Subject: Sierra 259

Spartan III's never came about until long after Reach had fallen. This is indeed a spartan II, and you know he's not pinned down or anything because of the calmness and lack of importance. If he were being shot at it wouldn't be panic (they're spartans) but the sense of urgency would be hightened.

The SPARTAN III's were in operation in 2531, Reach was attacked in 2552.

On another note, I am actually reading First Strike right now, and it explicitly states that Malcolm was killed on impact.

Second of all; If you say that "Spartan 259" from the trailer is actually saying "Spartan II- 059" then you need to also explain "Spartan 320". If we follow the same logic you used earlier, then it would be "Spartan III- 020".

Well actually, upon hearing the trailer again, it sounds as though it's probably a marine stating that they are not going anywhere. If you can recall, there was a battalion holding the generators which got wiped out, the spartans landed mere klicks away from the generators. I believe also that Noble 1 is a reference to the dropship that the spartans were riding down, I believe this further because he quickly loses contact with it, and a few seconds later Sierra 259 talks about the spartans. He probably meant "We have backup, we're good to defend this position"

Sounds plausible, but I don't think the message 259 gave out was seconds after because we don't know the timeline of verbal messages in the trailer. Another thing is I don't think Noble 1 had anything to do with 259. I believe that Noble 1 failed to "be in that fight," so 259 is reassuring the CO that he has spartans on the ground and that they won't leave the battle like Noble 1.

Spartan III's have different call signs to Spartan II's, they have a letter followed by a series of numbers for example...
G099 - This is Ash's call sign, the leader of Team Saber in Gamma Company. Spartan 259 is not Malcolm... he is a previously unidentified persons who may not even be a spartan (Sierra is widely used call sign in the military and although likely referring to Spartans it could easily be another squadron or maybe even a pilot)
