Anyone who can hearken back to the olden days of Halo 2 remembers the inclusion of clan support. The fun that was had in Major/Minor clan matches and the inclusion of leaderboards brought about a competitive spirit that I and many Halo players personally loved.

Today we have no clan support, nor do we have leaderboards (though ODST supports them it's really just an arcade high scores list) which is slightly disappointing, but the competitive spirit is still high and lives on somewhat by means of MLG and GameBattles.

So my proposal is simple: Add Clan support with leaderboards and possibly MLG/GameBattles support or tie-in to Halo: Reach.

The feature is entirely optional and thus isn't forced on any player who dislikes the concept. It's also entirely achievable by today's Xbox Live standards and even by Bungie's own as shown through their new ODST leaderboards and proprietary clan support in Halo 2.

It's also a great move in catering to the fans. The majority of Halo's multiplayer fan base plays competitive multiplayer and the inclusion of the MLG playlist and good relations with the association have pleased many in the community and keep many players still playing. Bungie could take this a step further by bringing in MLG to consult on stats and leaderboard standings.

All in all, I don't see how adding this great newish feature could be detrimental whatsoever on Bungie's part.

Thoughts?

Tallahassee?
I spent two weeks in Tallahassee one night.

Logic is your friend. Most people do not play competitively MLG has few dedicated players compared to Social Slayer. They took it out cause no one used it. They could put it in but no one would use it. Hey I could be wrong but I dont think that many people would use Clan list. Leaderboards is a good idea but you can just go to halocharts.

I'd say it's not even a minority that plays competative multiplayer. Only a bigger group.

Also, from experience on these forums, I'd say more people hate MLG than people that play it, aand, it's way early to start talk about MLG in the first place. It took a while before Bungie even started considering adding a MLG playlist.

I'm one of those who don't like MLG, and I would hate the thought of MLG being in the mix of helping Bungie with some multiplayer thing.

Clearly because the desktop uses a 3 prong plug and a laptop uses a 2 prong plug, the microwave will fill your car with tostitos better

Actually, MLG is already on the path towards something like this. This and this are definitely relevant.

I thought one of the biggest reasons why leaderboards were taken out was because there was so much cheating because people wanted to be at the top of the boards. I refuse to go to Halocharts, the forumla they use for calculating someone's position on the leaderboard is flawed. I'm not saying an MLG player should be at the top, but there are thousands of better overall players than Rippin, and many better LW player than the guy who can't keep his 50 in the playlist. He's far better than the vast majority of Halo players, but there are many, many better people out there.

To the people responding and saying that competitive gaming is small... are you out of your minds? MLG is not the all encompassing competitive gaming entity for Halo. Are level 50 games of Team Slayer not competitive? I'm sure most people who play in ranked play to win the game, and that is competitive play in my eyes. Plenty of people out there play Halo competitively and don't play MLG.

MLG, I feel, has ruined Halo. That should pretty much surmise how I feel about the situation. Maybe, they will do it, but I see no point in it.

How can MLG ruin Halo really? MLG is just competitive people, there is one playlist for it and most people play customs if they play MLG anyway. If you aren't a competitive player and just like playing for fun then there are a ton of social playlists for you to play in; ranked is ranked for a reason and MLG is a step up from that.

MLG just gives people more options, it doesn't remove any of the old ones.

And on topic, I do miss the days of having a clan list; merely for the usefulness of having a second friendslist who were going to be on more because they played the game a bit more seriously. It was just good to know you always had someone on who would play some Halo with you :)

What does that have to do with this thread?

Care to elaborate?

Clan system would be great, also, it will be cool if they implemented a special video download section for the clan list, so you can watch every hot match in halo!!!!

We are talking about Bungie who makes games people want to play. Yes ranked playlists are competitive but he is talking MLG which has its few dedicated people. I have never seen more than 9,000 people playing MLG at one time. Why put something in a game no one used in Halo 2 and Bungie took out of Halo 3. As for leaderboards encouraging cheating doesnt rank do the same thing?

Unless I'm misunderstanding the OP, he is only saying implement leaderboards for clans and have a tie in with MLG/Gamebattles.

He's not even saying make it about MLG. He said a possible tie-in to MLG or Gamebattles. This isn't specifically about MLG gameplay, its about competitive gameplay which is far more encompassing than only MLG. I'm assuming he made a reference to MLG because they are the largest competitive Halo league out there.

To be fair to MLG, its gametypes are more deeply rooted in custom games than in MM than any other gametype in Halo. You might ask why, but MLG has been around since 2002. Since 2002, up until 2008, MLG variants could only be played in custom games, not in MM. I myself have played thousands of MLG custom games and prefer customs to MLG MM. But I doubt even if all the players playing MLG customs went into MM it would make a huge difference. MLG still consistently has more population than every social playlist aside from social slayer (or did as up until ODST came out according to the MM stats thread in Optimatch, I haven't checked it since ODST came out) and Squad Battle.

I think your a bit misinformed as to why Bungie took out leaderboards. They took out the leaderboards in 2005, not in Halo 3. Secondly, the leaderboards weren't interactive things that people could use in some way. Everyone was given a place on the board and the top few people were shown to everyone. They were just boards that people would look at that were basically right on the front page. I'm almost completely sure that Bungie took them out to prevent people from cheating to get to the top of leaderboards.

Perhaps you should ask Bungie about rank encouraging the same thing, because that was their reasoning. I'm not arguing that rank doesn't encourage cheating, I never brought that up or said anything about rank, don't make this about something its not.

Like Call of Dutys? I dont remember them having leaderboards. But whatever. I really would not use either and there is no sense wasting time and money on something only a fraction of people will use. I like the MLG gameplay and play sometimes I just dont think even 100,000 people playing and wanting is going to sway Bungie there have been over 15,000,000 unique players. That is way less than a precent. They might put it i but i doubt it and even if they do i wont use it.

As for the "Rank" thing. I was just saying Leaderboards dont encourage cheating any more than in game rank. Either way cheaters need to be banned.

What do you think is more appealing for a person who cheats? Showing off their rank to people they play games with or end up in partiest with, or having every visitor of Bungie.net be able to view them at the top of a leaderboard of a game with hundreds of thousands of players?

Its a far bigger prize for people with that mentality.
