Stick with the pistol and aim for the face. Practice throwing grenades because its always good to soften your enemy up first. Pick up the active camoflage as often as possible. And the best piece of advice I can give you is if you're in real close and you think you may die, throw a grenade and take your enemy with you.

The shotgun is your friend if you learn how to use it (i.e., it's not just for close-up killin').

Aim for the knees... According to the Sybex Halo Official Strategies & Secrets book, the programmers accidentally left in a flaw that allows players to one-shot kill anyone by shooting one of their knees (the left, I think--the book isn't here with me right now--try it twice, aiming for one, then the other, and I'm sure it'll be easy to figure out if I'm wrong or right).

no, the best thing you can do is practice and practice, use tactics and some comman sense, like dont try to take a tank on BG by yourself(unless you have a roocket lancher oor ghost), and never leave your base without the pistol

well, i'm definatly not the best halo player, but i can sure own noobs (scale on 1-5, a 3.5)

it's best to learn what the people you play do, then find ways to counter it. recently, i don't play spilt screen if i can't avoid it, since all my friend's screenlook. i always play LANs, so that usually helps, playing with alot of players. basically, play with better people and adapt. soon, you will become even better than them.

noob tactics

noobs almost always use a ghost/tank whenever it's available. in the ghost, they try going head on, so have plasma nades ready so you can stick them if they try to run you over. if they're in a tank, just snipe/pistol snipe them out.

noobs almost always use the AR to send as many bullets at you as possible. just stay out of range, and send pistol shots to their heads.

noobs almost always stand still when they're sniping. perfect target for headshots or melees in the back.

These are tactics that noobs tend to use, while elites all differ. that's what makes them so good: they're unpredictable

Team Slayer advice:
Your number of kills are just as important as how many times you die. Don't charge into a situation until you know what it's going to entail.
Stay with your team (unless it's rockets) so that you have twice as many guns on the unsuspecting enemy.
If the other team has all of the vehicles stay up high and pistol everyone out of their tanks and ghosts.
If your Kills/Deaths ratio is less than 1.0 then you might think about not rushing in unprepared.

In Blood Gulch and Hang'em High all you need is a pistol to wreak havoc.

PISTOLS:
if your opponent is a fair distance away from you and on the run lead him with your pistol. Shoot in front of him.
Always aim for the head for the three shot kill.
Never hold down the trigger for rapid re-fire. Pull it for each shot so your pistol is more accurate.
Stay in the shade if at all possible.
Strafe, weave, and move around when being shot at... don't run in straight lines.
Zoom in to better your aim.

Don't use the portals in Blood Gulch.

If you ever fire a sniper rifle, you better move your position your you'll shortly die.

In free-for-all your number of deaths aren't as important to pay attention to as in Team Slayer.

Stay in the shadows of Blood Gulch.

Learn from your mistakes. If you keep dieing in certain spots on the board then don't go there. If you always die when you hope into a tank then don't get in. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.

I'll tell some things on some of the levels,
Blood gluch,
Always have a sniper and shot gun to your side. (Or a pistol) Stick to the higher grounnd most of the time. Don't get into tanks. Use a goust or Warthog for trasnportsion. Have plenty of granades. Throw a granade to weacken the person in the tank. (It some times kills them

Pisoner,
Always have a plasma riffle and pistol. Don't let anyone have the active camo. Don't use the sniper. Stay to the lower ground a little bit.

Hang 'em high
Always stay up to the higher ground al the time. Use a pistol for sinping. Have a shot gun with too. Don't let any one get out of your sites. Run for a helth pack if your nearly dead.

Side Winder,
have a sniper and Shot gun. If any one has is in a tank hunt 'em down. Throw granades on the tank to weaken the person. use the portal to stay out of trouble. Never let people gang up on you.

Thats about all the things I can tell you those levels they should help.

I'll give you some sniping tips.
1) Never fire more than 2 shots at a target, this way it will limit their chances of seeing you shot trail.
2) Pick 2 or 3 good sniping spots and rotate between them after every kill or couple kills.
3) Set up a good crossfire. If you playing with a team have them attack someone forcing them to find cover with the enemies back to you so you can have an easy shot.
4) Poach. If you see a firefight breakout wait for one of the people to get wounded and then pick them off. This is a good way to keep you kills up while the other teams kills stay low.
5) If a target is jumping and runing randomly don't shoot at them it is a waste of ammo.
6) Have a friend snipe with you so you can keep pouring fire on the enemy if they choose to rush you.

That's pretty much it and I hoped I helped.
