This is currently a work-in-progress, so this post is not finished. I will add to this, whenever I have time or whenever I feel like it.
No, I'm not suggesting a Gears of War style game with blood everywhere and steroid filled apes running around with chainsaws yelling "AAAAAARRRRRGGGHHHHHHHH YARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" and "NOW I'M REALLY PISSED ARRRGGGHHHHHHHH DOM!!!!!!!!"
What I'm suggesting is what the title says, a darker, grittier, more emotional atmosphere. We're talking about a planet that's going to be destroyed, mind as well be serious about it. I'll explain in sections about specific subjects.
Marines.
These guys need to be the tough guys that they're supposed to be. In terms of dialogue, they need to be serious, they're fighting for a planet that is doomed from the start. Now, does that mean they shouldn't crack jokes? No, but they shouldn't crack jokes every two seconds like in Halo 3. And when they do crack jokes, they need to be clever, not like the "In-your-face" style of Halo 3: "Hey, I almost had a triple kill!" "You ruined my achievements!!!!"
Also, they should be wearing their Halo 1 armor, because well, it actually looks like armor that a space marine would wear.
Covenant
Elites need to return, it is absolutely necessary. And they need to stand tall like in Halo 1, it makes them look more like an alien menace than the hunched dinosaurs in Halo 3. Ditch the translation software, have them speak in their native tongue, again it makes them seem more like an alien menace.
Grunts, well what can I say. They should remain as comic-reliefs, but build off their Halo 3 appearance. There should be multiple variants of grunts, not just in color though, in tank size and shape also. An example would be the "curl-back" grunt from Halo 1.
