Just a little update for all of you. I removed my 120GB HDD (upgraded) from my Xbox 360 and the game actually loaded and played through with no disc read errors or anything of that nature. I would rather play with my Live account and everything on my HDD though.

This tells me that it is most likely not a physical disc issue or a hardware issue but most likely a software based issue from the code on the disc communicating with the software stored in the HDD.

Thoughts?

I'm not convinced. Not yet. I have two seperate working hdd (20s) and ODST doesn't work on either. I will try again tomorrow. But remember all, don't give up! Just yesterday, a man stormed into the Microsoft headquarters with nothing more then a homemade flamethrower made out of a leaf blower! Fight on, New Mombasa!

Glad this thread is still alive, though not surprised I guess. So here's some new info from my experiences. To recap quickly, my DRE occurred right after Buck's flashback and picking up the Beacon. I have a 20G HDD and it fails with or without it. Every time.

I was feeling bored and a little curious, so I rented the game from the local Blockbuster and sure enough, it works just fine so far. Not sure what this means yet.... more to follow....

I bet that Bungie is trying their hardest to fix our problem, but you know Microsoft. Always the ****block. =\

With any luck, Bungie will come onto this forum post with "And on the seventh day, on the seventh hour, we bring you out of the darkness, and into paradise."

But thats just hoping.

Well, I could just be vending my frustration out on Microsoft, even if they are evil corporation hellspawns. If they release an update by this weekend, I'll apologize and lick Bill Gate's shoe... for a million dollars.

I bought my Xbox 360 Elite in September 2007 for Halo 3. Didn't have any problems with it until May of this year when it got the E74 error. Had it sent in for repairs and when it came back it worked fine. Now that I bought Halo 3: ODST I'm having problems. The game runs fine for the most part which seems to be better than most people. But about once every hour the game will freeze for a second on that frame then move to the next frame that it would have been at a second later and freeze there and continue this about 5 times. It hasn't happened in loading screens or when moving between areas of mombassa with the large doors. It did happen once on the main menu though. This also happened to me on the Halo 3 multiplayer disc in the matchmaking lobby. I went and exchanged my copy for a new one but I'm still getting the same problems.

People were talking about going and buying a new 360. If it comes down to this being the only fix I would just go buy a new 360 elite, package up my old 360 in the new 360's box and return it to the store for a full refund. I shouldn't have to pay for a whole new xbox so I wouldn't care if this is being dishonest.

I've been having this happen in Halo 3 games, lobbies, and now in ODST for the past few months. It's like a T.V. sort of lagg because the game is still playing and if you're in a party they can still hear you. I hate when that happens but it's not a gamebreaking glitch/bug.

Here's my story.

My config:
Xbox 360 arcade
Model: Falcon bought march 2009
Accesories: Hard drive 20gb, memory card 256mb

I got the exact same problem with odst. My game freeze just before Buck stage. When i restart my xbox i got a lower quadrant red light. No message on the screen. I got this error as long as i pulled out the disc. If i install the game on my hard drive every thing work perfect. I never had this kind on error before odst. The halo multiplayer work flawlessly.

Hope bungie will release a update or something for that

Hey guys, I'll summarize my experiences just for the hell of it.

Bought ODST first day it came out, popped it in the machine and started the campaign. Watched the first cutscene, then I'm sitting in the pod ship falling down to earth. As I'm falling, BAM! disk error. Tried to boot up the game again, and now it wont even go past the 2nd screen (it just sits at the loading screen doing nothing).

So I tried firefight to see if that works... nope! The game will just sit at the menu screen trying to load the maps. It gets to 20% loaded, then just goes back to 0% and does it all over again. No maps work.
Brought the disk to my buddies house, everything works fine on his. We've played campaign and firefight on several occasions now, and everything works perfectly.

Back to my system, the multiplayer disk works fine, I've played several games through matchmaking. Also, when I take out my 20gig HDD, campaign and firefight mode works 100%, wtf is up with that!! I've heard people say *install the game to the HDD*, however mine won't even let me do that. I get an unreadable disk error after a minute or two of installing.

This has been so annoying, what a cluster_____ this whole ordeal has been. Cheers to you Microsoft, you sure know how to release a -blam!- product (RROD and now this bull). I doubt a fix is coming anytime soon; Microsoft already has our money for this game so I'm sure they're satisfied.

