I don't read the books, but thats sound more like my first idea. I would be an anti-vehicle weapon, since so many people think the fuel rod gun is anti-personnel. Maybe a five round chamber instead of three because you need to kill in one mag. Since they are needler, they should have slight tracking, a little more than normal neddlers, but ONLY on vehicles. And while double-action is great for most games, Halo is more about simplicity. They should explode when they are near a vehicle and miss, not on a direct shot, although that would be very hard to do. Explode when they hit objects. I do think your idea is better than our original design. You take it down to one ammo type, one trigger, and NO PINK HAZE. I thought that was stupid idea in the first place. Your concept art, though it might be low quality, is a good start. Have the needles sticking out of the sides, like the normal needler, but it should rotate. A big manual lever on the bottom would be like a bolt-action rifle, except slower, and would turn in and pull to the back of the gun to force new needles into the slots, and then launch back into position. I am verry happy you found something from Halo lore that can be used and interpreted in many ways. Again, even though I don't read the books, the lore is still important to me because of the game's storyline. Overall you took the weapon in the direction that I favor, yet is still roughly balanced. PLEASE NOTE: In an earlier post , I stated the large needle would have no homing whatsoever. However, that was when it was a anti-personell weapon; as a anti-vehicle weapon, homing is accepted.
I think it should only be 3 shots still... It would be a covenant missile pod basically and would be a personnel and vehicle weapon. I think it should detonate no matter what. It wouldn't be hard for them to explode when the hit objects, thats what spike grenades do. I guess they could slightly home on vehicles but I still like the manual detonation ability which would make it a more of a skill weapon, and not something you can just get and pwn anyone anytime since it is powerful. If the shard hit a vehicle and exploded the shard spray would be considerably less but the vehicle would take a great amount of damage if not destroy it. But in the book it basically stipulates that the shards from the explosion do the damage. Another reason for not wanting 5 rounds is because it would make it far more bulky. Unless you were to do something like it was the only weapon you could carry, but that would be stupid. Maybe you could have ammo in non convenient places so as to make it a struggle to get extra ammo, or no extra ammo at all and just leave it as is, a multipurpose weapon that will kill anything that gets in its way. It wouldn't be a key weapon like the missile pod but it would be more versatile then the missile pod and more powerful to compensate for the low ammo. The weapon should be sized for Grunts but be uncomfortable for them to use. Elites wouldn't use it because they never stray from their Plasma Rifles and Swords or Carbines, it's their way. Bigger than what is comfortable for a Grunt but compact enough for them to use as well as the Players in the game.
