The old crapness was... Well it was broken, crappy, really small, and barely worked. But I loved it so. The main difference between the Old Crapness and the now was the sense of community. Back before the site change and for the first few months of the new site, it was a very small and tight-knit community with about 75-125 regular posting members. Everyone knew everyone, and it was great. Then, I guess at the start of summer, things started changing. More and more people joined. People who came did so not to discuss and give back to the community, but people who came to take. They wanted information, and they wanted it NOW. Then came ILB, and the Bungie community was changed forever. More and more and more people like the ones described above poured into the site, people who came to -blam!- the forums for the information they wanted.
So what was the difference between the Old Crapness and the New Hotness?
Simply put, it was the people. The people on the Old Crapness and for the first few months of the new site cared enough about the community to write well-thought out posts, answer new member's questions, and give back to the community. Were the people on it any smarter than the people now? Hell no. I mean, just the other day I was browsing the nether regions of the underground and uncovered a post by the Rip Saw titled "the bungie monkey" asking "What is that monkey in my avatar". But you see, the beauty of the whole thing was, people answered his question politely and thoughtfully, with some lighthearted joking going on as well.
See, the site really doesn't matter, it was the sense of community conveyed. It was partially created by the small size of the group, something that cannot now be reclaimed. The other part was that people were a community, which is more than can be said for most of the forums now.
Not to dis' Halo 2, but why do you think all of that happened at the start of summer? Well it was when all the advertising began pretty much.. I joined right after the old hottness, so I never really got to see it and how it was different.. but that doesn't really matter because like you said, its the community that mattered.
