Yea you're correct and anyone coming on this thread and saying this has nothing to do with Bungie obviously is being paid by bungie or they're delusional. So this only happens with bungie games on bungies ten year old engine but it has nothing to do with them? I mean I played that Burger King game and it played fine SERIOUSLY how cheap of a disc was that thing on and you're telling me ODST IS THE GAME WITH THE PROBLEMS? What a joke Bungie has become they don't compare to INFINITY WARD A TRUE DEVELOPER

@masterseymour06
We have stated that newer Xbox have had the problem and a lot of old ones have NOT even had the problem. It has nothing to do with how old it is. Also this is a Xbox 360, not a PC. All the parts are EXACTLY the same. The only thing they did was put easier to update Disk Drives and a new CPU and GPU that produce less heat. ALL XBOX 360s ARE THE EXACT SAME THING, CAPABILITY WISE!!!

I had the same problem. I opened up the game, in the store, and wanted to do Firefight via LAN. The game started after openening and closing the disc drive several times. Then when I went to load it, it would load up to about 20% and then go back down to 0, do that again, and then finally say it is unreadable.

I had to leave the store without getting the game replaced because they couldn't say it was the disc, or my xbox. We went back to my friends house, played the Mythic disc for a few matches, then tried loading his game in my xbox, it worked fine.

So then the following day we tried again, it still didn't work, so I installed it, and now it works fine. I am rather displeased though because it is a rather large expansion to have installed, and with only 10 GB left of memory, it hurts to install it.

I tried the email support method, and was surprised to get a reply. Not that there's any new info, but there you go. They were very polite, though:

--snip snip--
Thank you for contacting Microsoft online support for XBOX. This is Henry and I will be helping you today with this issue.

I understand that you purchase Halo 3 ODST game and when you try to play the game, you receive an error message saying "This disc is unreadable". And you wonder if there is a way to fix this.

We appreciate your inquiry and we are glad to be of help. Both Microsoft and Bungie are aware of the issue and are looking into a resolution.
--snip snip --

They suggest later on that I call the support phone line with some specific info:

--snip snip--
Note: Please provide your consoles serial number and be ready with the following when you give us a call.

1. Kindly tell whether the issue occurs on the Campaign Disc (Disc 1) or the Multiplayer Disc (Disc 2).
2. Does the issue occur random, or consistently at the same location?
3. Does the issue occur when the game is starting up, or during game play? If the issue occurs during game play, what part of the game does the issue occur?
4. Have the discs been tried on a different console? What happened?
5. Was the issue resolved by removing the hard drive?
--snip snip--

Based on this exchange, I speculate that this issue genuinely is being researched. As yet another software guy, this seems like a really gnarly problem to me - it's an anti-pattern of the worst kind.

On another note, I just got confirmed for the new-new-NXE-new-update beta program, and it'll be interesting to see what epic fail that causes...

I thought we ruled out faulty discs given the fact that people that have exchanged for multiple replacement discs still encountered the same problems. I also know there've been reports that marketplace demos such as for Brutal Legend have also been afflicted with DREs since ODST came out. I can say personally that replacing my discs didn't help. I don't know about the validity of demos DREing since I haven't expierenced any happening (yet). Point is making ODST an on demand game isn't going to fix the problem for everyone.

How does that rule out faulty discs when you replace them with other discs?

  • 10.16.2009 1:32 PM PDT

BTW, how many people here have Halo 3 installed to there Hard Drive?

Incase many of you didn't know, but Halo 3 did have a similar problem with its campaign mode.

Since you're in the researchin' mood, you won't find it too difficult to drum up instances of DRE at just about every major title release as well.

And we're not turning a deaf ear (or a blind eye). We understand that it seems that way, but we're frustrated too. We've got an open channel for you to communicate with our test team in the first post and we'd like you to stay in contact with support if you've already opened a trouble ticket. We're still in direct contact with our publisher as well to try to resolve this as quickly as possible, but unfortunately we don't have much to offer at this time, hence the silence.

