I checked this thread last Thursday after we had returned our copy for another and had the exact same problem. Once I seen so many people had this problem we returned ours to gamestop and I told them I wanted our money back, no another copy, because there was no answer on if/when this was going to be fixed. They said it wasn't normal policy to refund money but because of the kind of problem it was they were giving our money back.
If you have a copy that doesn't work I would suggest not waiting to get your money back. If/when they get the problem fixed you can always buy another copy.

My mythic disc works great, my campaigne disc works right up too Data Hive then crashes just when you reach the guy on level 9. then dirty disc error...:( of course campaingne disc dosent work at all unless i install it to the hard drive, which completes 100% so its weird that it crashes even tho there was no error on install

Im having the same problem with my disc, i recently bought 3 games, Top Spin 3, Batman: AA and Halo 3:ODST.

I've had no problems what so ever with Top Spin 3, its a brand new copy but obviously its a very old game.

With Batman and ODST i constantly get dirty disc errors, and unreadable disc. The only way i can get either of these discs working is by playing an old game for 15 minutes then stopping and playing ODST.

I've never had any problems with my disc drive but it seems that new games are giving it problems. Im on my 2nd Batman disc with the same problems.

1. Problem: 1 week after the date of purchase/normal playing, both of the Halo 3: ODST discts failed to work and gave "Disc unreadable" error. Very strange. Is it possible that one of the achievements activated somekind of bug?

2. Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST discs are functional WITHOUT the hard drive (No error message and the game proceeded to the menu screen).

3. Halo 3 also DOES NOT READABLE. Same "Disc unreadable message (WITH hard drive).

My conclusion: something is not right with the hard drive. The game discs are ok, and so are the Xbox 360s.

I already bought a new xbox. 20GB wasn't cutting it and there was a 50$ rebate for an Elite. Sell my old one, and this game, I just spent 100$ on a new xbox.

  • 10.01.2009 9:50 AM PDT

i have an elite too it dose the same thing, i am thinking the game was designed under the newest microsoft update not yet released.

How come everyone else can play while we sit here on this thread for almost 2 weeks waiting on a word that will come but we do not know when? Your onto something with updates but it has to be one of the older ones. Every time I call Xbox and tell them I go unreadable in a demo, or that ODST goes unreadable after I install it with no problems. They tell me something is corrupt on your HDD. Nothing is corrupt on my HDD so the only other thing that comes in mind is the updates that save to the system internal memory not HDD.

Those with problems playing with HDD, but can play it without it. Go through all your memory and look for corrupt data and delete them. If there is none re-download your GT because it doesn't show up as corrupt, but can become corrupt.

This is what I think anyone can help me refine this or say something that might be wrong.

Sorry about the continued delays, dudes (and ladies). We're in touch with Microsoft and they're telling us that you should be calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX to get tickets up and going.

They're still not 100% locked in on the issue, but they are making progress. But no matter what the problem is, they've assured us the resolution will be handled through their support center.

If you are told by a customer service rep that they will not help you or that you should be going elsewhere for support, please ask them for their Customer Service Request # and report it to me directly via PM.

Again, we know this sucks hard. Hopefully they can zero in on the problem and get you all up and working asap.

Sweet!!! I called earlier this week and got a reference number and they called me back saying the problem is going to take a while or something. Should I call again or is that call enough. Nice it actually sounds like something is happening there!!!

Also I have no idea how to delete system updates and go back to the Old Dashboard. If you do the system start up thing again it doesn't delete anything as you will still have the NXE update the whole time. But if you know how please tell me. I have been trying to figure this out forever.

Nope. If you have a reference number, you don't have to call again unless you need to follow up for some reason.

@urk Communication is key to keeping us happy (imho). I'm sure we all appreciate the update. Thanks :)

@KRayons90

There is no way to officially downgrade, expecially after the summer update. Also any downgrades would be against the TOS and likely to get you banned and to a degree possibly illegal.

I have been keeping an eye on this. Please let us know when a viable solution is available.

I hope a fix is available soon as I am unable to tell whether this is my disc or the console at fault since I can't return it to my place of purchase and I dont want a wasted trip if a simple patch will fix it.

Yea all my friends who dont have sgt johnson can play the game fine but i know 3 people plus me who have him and it screws up a lot could that be the problem? I'd trade anyones problems for mine. my xbox freezes at start and randomly a lot ever since i've played ODST but it didnt happen till after i beat the game. is it possible there is a virus attached to a certain achevement? well i'd like to try to pinpoint the problem if anyones with me. heres a list of my achevements everyone list your common achevements so we can narrow it down.

Healup, Dark Times, Tourist, Junior Detective, Boom Headshot, Trading Down, Tayari Plaza, Listener, Ewww Sticky, Uplift Reserve, Tuned In, Gumshoe, Kizingo Boulevard, ONI Alphasite, Dome Inspector, NMPH HQ, Super Sleuth, Kikowani Station, Data Hive, Coastal Highway, Campaign complete: Normal.

My xbox and game were fine until I beat Normal campaign but now i might have to buy a new system just to turn it on.

Thank you, urk.

The problem is definitely related to the Xbox themselves, as I now have a new 360 and I recovered my gamertag, kept my original hard drive in and the games, demos and everything else works fine. Guess we will have to wait on Microsoft

Just returned my copy HALO 3:ODST(DRE "The CAMPAIGN disk") to zavvi for a refund, I've HAD enough!, and don't even care if it gets fixed!

Bye Bye Bungie :-)

Thanks for the "update" urk. Now this is in no way directed at you but the only progress that's been made in the last week is to ring Microsoft? You've got to be joking...the last time I rang Microsoft support they were completely useless and reiterated everything I knew about the problem I was experiencing in a most patronising way. Not to mention the clear language barrier between us with me being English and the chap on the other line having trouble communicating with a very thick middle-east accent. I bought Halo 3 the day it came out and couldn't play that for over a week until my faulty disc was replaced and now it's ANOTHER problem stopping customers from enjoying a game that many people purchased on launch day. I work in Software Development and an issue like this would not be tollerated by our customers so I'm having a hard time understanding why this situation is any different.

I didn't want to do anything illegal, I was just wondering cause that seems like the issue to me. But I bet Microsoft knows and will fix this so I wont even try to find a way anymore. But I wasn't going to do it if it is illegal. I am not dumb.

  • 10.01.2009 1:59 PM PDT

actually i've tried playing the game without the hard drive and i still get disc unreadable messages.halo 3 and odst are the only games that mess up on my xbox with or without the hard drive

  • 10.01.2009 2:03 PM PDT

That still leaves the idea of system updates getting corrupted cause they do not save to the HDD.
