I was going through all the useless and idiotic ideas in this forum, and I decided to come up with one of my own. What if, in Halo:Reach, the Brute equipment was replaced with Human tactical capabilities? Think about it, in the previous games the battles were small scale, and the Master Chief did not have use of many resources due to the isolated nature of the areas he was fighting in. Halo:Reach will most likely take place in the greatest UNSC military stronghold, thus giving him resources he has never had in any of the previous games. With the grandeur of the fights, it's safe to assume that mass effect weapons could be used, such as airstrikes and orbital bombardment. Maybe there could even be a level somewhat like the Spectre Gunship level in COD4(please don't bash me for bringing up COD). Granted, most of these ideas are borrowed from Halo Wars, but please bear with me.
Datapads:
Imagine being able to scavenge a fallen radioman for his equipment. Surely he would have means with which to connect with the UNSC battlenet? This connection would be able to allow you to call in a whole arsenal of UNSC badassary. Calling in Shortsword/Longsword Interceptors to take out a whole host of covenant armor, how awesome would that be? Calling in an orbital MAC cannon to take out half the continent(On a much smaller scale lol), getting a detailed reconnaissance map of the area, or perhaps a casualties list(This would give the game a much deeper emotional feel) would all be things accessible with the datapad/radio equipment. Now you all may be thinking "Airstrike, wouldn't that be overpowered?" Well, no, not in the sense of Halo:Reach I have. There were over 300 covenant ships in the system, this probably equals hundreds of thousands of troops planetside. This would give Bungie to create the massive scale battles we've all wanted but could not have because, in reality, how is a single spartan with his trusty assault rifle going to take out hundreds of wraiths?
Flares:
Flares would be used in a more physical sense, such as signaling to troops to your location. Bungie said that Reach would be a "Squad game but not a squad game" This enters the realm of probability that you would be able to call in reinforcements. Throw a yellow flare down, and a pelican comes and drops off a squad of marines. Green flare, you get a mongoose or a tank. Blue flare signals to your fellow spartans what your location is, and a green flare would signal for pickup, maybe at the end of the mission. These flares would give a new side to the game, where you control the battle more. In the previous games, everything was handed to you; "Oh look, I found a tank exactly when I need it! How convenient!" Well the flares would serve to add a little more depth, letting you choose when and where you want that tank, within the constraints provided by Bungie of course, you cant just have a pelican fly into a warehouse and drop off a tank for you. You could also choose when and where your mission ends, letting you explore a bit and not have to run to the end of the level all over again to finish it.
So what are your takes on this? The equipment could possibly be scripted, making you pick it up in the same area each time, but it would let you use it when you want, essentially creating your own story. I know the game is to far into the development cycle to consider these changes (as if Bungie would care about a single community post lol) but the grandeur that is Halo:Reach, just the absolute MASSIVE scale of what the book was, would easily allow these items to be in the realm of possibility.
