Two days ago I started playing Halo in "Fixed Function Mode". This takes out all the fancy graphical things. I like this a ton better because it's easier to see and you aren't distracted by shadows, sparkles, or anything else. The ground is basically a bunch of repetive textures (like tiles). And of course, the main reason I did it is because my grapchics card sucks and I get like 5 FPS if not on Fixed Function, LOL. ATI Radeon X300, PCI bus... =/

Also, does anyone know why I get 70+ FPS on Sidewinder and most levels but only 20-30 FPS on Timberland? I think it's just that my graphics card has trouble doing nature-like things. Not sure why, but it was like that in another game I played before. hmm.

hmmm I need to try that, sounds crazy... what do you type into the target line again?

However, I'm also stuck to the viewing of a mere 30 fps, yes I dare not venture into the dark, scary world that is vsync and no-vsync.

have you considered overclocking? Also, get catalyst 5.6 if your card supports it, which i think your's does.

I have CATALYST 5.6 and I would probably overclock if I knew how.

yes, defragmenting does help if you haven't done it in a while. The game and maps load slightly faster too.

i think timberland has more complex textures and lighting than sidewinder. All those trees compared to a few rocks on ice make a difference too.

Timberland is a densely-populated map. The geometry is all confined to a very small space, and your pc is usually rendering the entire map, whereas on Sidewinder you will render about half or less - and that has fewer sprites as well.

Why not buy another graphics card then? You can just get a cheap one that at least has shaders 1.1.

i don't use a pixel-shader parameter, because i don't want to have to quit to get quality during campaign. Everyone talks about the 1.1 shader, but not the 1.4 shader. the 1.4 shader doesn't make plasma weapons look crappy like 1.1 does. In fact, i don't notice a quality difference at all. Before you say that my card probably support only the 1.4 pixel shader, i think a radeon x300se supports the 2.0 shader.
