Subject: Machinima Mode: Theater Mode of the Future.

Um... I like Halo? I don't really know what to say. I'm a student at the moment, I hope to become a criminal profiler, and I enjoy pretty much everything as long as it's good.

Please, read the whole thing before you reply or would like to add something. Onward then.

One of the best additions to the Halo series was theater mode. It was a Machinimators paradise. It was however somewhat limites.

Currently the only console game I can think of that has a better "Machinima Mode" is Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Currently the features in it (As far as I know) are: A green screen, a mode that allows you to talk into your mic, and your character will try to lip sync, and custom character animations.

In Halo I would like it to include all of the above and more (Not really sure what the more is but well everything could always be improved.)

Anyways I would like to hear from you, the community, what this "More" could be. I apologize for not being more creative but well this was just a spur of the moment thought. As you add better and better ideas to this post I will add them to the original post in order for others to see it and give feedback on it. Also if you could find any example of what these modes would look like and what the menus might be, please send them my way.

UPDATE #1: Something that would be a cool idea and that some people were expecting from Halo 3 was the ability to cut and put together various film clips, which would look something like this . Also another idea that would facilitate machinima making and pretty much make it so that you wouldn't have to spenda single dime other than buying the game would be the ability to record your voice while you were playing and thereby negating the need for another microphone. I know I'm missing another major component of the Machinima making process but hopefully it will come to me later.
Another idea, this one sumbitted by Zak Jaskowski was the ability to take off your helmet. I would like to further build on that idea by saying that it would be neat if you could take a picture of yourself with your vision camera and have the SPARTAN under the helmet modeled after you. This would be similar to the system used in Rainbow Six Vegas. This could also be used in the implementation of my previous idea, the one about lip-sync. Keep the ideas coming and hopefully Bungie will put some of them into the final build of the game.

UPDATE #2: Something that would be fantastic as far as atmosphere is concerned would be the ability to add weather effect and lighting to maps. It would be great to make a really moody machinima that included an atmosphere similar to ODST's. Another thing to add to that would be something similar to Forge Filters that could be added in the editing process.

UPDATE #3: This will be a small adittion. An idea that would greatly facilitate action scenes or suspense stories would be adding a bunch of invisible cameras around the map. You would be able to flip through them and allow for a much smoother and cleaner recording quality.
Thanks to Jaron LP for the idea!

UPDATE #4: Earlier I mentioned that you should be able to make custom character animations. This is a great idea but it has another facet of it in order for it to work properly. What I'm talking about are timelines. What I mean by this is that you should be able to time exactly when the character peforms the action. Imagine if you had a brute go up to a marine throw it in the air and punch it in the chest. That would not be possible because well you couldn't control two characters at once. Having the timelines would be extremely helpful. Also it would allow for smoother animations and not so much "jerkiness."
Thanks to Awkard_Zombie and InsaneAlphaBeta for the suggestion!

UPDATE #5: There should be an option that would allow you to change the physic in the game. There should be 3 general settings to start with which could then be tweaked. These 3 settings would be Realistic, Normal, and Ludicrous. Realistic would be similar to what you saw in Grand Theft Auto IV. Normal would of course be normal, and Ludicrous would be a mode in which a grenade would pretty much cause a crate to fly halfway across Valhalla. These could then be tweaked further in order to allow for more realistic "auto-animations."

UPDATE #6: Natal integration could be a huge addition to this mode. You would be able to go into this mode and choose an option in which you would be able to use Natal on one character at a time. This would allow for very realistic and responsive character animations if Natal really is all it's touted out to be. I will admit this idea is fairly limited however the places in which it could be used would be greatly improved. Thanks to BeNzMoVeMeNt for the suggestion.

Subject: Anybody else want a Machinima Mode?

Personally, I think an actual "skilled" person in Halo 3 is someone who knows how to win with every weapon and combo in the game, not just a single weapon like the BR, Sniper, or even the AR. Of course, that excludes me, as I have yet to get a kill with dual plasma pistols. :D

A while ago, I had an idea for something called Studio Mode, where you could play as ANYTHING from Campaign. It didn't have any of the stuff you mentioned in your post, but it was intended to be a machinima-making mode.

To sum it up quickly, all players would be able to edit their custom options and appearances independently from one another, and at any time. That way, you could have a purple Drone with overshields and a sword, an invisible, unarmed Elite, and a regular Infection Form driving a Mongoose, all at the same time.

Did you actually make this or was it just an idea? If you did make it then props to you, if you didn't it seems like a great idea.

Actually that would be pretty cool. You could take a picture with your vision cam and then the game would make the character's face look like you. An even better thing about this idea is that it would further reinforce the whole "you are the chief" aspect Bungie has been pushing on us.

Please, don't flame people about their spelling of grammar. If he can get his point across in a somewhat legible manner then I believe his post was a success. Also instead of poking fun of his spelling you should probably focus more on the idea than the delivery.

Playing games is my hobby.
Winning is my passion.

That would be nice if all the following Halos had that feature for everyone like making machinimas from Halo

I wouldnt mind it, but you would probably need Bungie pro to download it or with a capture card

so. if your going to put in all the time and effert make a machinima what a few bukes fore a captur card.

Well, a capture card can be slightly tricky, especially the internal ones. It would allow alot more people to create machinima. This would also cause a greater amount of -blam!- machinima but it would also allow for a greater number of people with good ideas to put them out there.

As for the Bungie pro thing, I guess it should come with a couple of extra features but not too many. As for your capture card idea, this feature would pretty much make them a non-necessity

Something that might bea good additon would be for you to be able to lower your guns in custom online games. It was one of the biggest draebacks while making Machinima in HAlo 3. I don't know but I guess you kinda forgot that part.

The option to have guns or not would be good/ That would also kind of play into the whole custom chartacyer animations that the OP mentione.

Hm.. This is a good thread :D

I think we need more characters, that would rock awesome sauce

That is actually a pretty good idea. Having marines and all the other character from the game added to Machinima mode would be great. I'll add it to the main post later on, right now I need to get some sleep.

What a waste....

OR perhaps, it could be like Forge, where you could still play a game. So it's like mods w/o mods

That could work too. Also having a complete map editior would make making believeable environments all the easier. I guess some of the difficulty in making machinima is one of its draws but it could always help.

Yeh, but I think project natal would work better for that to get a 3-D picture of you're face.

I'm the cult of personality,
I call it like i see it, if i feel the need to be blunt and to the point, then i will, if i feel the need to be very detailed, i will, im here to stay and im here to do things my way, if you respect that or not is your choice, not mine,
and don't worry, while i don't agree with everyone's opinion, i do respect everyone's opinion.

i have an idea you can add when i would have great ideas for a machinima i would not have enuf people we need BOTS bots and you can tell them where to go who to kill what to do what to drive who to help and more

  • 10.04.2009 1:09 PM PDT

with the helmet you should be able to press a button and your guy does an animation to reach up and pull off his helmet

If project Natal is out by that time, I think it might be a great idea. Also to the person below you who said we should be able to tell bots what to do, I was kind of thinking about that. You could give the bots a certain set of commands about where to go, who to shoot, where to jump, and how high.
To the person below that I think that that could be a good animation and would be able to use it to create suspense or something of the sort.
