Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

If you're talking about your hits not registering, you have to "lead" your shots. You can thank Microsoft for that problem.

Yeah. That's right. I don't have a 50 in H3. I never got Onyx in Reach. If a game sucks too much, I won't even bother trying for such trivial "accolades". Besides, I've done way more things that take far more skill and talent than anything that can be done in a video game.

No, Microsoft. Gearbox's beta code was fine. Then Microsoft decided to be pricks and try to keep gaming in the past by forcing Gearbox to implement 56k support.

FPS on a 56k had be done plenty of times without problems before Halo, so I fail to see why Microsoft's 56k mandate is responsible.

No doubt their beta code was fine, but probably only because they could chuck enough bandwidth at the problem that it did a good job of masking it.

But maybe chucking that much bandwidth is what the game needed, considering Halo was built for LAN play. I think the only way they could have added the 56k support without the lag we see now is if they had rewritten all the netcode for the game, rather than porting it and tweaking it for their needs.

I'm sure they did claim that the netcode was written from scratch.

I could sworn I read that it wasn't.

Anyone have a link to that big post that Gearbox dude had about why Halo PC had its problems and whatnot? I think it was clarified in there.

As someone who started online gaming using a 56k modem to play Halo I personally am very glad for their decision and feel it was the right one. Still am, because it's still an awesome game.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

It's not the 56k support per se that is the problem. It is the netcode's reluctance to disconnect anyone who is dropping a lot of packets. You can get the same problems on various connection speeds. Wireless players know how bad it can be, and the rest of us playing with wireless players knows how bad it can be too. When you combine the problem of massive packet drops plus the hit detection netcode as compensation you end up with terrible outcomes, such as people moving down the maps at 125% speed, or hogs disappearing over and over again. The higher the ping, generally the more guessing the game becomes. Not only is it unfair for people who have decent connections, but it is incredibly unfair to the person with the bad connection. The hit detection absolutely hammers this person. Once you get the red reticle on a big time lagger (which inofitself is not always easy) all you have to do is lead your shots and you will get hits on every shot no matter where they actually went. And yes this is the legacy of Microsoft Game Studios, not Gearbox or Bungie.

Mmm, again, it seems unfair to blame Microsoft for the net code problem when it was done by Gearbox. As far as I see it, the blame lies squarely on their shoulders despite their attempts to shift the blame.

Fact of the matter is they launched the game without even having a proper player scores tables (it still doesn't have a proper PCR or ping times), a dedicated server, proper team support and a whole load of other features that are considered standard. We're meant to believe it wasn't them that were incompetent?

They did a nice job of trying to pin everything on Microsoft mind. What about the one CD mandate that prevented them for getting everything they wanted on? It was said by Sawnose that they did infact fit everything they wanted on the disc. I suppose you could take that in more than one way though.

network tweaks
it won't solve the problem of "leading".
