Brothers in Arms

We were stranded on a remote part of this so called "Halo" ring world and we had lost all of our comunications. In short, we were -blam!-. But our objectives were clear. Link up with the other survivours.
We gathered what ever supplies we could salvage. Unfortunatly our squad had suffered casualties but atleast our pilot managed to crashland with our Watrhog still attached.
- Sergeant, I've spotted em' sir!
- Show me.
Corporal Graham led the Sergeant to where he previously had kept watch, switched on the nightvision to his sniper rifle and aimed out over the treetops.
- Look over there sir. See the smoke?
The Sergeant was relived. We could hear it in his voice.
- Graham.
- Sir?
- Scout out a rout. Hurry!
- Sir yes sir!
While Graham ventured into the dence vegetation we started to detach our vehicle from the hull of the Pelican. Our pilot was in a state of grief. It was first after the return of Corporal Graham, when we were all set to go that he finally opened his mouth.
- 17 yers.
- C'mon Pete, Let's move!
At first I thought he didn't hear me but the Sergeant knew what was happening. He told me,
- Jenkins, you go get him.
- Ok Sarge.
I got out of my seat and walked up to the sad old man.
- C'mon man, you wanna' die out here? It's cold!
He turned his head and looked at me. I though to myself, perhaps he really did want to die out here.
- No, you're right. Im sorry. It's just...
- That's aight'. Let's go before the Sergeant gets mad at me again.
- JENKINS!
- Coming Sarge!
We had been following Graham on foot for an hour and I remember feeling vulnerable at this moment. It was just to dark to feel safe and the sound of the engine made me really nervous. What if we where being followed? I wished we would atleast turn on the lights. I just had to say something.
- I got a bad feeling about this.
Apparently I wasn't the only one. I heard my own words echo in my head and it made me realize that we might arrive to late.
- So how far is it to our destination Graham?
- Shut the hell up Jenkins. We're almoast there.
Suddenly, we heard the distinctive sound of our enemies weapon firing. We all jumped in the Warthog and the Sergeant drove as fast as the terrain allowed. Once we got up the hill we were forced to stop. It was just to steep to continue in our current direction. But we had the enemy in sight. The Corporal yelled,
- Grunts in view Sarge!
- FIRE!
Just before the sound of Grahams Sniper rifle momentarily impaired my hearing, I heard the sound of Assault rifles somwhere down there. Sergeant Campbell was signalling me to follow him. We needed to get in range in order for us to flank and engage the enemy.
This was my very first encounter that I've had with the Covenat. I remember hearing my heart, pounding like crazy! Not that I was able to hear anything else at this moment but, the whole experience was just... surreal!
- JENKINS!
My hearing was coming back. The Sergeant seemed worried.
- Stay close Jenkins!
As we hurried through the jungle I heard the sound of Grahams rifle again. For a moment I felt secure. We were fortunate to have Graham covering our backs and the Sergeant knew what he was doing.
The sound of Assaul rifles and Plasma pistols was geting louder. Once we got close enough, we saw how the Covenant had pinned down a few Marines to our left. They were using the wreckage of a Pelican as cover but the enemy had managed to surround them.
We found good cover a few paces to our right. There was a large tree that had fallen to the gound. From this position we got a clear view of our enemy and I was surprised over my own cuorage. I was so surprised that I did not hear what the Sergeant was telling me.
- God damn it Jenkins, FIRE YOUR WEAPON!
And so I did. We had a good spot and I was firing like carzy but our ammo was running out. A large dark monster on two legs was pointing at us and roared. I started to shot at it but the bullets just bounced of. I had to reload. Just when I got down our cover started shaking. The enemy had turned their attention to us. Green plasma was flying past over our heads.
- Jenkins, use a grenade!
I threw it in the direction of the large beast and as I peaked up over the cover i saw a swarm of Grunts heading towards us.
- Sir! What are we gonna' do sir?
- Stay down Private!
Graham was also running low on amunition. He had to make every shot count.
I was getting really scared. As I threw my last greande rondomly over the cover I heard the moast plesant sound that I have ever heard in my whole life. Someone was firing from the gunner seat in our Warthog. But it could not have been Graham becouse I could clearly hear him firing his rifle. It was Peter Wenthworth, our pilot. I was so glad that i yelled,
- Pete! That crazy old son of a -blam!-!
I know today that we all owe our lives to him. When the sun came up we could see the devastating effect of his actions. Grunts and Elites laid bloody and muddy on the ground.
This was a day of days.
