I doubt it would be class based, because it would kill Custom Games.

How about we let bungie make the game and like all other bungie games it will be good no matter what spin they put on it?

It's not going to be a class game! Bungie made the characters in the picture with variety!

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I've been seaching his thread for evdence of a class based game, but all you have is a banner picture? I could easily say you play as the middle character the whole game and the other characters are merely your squadmates. Which of our opinions has more evidence (trick question)?

That's what Obama said. Look where it got us. (Not to a good place)

Please keep politics (and things you don't fully understand) out of this. It is against the rules for a reason.

If this ends up being a Team Fortress game, I'm personally blowing up Bungie Studios.

Team Fortress 2 is amazing, so...not that bad of a comparison really.

This is exactly what I was thinking when I first saw this picture. However...I dont think the MP will be class based.

I think the campaign will be ALOT like ODST, where you play as each character. Also play as Master Cheif in the early stages, hell IDK. I read the fall of reach, he was being trained during that book right? From when he was a kid until he became a Spartan. IDK, I just dont think the MP will be classed based.

OR another idea, which I would love is if bungie offered 2 MP. Hell, give us the classic Halo style with some tweaks, and if we want, we have a class based MP with matchmaking and what not.

I have played some fun ass class based games, Conker Live and Reloaded was fun as hell and Team Fortress is amazing, so, it would be all bad...I think the option of both is sick, and I think the campaign will be alot like ODST. IMO.

now he fights and loses
got all the bruises
will someone please step in?

Everyone here knows everything, don't they?
anyways yeah, the banner COULD be foreshadowing class based combat, but it might not be. On another note, why does it have to be one or the other. You notice how many playlists halo3 has? There is no reason that halo reach will have only a single multiplayer gametype... its just not halo's style.
Discussion is nice, but lets remember at this point its all speculation. I personally would be willing to try a class based halo (spawn with your choice of weapons, why not?) but I don't think they'll abandon the classic halo gameplay completely.

Why is everyone so against class based combat? seriously, it's a lot of fun, Star Wars Battlefront, Conker Live and Reloaded, The Battlefield Games and Team Fortress were all really good.

As for those people who say they want it to have Halo 3 style MP well a simple solution is to play Halo 3.

I mean, I think class based Mp would be awesome but until I see more evidence than the banner (which makes me also believe it may be class based BTW) i'll expect Halo 3 style gameplay.

hmmm if it is class based i dont think it would be bad but it aint the best idea because none of the halo games are class based and there probly wouldnt be MLG or if there is wont be that fun dont take skill to be the heavey weaponed guy all the time with the rocket launcher

Signatures are for squares.

Hey buddy, Do me a favor. List off a couple popular class based shooters.

Rainbow Six Vegas.
Call of Duty.
Team Fortress
Battle Field
etc...

Now name off a couple popular FPS's like Halo?
-Halo.

When I get bored of Halo (Rarely) I pop in CoD for a bit, and once I'm tired of classes I go back to Halo.

But what happens when the gaming market is filled with nothing but class based shooters? Halo is different, that's why it's successful. Some will say, "Halo is just like quake" But look at Halo, it's one of the last popular genres of it's kind. I don't want to be forced to play nothing but class based games.

If this becomes class based, I'll just play Call of Duty.

But it won't. Bungie isn't that dumb.

Agreed.

In fact the main reason I think Reach won't be a class based shooter is the business side of things. Why would they try to infringe on an already filled class based shooter niche of the nearly equally successful CoD series?

i sure hope they dont make it class based. i hope everyone starts the exact same (besides controller setting, sensitivity, ect.). like in previous halo's

I do not need a sig...you'll know it was me

I'm easy if it's clased based or not. But what I think it could be is the squad from the campaign. Of course that's just a guess, but also a possibility.

Well done, good sir, you have identified the five people in the banner are specialists in different areas. These people will most likely be who we will be playing as throughout the majority of the campaign. This banner has absolutely nothing to do with multiplayer.

