I personally think that we need a little more history.
Bungie is going the right way with Halo: Reach, and I've seen other forums(on bungie.net and other sites) which describe other possibilities, mostly game adaptations of the novels.
However, I have 2 rather decent, well I believe so, possibilities, and I would assure you that I am not the only one with these ideas.

One:
Covenant Civil Wars.

The separation of the Elites to the Covenant during and between Halo 2 and 3 in greater depth. I know that much of this is done during Halo 3, however, a little more emphasis on how it happened, and what happened - Such as in ODST during the Tayari Plaza mission, where you walk past a group of dead Brutes and Elites and Buck makes reference to a battle between the two prior to his arrival - and more battles such as that.

Also, how was the covenant formed? Were there battles, conquering and conscription, such as the Romans did? Was it peaceful? There is no history of the covenant in any of the games. I'd love to play as the Brutes when the Covenant and Elites show up, and try to bring them into the Covenant, and a resulting war, or as the Elites trying to defeat them and bring them into the covenant. Either way, it would be awesome.
New weapons and vehicles could also be included, weapons and vehicles that would seem "outdated" and "obsolete" compared to those in the main trilogy.

Two:
Forerunners.

What were they? How did they live? What did they do? How did they fight the flood? How did they discover the flood? Did they actually create the flood in an attempt to defeat a greater enemy?
I'd like to know more about the forerunners. The main trilogy is over, and there is no need for the mystery anymore. I realise that this could be a vast story, and bungie may not wish to do it, however, I think it would be a great success.
Even if this game was a completely different style to the others, if it was an RPG for instance, it could outline different possibilities of where the flood came from, and why the forerunners had to do what they did to destroy them.
Or it could be another FPS, in which you are trying to destroy the flood without using the rings-of course you would fail in the end, but it could seem like your winning, and have a kickass final cutscene when they are used- or even be a soldier during another war with a greater enemy, which the flood is created for.
Forerunner history would be exciting, new, unique and interesting.

There are many options to go for, in any future games. And of course, lets not miss the obvious of what happens to ol' mate John-117 and Cortana, will it really be how it leads to the Marathon game from way back? Or does he just die? QUESTIONS! SO MANY QUESTIONS! >.<
Point of the story is, there are so many things bungie can do for future halo projects, there are endless options. Don't let us down.
Ps, ODST is pretty damn awesome.
Double Ps, Please Lord, do not give the Halo franchise to 343 Industries. It COULD(yes, I'm saying could, don't jump down my throat) be a major disaster for Halo.

I agree.
Halo 2 have you a little sample, by playing as ol' mate arby, and then it kinda just disappeared for halo 3.
It was a bit of a disappointment really.

I agree..we need more info on the Covenant and on the Forerunner...For instance I would be very happy with a game that took place in the Halo-verse but you didn't even play as a human...like you could play as a forerunner against the flood...or play as an elite against the prophets in their initial confrontation.

....

I definatly agree with you on Halo history but I do believe that a new halo game should not come out so often, I mean every Halo game thus far has been awesome albeit that Halo Wars is the Weakest of the bunch and it too was really good.
Reach is going to be epic, you know our boys up in kirkland are preping this thing to blow our minds with Halo Absolution, but maybe the franchise can take a break not because the franchise might burn out (I dont want our Halo becoming another Final Fantasy or worse) but because the Halo games take time to craft and weave to perfection, I mean Halo:CE took almost four years to make and release and it is regarded as THE game Halo2, Halo3, and ODST are measured up to. With ODST in my opinion being the closest to reach that pinnacle. Halo is an amazing franchise because bungie has really done their jobs at crafting an awesome story with some of the tightest gameplay around. We need to make sure that the games become more not less in the Halo universe. For example I highly doubt that with the destruction of the hierarchy of the covenant, that the rest of the prophets (yes there SHOULD be more because the Prophets are a race, not just 3 wierd looking elites) would take the defeat lying down the fight may be over but the war probably is'nt. My other idea may be to make A game out of the "first strike" novel showing how the chief completed his mission that the original spartan team set out to do before the covenant invasion of Reach. What seems to me to be the greatest question would be on how to answer "what happens to the Chief and Cortana?" that question has so much potential, yes it would be a radical idea to begin the events of marathon being that so many people have thrown that idea around, have a franchise shift titles literally from halo to Marathon but at the same time Halo 3 made a huge end puncuation with its story, how can it continue without it feeling like if they made a fourth Lord of the Rings: the return of sauron(I think thats how you spell it)the finale was so puncuated, it would make almost any game that would take place after those events seem like an unneeded continuation. If there is one studio who can perhaps make that continuation happen with greatness and with depth, it would be bungie but bungie will be (maybe) breaking off of Halo after Reach is complete I mean they are already in development for their new IP with Jason jones at the helm. so the torch gets passed to 343 industries which may or may not handle Halo correctly. I know, I know frank 'o conner is the head over there but frank o conner did'nt single-handedly make Halo, dont get me wrong frank 'o conner is an awesome Halo dev. guy but bungie are the gatekeepers which is the whole reason Microsoft released them albeit for the price of the franchise itself, but microsoft released bungie from the shackles because it knew that all original bungie members were ready to leave, so what do they do let them go gave them back their independence, because bungie is not bungie without its original memebers (the grizzled ancients) so the question remains where does the road go after Halo:reach most likely to 343 industries. In my opinion though Halo should wait for bungie to release their new IP, build it up, make its sequals (cause you know its gonna blow your proverbial mind!) and THEN and ONLY then surprise us 6-10 years down the road with the second coming of Spartan 117. Damn my fingers are numb, I love this franchise see ya'll on the ground troopers.

Yah i would also like to play Covenant again. There culture is a bit of mystery. When I started learning about them in Halo 2 i couldnt wait for Halo 3 to see the rest of the Covenant side to the war. Sadly it dissapeared. I would like it a lot though.
