Some of you may think I'm a bit odd to say that. But hear me out...

Halo: Combat Evolved - an amazing game. What made it good? Great gameplay, and a very gritty style. There was a large element of horror, and fear-creating scenarios, such as the first encounter with the Flood. Enemies were also dark, and very intimidating. Even Grunts, because they weren't too colourful.

Halo 2 - a great game, but it didn't quite live up to Halo: CE. The Campaign was also dark and gritty, with several scary places. Enemies were still dark and intimidating, but Grunts became less of an enemy, and more of targets. The introduction of Brutes made the game all the more "evil".

Halo 3 - another great game, but it was far too colourful. Grunts were rainbow-coloured enemies, with too much of a laughable side to them. Brutes received armour, and turned into toned-down Elites. With the addition of the new art for Halo 3, and a very bright Campaign (even "Cortana", a level full of the darkest enemy of all, was bright in colour).

This gradual change, making Halo into more of a "kids game", has made me a little upset. With the introduction of Halo 3: ODST, the hope for a darker, grittier game was raised. Of course, it turned out darker than Halo 3 (literally, and visually). I preferred it to Halo 3, in all honesty.

Now, what would I love Reach to be like? Remember the Halo Wars cutscenes? That's precisely it. A dark, gritty game, with a lot of evil-looking Covenant to fend off, rather than pitiful Grunts which cry when they see confetti.

Thoughts?

I miss playing Halo with my friends.

I see what you're saying, but I thought that the lighting and colouring was the best ever. It made the game so beautiful. I like the beauty of this game over the other Halo's.

Plekpedia - The most epic site in the history of ever.

I love the color. I hate it when games like Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Killzone have great graphics, but just flat out bland and ugly enviorments (spell?). Color is one of the things I love most about Halo.

I know what you mean. Halo 3 was a great-looking game, but to me, it was too bright, too colourful. It just seemed like a lightened-up version of Halo.

There were a lot of greens, and blues, and it just made it feel... "wrong". ODST was great. There were a lot of dark colours, and it made me feel different about the way it was played.

I don't know if that makes sense to anyone.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Halo 3's main issue with campaign was that it catered to the casual player who didn't care about the story and never played Halo 1 and 2. The Arbiter being reduced to a sidekick was proof enough of that.

Halo: Reach needs to cater to the hardcore fans with the campaign mode like ODST did, except on a grander scale.

And I thought I was the only one who thought this...

I completely agree. Halo 1 also had a sense of mystery and it was more or less about unraveling the unknown. Halo 3 gave you too much info. I like my games more open to interpretation, like a good song or movie. For example in Half-Life 2 they don't tell you anything about the story per say. There are clues but for the most part the game lets you figure out how the Combine came to be. I like that and Halo 1 accomplished that. I only hope Reach can do the same.

Make us Halo 1 fanboys proud Bungie!

There were a couple levels, like "Floodgate", "Halo", and "The Storm", that weren't too bright. I think the game was made is perfect.

I'm sure Bungie must be well aware of what other developers are doing. All I care about really is that Bungie really capture the right atmosphere whilst still keeping it Halo. Whats lacked throughout the halo series is the feel that you are in a war.

Check out video footage of Bad Company 2 - http://www.gamersyde.com/stream_battlefield_bad_company_2_mom ents_episode_1-13128_en.html

No gore but intensity level is through the roof.

Also I thought it was already confirmed that Reach will mainly focus on multiplayer, it's meant to replace Halo 3.

Sadly, I think it will be. Notice how we are getting a Beta? Same thing with H3 and we got a half-assed campaign. I'm going to guess they will cater to the multiplayer side again amd leave the campaign fans out to dry.

I too would love it if Bungie did this again. The problem is (and you probably already know this) is that the majority of the gaming industry is casual players (Wii sales), and getting casual players on board with Halo helps give the developers more money to spend on making an even better game.

I agree that the color should be tuned down to match the gritty campaign that won the hearts of millions a few years ago. But it should be Halo. Not COD or Gears where the envirements are too down to Earth to give off the futuristic feel that is unmatched with any other game. It must remain Halo but a scrary, nailbiting campaign would keep people interested for a while.

Yes this annoyes me as well, what Bungie needs to do, is take that beautiful color and art from Halo 3 and add gore and grit to it , that is what i have been dying to see ever since it came out. Halo, one of the highest rated, best games out there, thats rated M, does not have gore, it takes away from that feeling of being under attack by a nearly unstoppable force that can and will not hesitate to destroy all humanity. You know what im saying, I think thats one of Bungie's biggest mistake,...hopefully Reach will be like that, but not gears of war gore, realistic gore, more blood, plasma burns, swords that actually slice threw body parts, and the occasional head flying into your face, u know?

From what i have seen in the Reach teaser trailer i believe that this game is going to be more dark and gritty like the halo wars cutscenes because of the look on the planet and the colour of the destroyed frigate.

I don't really agree. Because it actually had color, its a "kids game"?

It was definitely better than going with gunmetal gray and dusty brown *Cough*Gearsofwar*cough*

Golf Wang. Brony.

I thought Halo 3 was too colorful and open; it reminded me of a toy box.

Yet some of the environments in the game were just freaking awesome, my mind was blown. I bet these particular aspects are giving Bungie one hell of time. They just seem to miss their mark sometimes, you know?

i doubt it will be much different than halo combat evolved seeing how the marines from halo ce and the marines in halo wars looks (in the cutscenes)

  • 09.30.2009 3:30 PM PDT

I think this game will be a backwards version game of Halo 1 since it's set before the 1st game. I think in gameplay terms, the health system will be different since the Spartans use Mark 4 armor. I think it will be a hybrid of Halo 1 and Halo 3: ODST's health systems. The weapons in the game will be more than Halo 1, but less than the other games. We'll probably see some weapons from the books not in Halo 1. Multiplayer and Firefight will be like Halo 3 and ODST's though but with some improvements, whatever Bungie decides to put into Halo: Reach. Hopefully we'll see some new maps and remakes of maps we haven't seen yet. Also hoping for Blood Gulch V4.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

Halo CE and ODST were great. If they just revert back to CE style altogether I will be COMPLETELY pleased.

  • 09.30.2009 3:45 PM PDT

I agree.

Another thing thats been rubbing me the wrong way since Halo 2 has been the comedy and the dialogue. Halo 1 had elements of humor, but it was dark humor - humor in the face of impossible odds. In Halo 2 and Halo 3, its slapstick humor that feels entirely too forced and awkward. Its like a collection of bad one-liners that make anyone with an IQ above room temperature roll their eyes. Even in ODST we have this sappy love story that plays out like a Soap Opera; it detracts from the experience.
