just told me some imported discs are unreliable, because they could be coded differently depending on thier location. My location is Puerto Rico. Everyone should post where thier discs come from to make sure we can rule out coding problems.

How can you sit with all that smoke up your ass?

They are talking about region coding, and it was a BS way for them to get rid of you. You have to be firm and direct and whatever they ask you to try, say that it doesn't work. Unless you are buying your xbox games from Europe or China, you should not have any problems with the region code. You live in Puerto Rico, that a US territory;
It's Not The Disc!

  • 10.29.2009 2:47 PM PDT

Yea mine has been in repair status for over a day. I am surprised they gave you a BRAND NEW one. Did it come all packaged in the Xbox 360 box as if you bought it at a store?

Also the coding they were telling you about was NTSC region. It is displayed on the back of the box or on the disc itself. North America systems and games have NTSC, Europe system and games have there own. Another one is a PAL but I do not know which region it is supposed to be. Anyways you can not play different regions with different system regions. So that is all they were saying, NOT were it was made.

Ok, well, I called Xbox support (again) today, and it turns out that the previous SR# did not match my profile. As such, they cancelled that one, and made a new order with a new reference number for me and will be sent in 3-5 business days (again). Ugh, the humanity.

Although, they did add that the label will come with a box as well, so I don't have to scrounge around for one.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, appears things are going to work out this time, finally let's hope.

The second engineer that called me (two days after the first telling me to send it in (I provide the box, they provide the label from xbox.com)), told me that the repair process for mine was going to be expedited and I should see it sooner than the normal 2-3 weeks. He then informed me that they would be sending me a box and an expedited shipping label - I told him I had already sent the box in my own packaging. lol. He apologized for the first engineer's misunderstanding of the handling of our ODST issue. I told him I just wanted to get a working 360 back the sooner the better (in a nice way of course). The best conversation I've had with any of their tech support to date. Can't wait to get it back as it arrived at the repair facility today...

Hope yours comes soon!

Already discussed, and 90% of all discs were made in either Mexico or Puerto Rico.

Supposedly, it has little to nothing to deal with the Disc Unreadable Error.

No, no retail packaging, but it had all of the clear stickers on the disc drive and remote reciever (little black oval). It also has that "new smell" to it. It came in the same kind of box that they sent me a few years ago when my original xbox got RROD.

Speaking of which, this is the poem that my sis-in-law wrote for my birthday the other day, printed on a small tombstone:

Here lies Todd
Beneath this sod:
What took his breath?
Red Ring of Death!

I thought is was pretty freaking hilarious!

  • 10.30.2009 5:54 AM PDT

lol that is a great poem.

So I've been reading up on this thread since it was like on page 4, holding my tongue and patiently waiting for an update that would magically fix my disc read error. I've had Halo 3: ODST since it was released on the 22nd of September, and started receiving the disc-read error on every start up about a week after its release. This error also applies to the Halo 3: ODST multiplayer disc, as well as the original Halo 3 disc--but every other game works fine. Anyway, since then I've noticed people are posting that they are getting a free repair/replacement (Jasper console?), so I figured I would try my luck. After about an hour on the phone with a very strange Canadian-esque Tech Support guy, he told me that I have to send in my console for repairs, and that it would cost me $99.99 because my warranty has expired. So here's my question: Are the people who called 1-800-4MY-XBOX and are getting free repairs/replacements due to the disc read error still under warranty, or did the guy I was speaking with try to fast talk me into giving his company $100.00 to repair something I did not break? Thanks for your time!

Nope - not under warranty. Having read every post on this thread, here's what I think you're supposed to do:

1. Call the 800 number.
2. Complain about the error, and get a Service Request #.
3. If the 800 number folks don't offer to repair for free, send the Service Request # to Urk via PM.
4. Try again...

Someone mentioned a similar experience to you, and offered some advice about what magic words to say - ODST, Campaign Disk, no other games affected (whatever the actual case is). That seems to lead to the free repair.

Thanks for the magic words, Fragged31337! Getting a free shipping label sent out to me this weekend, apparently saying that "only the Campaign disc is unreadable" was the deciding factor in getting a free repair.

Sometimes your the hammer, sometimes your the nail.

Gripes..

I just received my H3 Special Edition back from repair. The thing red ringed on me during a firefight match.

So the console returned and looked to be in great shape. I fired the console up and ran through the setup process. It required updating and did so without issue.

I inserted ODST and attempted to play a round of firefight. A few minutes into the game all Ambient sound in the game ceased functioning. All you could hear were grenandes and guns. No music, charecter voices, nada. When I exited the map I received the now infamous "disc unreadable" error. This is now occuring on both discs. I cannot play a multiplayer match withough getting this error.

Has Bungie been in communication at all with M'Soft about these issues? This is starting to look like amateur hour on both Bungie and M'softs end.

Well you sent it in for a red ring. I guess in that case they don't check if your system would be affected by DREs.

Yeah, I got ODST at launch and I didnt really have problems except poor loading time on the campaign disc but when I finally put in the MP disc is when I started to get DRE. It effected a bunch of my games so I had to send my 360 in. It looks as though they gave me a new system Im not sure, its working for the most part. The only problem I've been getting so far is when I try to play Fallout 3, I get DRE after selecting new game. So, I went and got a new copy but still the same thing. Everything seems to work fine when I take the hard drive out.

My question is, has anyone replaced their hard drive's yet? If so do you still experience DRE? Oh, and fyi installing it on my hard drive hasnt made a difference.

Microsoft acknowledged the problem and told me to send it in.

1. I Shipped it to Microsoft on Thursday last week
2. they received it today
3. fixed it today
4. shipped it back to me today

I should get it by Thursday. A 1 week turnaround is not bad.

Here are the last 5 digits of my serial number:

OLD:63805
NEW:63505

So it seems like the one I am getting back was made in the same year, same factory but 3 weeks earlier.

This does not give me hope that it is fixed.

Let me clarify. I did not receive a DRE prior to the RROD.
The game played perfect for two weeks, then RROD.
If I had seen the DRE message believe me it would have been mentioned in my support case to M'Soft. The DRE errors started after I received my console and the required updates were applied.

I wish I was still legendary.

I wish MS would come out with a downloadable patch for this, that could be done off their website like the NXE. It's really annoying to have to send in a 360 only a short while after getting it back from repair.

Regardless, I'm glad there's actually a solution now. Have the email guys been told how to respond to this as well, because when I emailed the support all I got was 'clean your disc'?