Okay, now Im -blam!- pissed. Just recieved my ODST copy, So I decided to find the Mythic skulls. Pop in the mythic disc, get to the title screen, press start, as I want to change my armor.
Some message comes up from Bungie "thanks for buying ODST..."
I press A, then BAM. Xbox shuts down and now I can't turn it back on. I unplugged the power cable, and plugged it back in, still nothing. I just used a 12 month card too. So, yeah. Pissed.

EDIT: OK, Screw that. We just lost part of our power, which explains why I couldn't turn my xbox on. Works now.

Yeah, it helps to have a clock radio or something in the same room so you know if you actually have power in the room you're trying to play your game console in.

Anyway I'm starting to suspect that the cause of my own problems with ODST seems to be with related to an overheating problem. I was getting consistent DRE in Data Hive. They'd always happen at the start of each of the cutscenes and I could not get them to stop even when not using a HDD. Then I'd get mad and stop playing, come back around an hour later after I calmed down to try again, and then it magically works and I was able to finish the level. There was no physical change from my set up an hour ago to that moment.

Thus I concluded the only thing that was different between the 2 times was how hot the system was. It's all unusual though cause my system wasn't that hot when ODST started DRE on Data Hive. And the only time I had serious issues with my system overheating was during that really hot summer 2 years ago when I got a E74 RROD. Just food for thought though for anyone else wanting to try solutions.

I had same thing happen to me at first and all I did was clear my cache on my HD. Now everything works fine. You could try this if you already didn't. Wish you best of luck.

It's the disc drive more than likely. The 360 has one of the -blam!-iest drives ever and the older consoles seem to never want to play newer games a lot of times and/or freeze up during play. Some work flawlessly, but most don't. Most don't really notice this problem cause MS sent them a newer console with a newer drive in it when they sent their console in for repair.

I feel really lucky then because my 360 premium with 20gig HD is from when they first came out and I never had any problems yet. "knocks on wood" I just wish a fix hurries up for you guys.

Hi guys i have the same problem but my disc wont read after certain cutscenes but works on another xbox.
i have just got comfirmation that microsoft are dealing with it and they have the whole of their technical department workign on it.

I have just found out it is the firmware update that was released and not the consoles or the games, the update is evil and you dont need to buy another xbox just be patient as they are trying their best seriously this isnt a joke i have just spoke with them and the comfirmation is they are fixing now.

KEEP BELIEVING IN BUNGIE AND MICROSOFT THEY ARE HERE FOR US!!!

Yeah tried that, didn't work. I also tried to delete any ODST files from my HDD, however there isnt even an ODST folder in my memory blade of the dashboard. Sooo frustrating lol.

Hey guys, sorry to hear that everyone is having issues with ODST. I have the same issue as well. However for the last couple days my disc has been running fine. I noticed that everytime I tried to install to the HDD that I would get unreadable all the time. Usually I have had trouble with installing disc unreadable games to the HDD since they copy the bad sectors that cause the error to the HDD as well. All of my games including Halo 3 and the multiplayer disc for ODST work with no problems. The latest ones to give me trouble have been ODST and Marvel Ultimate Alliance II. Only thing that's worked for me has been to clean the disc and repeat if needed.

I've got the problem as well, my DRE comes up EVERY time I pick up the helmet in the first mission, as it's attempting to load the second mission. Very frustrating.

I have two 2009 Xbox 360 and Halo ODST runs without problems. It's the austrian PAL version. I haven't found problems in german speaking forums, maybe this information is useful for Bungie.

Is anyone else still bothering to all MS? I am. Oh and if it's helpful, I played a lot of firefight before playing the campaign. When I played campaign I got the DRE. I opened a door and a brute turned around and yelled at me and then the game got DRE. I got a good laugh out of that until the game wouldn't work again.

  • 09.29.2009 8:46 AM PDT

I'm glad its working for you but its shame you had to get a second 360 for it to do so.

  • 09.29.2009 8:55 AM PDT

Just for fun.

I have tried 3 discs with the same issues, even from the HDD.
My brother says its fine on his (slightly younger) 360.

My original Halo 3 now has the same problems.
All my other games are unaffected.

This is doing my head in!!!!

I thought consoles were generic, obviously not.
