Keep in mind that the Medal Chest is different for Multiplayer and Campaign. For example, I believe there was no Wheelman, Bulltrue, or Highjacking medals in the Halo3 Campaign, and there is no Needler or Plasma Pistol medals in Multiplayer. Though, I am not 100% confident on all the medals that existed.
You are making this more than what it is. But, if you really believe that there is a Sword in the game or was considered for the game, then more power to you. But, I don't because it is obvious to me that Bungie just left the gif packages in the Website's (keyword: "Website's") design. The images you are finding are associated to the files within the website; not the game, like what you seem to think.
We have no illusions. We know we're working with the website code not the game code. We don't feel like doing what certain people did with Hayabusa. Even so, knowing that the sword medals/animations/weapon were in the game would put us in the exact same position as we are right now - we still don't know whether we can find a sword loaded into the map and pick it up for use.
Perhaps you should understand the timeline of events that developed into this 3-part theory?
1) I (among many others) find the 5 empty medal boxes in the weapon spree category to be suspicious.
2) I look into the web code to find out what I can. We figure out that the black medal boxes are each added onto the gray background which shows through below the style medals, meaning Bungie intentionally added the empty ones.
3) My friend and I find a sword spree that might be redundant from H3, but it is re-rendered into higher resolution. Other H3 medals do NOT exist in the ODST medal database so we are lead to believe they are there purposefully.
4) Seeing the sword spree, we set out in NM at night simply to explore hoping something will lead to a hidden sword.
5) While exploring the Y symbols attract our attention much more than when we player through the game. We gravitate to the 3 "stonehenge" areas and assume there is a secret about them.
The sword may be completely separate from the puzzle we believe to exist. They seem correlated in this thread because we found both suspicions at the same time.
We have no illusions.
