I don't know if engineers were in reach, I didn't read the book, so can someone say this could be canon?
Engineers in Reach:
First of all, from ODST we know they wouldn't be walking bombs. Elites respected the squishy things, and would protect them, not harm them.
Second: They could add the element of overshields to elites, and shields to jackals and grunts. This would make our foes much more powerful.
Third: You could place multiple together so they protect each other.
Fourth: They could serve as allies. How? Say you kill the squad after a firefight due to their shields making it harder to kill them. Now what? If the engineer is still alive, it will just float their. Walk up to it and hold RB, or B as in bumper jumper, and you pet it. This makes the engineer friendly to you giving you overshields. It also makes the engineer more important than you to enemies, meaning you have to protect it better. If you killed any other engineers in the squad it flies straight away after the squads dead, making it harder to get an engineer ally if there are multiple there. You could only have one ally at a time for obvious reasons, like you'd get invincibility.
Five: Intel. ONI thinks these guys have plenty of covenant intel, why not a mission where you have to retrieve a few and bring them back to a base for research?
Engineers were an interesting part of ODST. I'd like to see more of them in Reach.
