And the Halo 1 weapons weren't the original weapon set or anything. They were just what was given to the Marines aboard a Joke-class cruiser.

Have you even played through Halo: Combat Evolved? The final chapter of the final mission in the game involved a fantastic warthog drive that was the forerunner to the long motorway runs in the number 2, 3 and ODST

That's where I have problems. Why the hell would a military vessel need a giant winding hallway like that? I could understand a master hall going throughout the ship, but with twists and turns and random jumps? It makes no sense!

It's more feasible to have straight hallways with 90 degree turns. with as few ramp as possible, too. That way, the limited space on the starship is used as efficiently as possible. Also, this is a military vessel, so extra measures would have been taken to make sure no space got wasted. Yet all laws of common sense got broken when you start going through that last level of Halo:CE

wasnt that the inside of the halo ring??

No that was inside the Pillar of Autumn.

Also those twists and turns are tiny in comparison to the whole ship, so it really doesn't matter. It runs along the spine of the ship, and the ships design was honeycombed. That could be why there were necessary turns and twists. It was also one of the oldest Warships still around, and had actually just been revamped with a whole series of new digs so the space needed for technologies became minimised.
That maintenance area along the spine of the ship makes a bunch of sense from where I'm sitting.

As for the jumps, that area wasn't meant to be used in that fashion (hence the poles in the middle of it) and that massive jump, theres actually a lift in front of you as you go over the edge that is seemingly not in working order.

Actually, I think the course is longer than the ship, being 3km, when the ship is only a little over 1km, due to twists and turns.

The honeycomb design would be a reason that there wouldn't be long, pointless curving hallways and even more pointless steep ramps in the ship, because those turns and ramps would end up compromising the ships basic design, the "honeycombs".

The thing about larger equipment being replaced by smaller equipment may be true. Realistically though, they would have used the extra space for extra storage or install equipment that the ship wasn't able to have before. They might not have had time to put stuff in yet, though.

At times you u-turn, that could be an explanation for the extra 2km. But thats a good point nonethless.

The honeycombs, I was thinking the point where the internal framework meets the hull might not be perfectly in line, creating twists and turns in the corridor.

No, the distance indicator shows direct distance. The final run of Halo 1 is a huge disrepancy and should be swept under the rug (or complained about in endless threads if 343 had done it). It's mainly due to the POA's external and internal artists working completely separately.

See this for Loftus' 3d construction.

If this thread was an attempt to mask his anger with humour, it was a failed attempt, and pathetic.

If this thread was an attempt at humour, it was also a hyper fail. I didn't laugh once.

In either case, it was a fail in my books.

lol, you're cool. Wish I was your humorless friend.

Still doesn't justify the windy rampy pointless hallway.

Of course it doesn't! Why would there be an obstacle course aboard a ship?

(sighs) Who knows...

Why would a starship have a hallway that extends 2 km out of the front of the ship(referring to your linked picture)? ;)

I think we both have always agreed that the ship makes no sense.

There's the added fact that the POA's MAC was simultaneously broken and in perfect working order.

Cortana said the MAC wouldn't work, but later on, after some kind of covenant weapon scored a major hit on the POA, someone said the MAC just went offline, which would imply it worked beforehand.

Philosophy and philology is my game.

I think we both have always agreed that the ship makes no sense.

Having started the chain about the Pillar of Autumn, I feel it only neccessary to add this final suggestion and logical assumption.

1.) Given the other views allready shared on the thread, it is conclusive to suggest that the PoA was an aging ship and (like much of the UNSC military grade frigates) a converted-civvy vessel. The numerous twists and turns would account for the majority of the interior being extracted and scraped/recycyled or whatever the UNSC does with used metal (wait until the RAM resets the items on the map probably. Fourth-Wall pun!
Thereafter the civilian facilities are removed, the infrastructure is laid bare and required amenities and utility are installed as required.

So imagine the whole experience like purchasing a large PC case and fitting all the components only to find you measured everything wrong and much of the space between the components and the shell is left bare to unappealing albeit functioning properties.

2.) Otherwise, Bungie were just too inexperienced at the time the made Halo: CE, and just stuck to their campaign-metaphoric-virtual-corridor-effect-in-3D.

Still, makes for great gameplay.

Maybe, but why would civilians or military personnel install a 3+ kilometer long hallway on a 1 kilometer ship? O_O

My answer is simple, but could but true: the only reason the 'hallway' appears to wind around is because the way the installments were positioned after the re-fitting process. Simply exclude the living quarters, arsenal, storage bays and all other military needs - including the obligatory grunt party disco and swimming pool - and you'd have the world's largest interstellar empty pocky box.

Alternatively, the marines needed a method of burning off steam, and decided to use the space for the annual race-off. Speaking of races, did anyone not think that the race mode on the original Halo: CE to be one of the quirkey and most unappreciated of the custom game options? Who wants to drive around Sandtrap in circles on a Mongoose/Warthog to get that open-spaced speed thrill when you could actually do it competitively in the past?

harhar
why talk so much bout the PoA
i think their made to be like honeycombs cuz bungie wanted tomake it seem logical!!
haha, it was just an excuse to make it seem more realisti instead of just a map in a game!!

I love the entire Halo series, Halo 2 being my favorite of the games. I think that the universe is compelling and the story is deep, sweeping, and powerful. The hidden layers in the Halo trilogy and rich details of the backstory in the novels are something I love to be lost in, and im greatly looking forward to the story that Halo: Reach will weave. Bungie has carefully and lovingly crafted a mythic tale that will stay etched in my mind until the end.

Good stuff, that was my daily dose of laughter.

In Halo 3, the lock on feature for the rocket launcher doesn't work anymore, that kinda sucks though.

Also, what is your favorite weapon to use and what would you choose between other powerful weapons at your disposal?

assault rifle and battle rifle is my best combo for H3, but for ODST, i would stay with the original two weapons, or with the pistol and plasma pistol

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”

The Black Chapter!

In WW1, trenches were designed with twists and turns to minimise enfilading fire and enclose and shell explosions. maybe the twists and turns have a similar function.
