why wouldnt they be able to get up
They wear 1000 pounds of body armor...
And jump 6 feet in the air :)
But I will agree, *lying* down in reach is not the best of ideas. (Warning, this is assuming that Halo Reach acts relatively simillar to Halo 3, which it probably will for the most part).
Will it be harder to be seen?
No. So long as the enemy looks at your general direction, those little red letters with your gamertag on them will give you away every time.
Will it be harder to get shot?
Absolutely no. Look, people are good enough at aiming guns already in this game where they can shoot others in the head with an unscoped sniper rifle (or at least they only show us the times that they hit). Just because you are a little head poking over a hill doesn't mean that they won't snipe it off. Try it on Vahalla in the Snipers Playlist. Move up your side of the hill until your head is barely visible from the other side of the base, see how long it takes for someone to shoot it off.
Furthermore, I'm assuming you can't just instantly jump up and run around when you are lying down, yes? You would have to get up first and then run. Otherwise all you can do is crawl. I don't know about you, but I would absolutely never go prone. If you are found, and if you are being shot, the last thing you want to do is hunker down into a ball and roll back and forth in a corner hoping that they can't shoot you because your a small target. You want to be able to run, strafe, jump, ect. Just get into a BR vs BR fight against anyone decent, and you will notice that they strafe, sometimes in one direction, sometimes randomly. Why do they do this? Find out yourself, for every time they strafe, either hold still, or move in a beeline to avoid grenades. Find out how well that works :)
In halo, mobillity is what keeps you alive, not your shields. By making yourself harder to hit, you buy yourself time to get the killing blow. Might I add that this not only applys to long range and medium range weapons like snipers and battle rifles, but to close range weapons too. The major reason why people suck at AR combat is because they can't break away from the beeline, making themselves easy to hit. If they instead strafed and jumped and properly burst fired their gun, they would find that they would be able to even take down BR users at close range.
I went slightly off topic I suppose, but if you go prone, you are just waiting for someone to come up and stomp you out of your misery. Just crouch behind the curvature of a hill or a box. Seriously, what cover is going to be short enough to allow you to crouch down that would also let you fire back? Only thing I'm thinking of is hills, and you can just crouch behind those and still have your mobillity.
I voted yes but i agree with you on just about all of your points. You have correctly explained what it takes to operate at the upper levels of halo and win for the most part. It is indeed all about mobility and staying still can be a death trap (but not always).
However despite how i agree with you, the reasons you provided dont imply that the prone position should be out of the question. It only makes sense that a spartan who can bench thousands of pounds, have the bodies of Olympians (in their teens non the less)shoul be able to be in the prone position. It could have its uses just as crouching has its uses.
Not only that but you could simply press the other joystick down to operate it because as of now i dont think that button has any uses. I dont think it would take anything away from the game and in fact think it would add a level of stealth that is badly missing from the game. And of course it would have to be play tested to make sure that it cant be abused but i think it would indeed work.
further more i think that it would aid in stealth since at a distance people most often notice targets that are moving not those that are moving slow. Thats a simple property of human eye sight. Added to that so long as a reticule isnt put exactly on an opponent, provided its in range for the reticule to go red, it would be easy to think of a prone spartan as a dead one. So it would actually add more skill needed to play the game which i think is always a good thing to add.