Halo 3 has sold ALOT more copies than CoD and ANY other class-based game. I have said this time and time again, why would they choose to switch to the losing side? Halo 3 sold 8.1m copies in little over 3 months, and 2.5m on the first day. CoD4 sold little under a mere one million on the first day.

Quote from wikipedia:

The Xbox 360 version was the third best-selling video game of 2007 in the U.S. with 3.04 million units sold, behind Halo 3, which sold 4.82 million units, according to the NPD Group.

Halo has ALWAYS been about map control and gathering the power weapons. Not loadouts and classes. Halo takes more skill, teamwork and for that reason IMO it is a better overall game. Whereas CoD doesn't takes little teamwork and you can be killed in two bullets, which isn't too good when there's a P90 that shoots 10+ bullets a second and people just hold down the trigger and run through rooms.

Anywayyy, on topic,

Halo won't be class based.
Period.

The teaser image for reach has all the 5 different typical types of soldier that we see in games, and so strongly suggests a class based multiplayer system. The 5 classes we can see are as follows, from left to right...

Heavy Weapons
This is the tallest Spartan and he appears to be carrying some sort of turret or machine gun.

Scout
Everybody is saying that this is Kelly. If so that makes this character the fastest and most agile one, ideal for a scout class.

Soldier
In the middle is the Master Chief holding an assault rifle, this is the basic, all purpose soldier class.

Stealth
Most people agree that this character is Fred, who is famous for using the combat knife, this suggests a stealth/spy class much like Team Fortress 2's Spy

Sniper
This one is obvious, the character is holding a sniper rifle and most people say this is Linda who is known for sniping ability.

Also, why would Bungie give out a beta for a multiplayer they know works incredibly well, there must be a drastic change. Either with the use of Natal or the class system, or both

So thats my idea, tell me what you think in this thread.

Those classes aren't right. there can't be a Scout, Stealth, and Sniper class. they are all too similar, what would the scout do anyway?

Btw - polls on bungie.net mean absolutely nothing, so please don't use them to try and prove some kind of point.

def think it will be class based too but will still be able to be played the way we know and love.

  • 10.04.2009 11:27 AM PDT

Don't take me seriously. Ever. Except now. Now you can take me seriously on this statement. But other than that, don't. Just don't. Ever.

Rather than a team fortress game, I was thinking more of a MAG game on a slightly smaller scale. That's definitely what I'm hoping for.

They are all very different, play TF2 and you will see. A scout is very fast and can double jump, they carry a small shotgun so are only good at close range and have less health but in TF2 they can capture objectives at twice the speed of any other class.

A spy/stealth class can cloak themselves and disguise as an enemy player, then uses a knife to kill other players without being noticed, taking out key objectives to make the assault easier for his teammates.

A sniper simply picks off enemies at long range.

Explain how any of those are similar.

The reason I don't want a class based Halo game is because every other game out there (Battlefield 1942, CoD, Team Fortress, Bad Company e.t.c.) are class based shooters. It'd be just more of the same, and I could easily replace Halo: Reach with any other game on the market.

Keeping the classic formula (while not unique to the franchise) is unique to most other games. The only modern game (which doesn't include Quake, Marathon, Doom, etc) that I can think of that is closest to Halo is Unreal Tournament 3, and even then I believe Halo does a lot of things better.

if you have any questions about halo i am one of the few people on this site who will gladly help you. Even though this account has been active for only a year, my past accounts go all the way back to 2002.

if this ends up being a team fortress game, i am personally giving a hug to whomever thought of the idea.

Bacon

Its not gonna be classed based..So far as I know, bungie will stick to the same game type as soon as ppl will enjoy it and they earn money on it.

i hope this turns out to be true. anyone who has ever played team fortress 2 knows its on of the best multiplayer games of all time. seriously you could just give it better graphics and halo classes and it would be, hands down, the BEST multiplayer game ever. period.
