From posts I've both read and made I've come up with this awesome idea for gameplay in Reach.
The basic premise of it is based on what made Halo: CE revolutionary. Basically, MC was a super-soldier, which allowed him to take on large groups of enemies as a single person. That meant smacking kills, recharging shields, wielding huge weapons, and so forth.
So, what makes Reach new story-wise is that there are multiple Spartans. So if one can take on a whole group of enemies, many spartans can take on a whole army.
But how would this translate to gameplay?
Easy. There's an AI or 'battle computer' helper for the spartans. It operates whether you play co-op or have bot teammates. The way it works is by dynamically assigning target enemies to each spartan. So a compass directs you to an area, VISR-like highlights tell you who to kill, even specifying a specific enemy.
But let's say you don't succeed in doing what it tells you, or you want to play the game your way or second-guess your commands: great! It will adjust to your actions, first by assigning you new targets, but even if you never pay attention to that your teammates will. So no matter what you do, this computer thing coordinates the actions of every team member.
If you're a noob, just do what you're told and you'll have a lot of success. Or, if you're good, you'll be able to know what to do beforehand and start to get a sense of how the AI will direct your teammates.
Like "Okay, I see some sniper targets, but if I focus on these Elites here, I know that my sniper will take them out" sort of thing.
The AI can get all snarky if you suck.
This would require massive battles, that are very open-ended.
Which is why this game would be a revolution. If Halo: CE mean huge open ended battles, Reach will mean hugenormous way open-ended battles.
The computer/AI system will make it easy for players of all skill levels to play in this situation and still have fun and feel like their teammates really are Spartans without the battles being cake.
Please respond if you like this idea so this can be a big topic and Bungie will add this to Reach!