And yeah, I know that's aggravating for the people who can't play.

I had to get 3 halo 3 discs because they kept developing a ring on the disc. Luckily Best Buy is awesome so they replaced it.

Oh really bud too bad when you do a disc read error search all that comes up is HALO 3 BUNGIE ODST and obvisously that speaks volumes. The random disc read errors you're referring to genius were related to Xbox 360 issues. Your little issue with ODST son has gone way beyond that. If all have is condescending comments for people you ripped off with your junk game save it. You can ban me again pal but that doesn't make you right. Please get back to FIXING YOUR SCRAP GAME NOT HARASSING PEOPLE YOU SCAMMED.

Because...for a lot of people the discs work fine without a HDD plugged in, or not connected to live, or when installed to HDD?

Because that will help you. Look, EVERYONE is pissed. I doubt that you have even considered installing it to HDD, or removing your HDD, or using Alkaline Prodigy's startup method, trying in on another 360...just try the other methods before ranting.

It's MS fault, IMO. Halo 3 has been broken since august, but works on a friend's 360. It works on mine without an HDD in, so I'm relatively sure that this was at least PARTLY caused by a faulty update that not many people noticed due to H3 being an old game by that point in time.

Thanks Urk for sayin' something.

However, I am more than sure that someone is going to have to respond again in the near future in order to pacify some people another day.

Mine works fine, i would suggest just phoning up xbox support.

Thanks urk for updating, but why wait? Just come on and say the progress so we don't feel ignored. It shouldn't be that hard unless you are one of the techs in helping to fix our issue. Anyways still thanks for the update.

We are more than just frustrated.

If you have this error, please file a complaint with Federal Trade commision:
https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en

Somehow we need to get answers as not only am I stuck with a disk that I can't get a refund on, but it has also effected my console.

Don't know if it will help, but this is going no where...

You people are TARDS.

There is no way the disc could affect your console unless you installed it to your 360's internal memory unit and it had some sort of malicious code on it. Given neither of those are possible, and if they were more consoles would be affected, I don't quite see how you can claim a piece of plastic destroyed a console.

Your console isn't broken. If it is (RROD, E74), it's because of a fault in the way they're built, NOT because of a new game.
The game might doesn't work because since a dashboard patch was released on the same day, it may not have been tested and caused errors with the software.

How many of your other games work? Which ones don't? Of those, which ones work with the HDD removed and the console disconnected from LIVE? Of those, how many work when installed to your HDD after using alkaline prodigy's startup method?

I swear, some of you have no idea how this stuff works, even less than I do. IF the game was capable of messing up a 360 by doing something to the internal memory, many more consoles were dead.

Today I went to play rock band 2 and it worked and but my profiles were gone.... I managed to get odst to work one day and played halfway trough one level. It froze next I got to the start up screen and it didn't save my game. next day it said continue campaign error again... stated it up no saved game. It is f*&kin with me.... arrr ajfklajkldgfgahio.

Anyways long story short.. Just bought a new 360 elite and all my games play fine now FU Microcock U just stole 300$ from me.. I should not had to buy a new one....

How does that rule out faulty discs when you replace them with other discs?

Because unless the store's entire shipment was faulty, then the chances of exchanging a disc for another disc that's also faulty is extremely slim. And I asked specifically to the guy at Gamestop that I dealt with and he said I was the only one coming in with this problem. The problem discs have also been reported to work perfectly on other 360s. My multiplayer disc was working fine on a different 360.

The xbox of my friend made 4 big circular and deep scratch on the disc at the first week of release. Is not a scratch made from a human error, the scratch are exactly on a 360 degree, all around the disc.

First he wasnt able to play about 2 maps then the number got bigger and bigger.

He sent his disc to Microsoft and his game cost him $100 in total.
