I've finished all of the games, and played them all a LOT, except ODST since it's new, but I've still finished it on Legendary/most achievements.
My opinion is that the free-roaming is a joke. I was really hyped for the concept, but it turned out to just be an annoying way of having to get from level to level - the levels were just as linear, if not more so than the previous games.
Firefight is a great concept, again, like the free roaming, but poorly executed. Once all the achievements are done, you've racked up a fair few hours of firefight, and I'll admit it was quite fun doing it, anything is fun with friends.
But now doing firefight is just optional, there's nothing to gain. And frankly, my friends and I simply won't waste 2-4 hours on firefight (a whole evening), on one gametype, on one map when we could be playing a whole variety of gametypes on multiplayer Halo 3, or if we wanted to fight AI, doing campaign missions on co-op instead.
Considering how the campaign is more or less the same concept as Halo 3s on Legendary (peek, noob combo, headshot, duck and wait for regeneration) and how it is so short, compared to ANY of the previous Halo games. (On Legendary Halo 2 being the longest, then 3, CE, then ODST) I just simply don't have a reason to ever play it again.
If I want to fight AI I'd have more of a challenge and more fun being the MC on Halo CE, or with friends on Halo 3, and if I want multiplayer, I'm going to go to Halo2/3 again.
I agree, ODST was fun on the first playthrough, but frankly, I think that's all of the playthroughs the game merits (this coming from a guy who's done AotCR/Silent Cartographer 50+ times each).
It has no classic replayable levels like every other game managed to deliver (AotCR, Outskirts/Delta Halo/Crow's Nest), and the campaign is really all it's offering. Poor performance indeed, Bungie.
