You're like, the bee's knees: you have helped me out a LOT in the past and you're a genuinely nice guy, and you deserve all the best for the good you've done me and surely done others
Count Peter, you're one of the only people I respect on here. Not that that means much on a forum, but still.

I was getting ready to say "Maybe you are looking waaay to into it"

But this actually does make a hell of alot of sense

That makes the story all the more epic =D

Sort of random, but isn't there a game directly based on Dante's Inferno coming out? I think I remember seeing one shown at e3.

Anyway, as everyone has said, amazing work TC. I can't wait to read/see how the final few audio logs tie in.

If it helps, http://achievementhunter.com/games/halo3odst/guide/

From what I've seen and read of the actual Dante's Inferno game so far, it seems to be somewhat of a God of War-esque game. And from the brief description of it, I think that Bungie's version, which was cleverly concealed, will be more true to the story than the actual video game riding on the poem of the same name.

danves, any way you could place a link to my big post in the first post of the thread?

Not the first post due to space, but it is on the first page. I should have reserved a post or two in advance.

Also, to any mods who may be looking. How does one get a thread stickied? I'd be interested to see how far we can take this thing.

I'd like to add something if you don't mind:

Posted by: Danves
The 9th circle of Hell, in the Inferno, is actually cold. Ice cold. The punishment here is for that of Treason. The higher the crime, the more encased in ice you shall be. The very center of the 9th circle is where Satan himself resides, encased in ice up to his waist, beating his wings, whose gusts of air cause the 9th circle to be encased in ice. Satan himself has three faces, and each is chewing on the three (at the time) greatest betrayers. Their punishment for betraying their lords and benefactors is to be eternally gnawed on by Satan himself.

Don't forget that you can find a Flamethrower (Symbolism of Satan himself?) in the frozen part of the 9th level. This is like the first thing that came to my mind.

Hmm, It's been a while I've read it, but I don't think that Satan is said to use or be associated with fire. Perhaps the flamethrower could stand for something else?

And even though I had not gotten all of the audio logs, I looked up stuff on Halopedia earlier today. Apparently Kinsler had turned on an argon cooling system of some sort, suffocating and freezing personnel on the 9th level of Vergil's database (as some had mentioned previously in the thread). This is quite obviously betrayal on a grand scale, the sin of the 9th circle of hell. And later, Kinsler is killed by being torn apart by a mob. This also goes back to the greatest betrayers in the Inferno being eternally chewed on, and torn apart, by Satan himself.

I'll double check this all when I get the last logs.

Here's the article, by the way.

Glory to Jesus Christ

I would consider this a huge stretch were it not for the ninth level being frozen like Cocytus and the SI being called Vergil. Awesome job.

idk if anybody else pointed this out already but, when i was playing, my brother also noticed that this was based on the poem. and he noticed a part towards the end when Romeo says "We went to hell for that" and apparently thats a quote from the poem. Im not sure but i thot id add my little tid bit.

Some cool philosophies from The World Ends With You (DS)

The World Ends with You........ Give up on yourself, and you give up on the world.

Only by allowing strangers in can we find new ways to be ourselves.
The World Ends with You is one of the best games on DS, buy it if you have a DS.

Bungie bungie bungie...... you had to have planned it this way. That's an amazing find dude. Friggin awesome. Thread saved. all that stuff. Now what will those so hardcore-were-almost-anitchristian cults will say for game reviews. This is an epic thread.

Do we know of any refrences from Dante's Inferno relating to the members of the squad? Like thier missions etc? Or are the refrences mainly directed in and around the storyline?

I played a poem? I can live with that...its nice to see someone that is even smarter than what my inner ego voice tells me I am!

I found it pretty interesting.
Nice find.
Probably why I was drawn in, though I did find the story a little under-drawn.

I've been trying to think of how they relate, if they even do, but I don't wanna start twisting information around to make it fit. As of yet, it seems like the Rookie's story is the only one that references the Inferno.

Cool. Damn Bungie is clever = )
No they are lazy for not making there own story

If you play through without realizing this, it is their own story! The fact that they linked a very unique story inside the Halo universe to Inferno like this, is pretty amazing. (sadly, I've never read it)

I don't believe in magic, but I DO believe in bones.

Another thing I noticed last night as well, is that there are technically 9 missions, or sections. I believe that the first mission, Prepare to Drop, could be included in with the Mombasa Streets "missions," bringing the total down to 9. They are all basically the same thing, with the Rookie wandering the streets looking for clues. Perhaps the missions DO reference the circles of Hell. It may all be a conveniet coincidence, with the number of missions, but if we can find out whether or not said missions include elements of the circles of Hell, we might be able to take this thing further.

I don't really have high hopes for all of the missions referencing the Inferno in some way. The Rookie is Dante, and all missions associated with him immediately reference the Inferno in some way, so it would make sense for the Inferno to be the Rookie's 'Hell on Earth' in new Mombasa, and only that.

I doubt there are any direct references. But the ones you uncovered in your OP and the ones found in the audio logs are big enough!

Also, it would mean they limited the number of missions to the 9 for a pretty silly reason (dev time limits and "it's the story we wrote" are legit reasons, "there are 9 circles of hell" is not).

May the Forge be with you.

True or not, Joseph Staten and his fellow Bungie writers are absolutely brilliant.
