Nice thread. I actually read The Divine Comedy and was sorta thinking the same thing.

I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.

Outstanding find. *Save

I might have missed it, but there is another reference someone found.

On the level/map Windward, a backwards voice can be heard, which when reversed, recites a verse from 'the hollow men' by T.S Elliot.
I'm not exactly sure how, but this poem has strong links to Dante, etc.

I don't know about the Hollow Men reference, usually Bungie throws that into games, as in Halo 3 trailer, "This is the way the world ends"

Still the references to Dante in the game are quite good.

Time is running out! Get her pregnant before he does! It is the only way you can truly call her yours.

"Don't you know? Spartans never die."

Does anyone remember the magazine ads for ODST? They said, "... When the Covenent see our judgement rain down upon them, they will know fear." Mabye not the exact quote, but that's pretty close, of course, only partial. Judement basically the core of what the Comedy tells, and the ad may have been a clue, which (for me ar least) was obscured in hype and the simple way Bungie makes me actually enjoy advertisement. In hindsite, it seems pretty obvious.

Looking over this thread makes it pretty obvious that the vast, sometimes blatant allegories to the Divine Comedy are no mistake. I felt there was something going on that was deeper than just surviving the city. This is definately one of the deeper games that I've played.

Okay, well thanks for putting up with my various long entries and not being too critical. And of course, thanks to Danves for revealing that ODST is much more than just a game. I'm looking foreward to what else the community comes up with.

Finally, before I forget, does anyone feel that we may just be digging up a Halo: Reach Arg? After all, Fourth Wall was pretty heavily involved.

I actually didn't make the connection until earlier today when I was playing and I looked at my audiologs and noticed there were 9 circles.

Without me, it's just "Aweso".

Great find.

I actually totally did catch the 9th level references, because i had to read the divine comedy for school, and the fact that as the superintendent, "Vergil/Virgil" was your guide through the hell of new mombasa wasn't lost on me either.

So... I played dante's inferno before I played dante's inferno?

  • 10.02.2009 6:52 PM PDT

The demond is dead!!!!! Oh no!! He respawned!! Damn it!! We should have killed the Arbiter as well!!!!!!!

Good Job OP.

This is similar to the forum for Halo 3 where one guy thought that sandtrap had a massive easter egg. Dont know if that was proven, if any 1 knows can they let me know? Thx. Also, it would make sense that there are 9 instead of seven, considering that bungie's fave number is 7.

You would've been worthy back in the age of Recon...

I'm speechless that I didn't find this myself..........

Kudos to the OP and Bungie, The Comedy is one of my most favorite reads.
