Subject: Please have graphical innovation like Halo 2

93% of statistics are lies. Formerly Xfire Grunt. Unfortunately, you can't change the WLID for your BNET account, so I had to create an alternate account. My other WLID was spam city (and it was my e-mail account too).

Lets go back to the Halo 2 days when Halo 2 came out. Halo 2 has better graphics then many Xbox 360 games (low budget titles now, non AAA titles before 2007).

Halo 3 is not similar. Halo 3 was not a graphical masterpiece. It was good, but not great. It wasn't ridiculously good. It wasn't the best of its time like Halo 2.

After seeing the Uncharted 2 and Modern Warfare 2 trailers, I am hoping for Bungie to beat the ridiculously good competition and make something like Halo2 graphically for its time. Something with graphics so good its better then games that come out in 2013 that are no top of the line. I mean Modern Warfare 2 is ridiculously good looking, and if Halo:Reach can beat that it would be great.

Everybody is going to say "graphics don't matter, gameplay does". All right, then why do people spend $2500 on HDTVs and $30 on Blu-Rays? Graphics make the experience better. Good graphics is not a replacement for gameplay. But too have one of the best experiences ever, graphics are important ESPECIALLY for SINGLE PLAYER. Single player graphics are 3* more important then multi-player graphics. Movies are more immersive, games as well when they look photo-realisitic.

So please Bungie, have graphical innovation, not graphical evolution like Halo 3. Halo 3 is an evolved version of Halo 2, which only looks good because Halo 2 was so damn good (as evidenced by the fact that Halo 3 looks very similar and got 9.5 graphical ratings on the Xbox 360, the next generation.

noticing the switch from halo 2 to Halo 3, I think that Bungie's got something up their sleave.

Because people are greedy, materialistic, and think Blu-Ray isn't already dead technology. Or they have a shrine to the PS3 in their house.

On the subject, I would agree. I would love to see a ridiculous level of awesome graphics, and they are using the same engine as Project Offset. Youtube that, and be awed. This game is going to nom children with it's blazing graphics glory.

Halo 3 is still the best game out there and its been out forever. graphics arent everything but ODST was a nice tweak of the engine.

What? I have only an Xbox 360 and I have a $2500 HDTV, no Blu-Ray though. But I know plenty of people without video game consoles who own a Blu-Ray player.

Also I don't get how $30 Blu-Rays make you greedy when other people are sporting $100 a month I-phones etc man.

I will look up that engine though.

The new lighting really showed how a small change makes the engine suddenly look better. It's nice to see that innovation. Bungie could obviously have blown us off and given us Halo 3 graphics out of the box. I have high hopes for Reach.

No it isn't. Halo 3 was good, it wasn't great, you can't have played other games if you think that. It was just an evolution of Halo 2, it wasn't that different from the step from Modern Warfare to Modern Warfare 2, in fact from the trailers it wasn't even close to that much of a step. Then realize that MW2 is on the SAME platform as its predessor, and Halo 3 is an evolution of a game running on an old console.

Halo3 did not have graphical innovation. Look at Halo:CE vs. Halo 2. I would like a similar jump. If not greater, because Halo 2 to Halo 3 was LESS of a jump then that (considerably) and it was a platform jump as well. Halo 2 was like HD gaming, before the 360. And its better then Oblivion etc. Halo 3 is at or below the level of MW1.

Btw - polls on bungie.net mean absolutely nothing, so please don't use them to try and prove some kind of point.

I think ODST lookes even better I can only hope R knocks it out the box.

Yeah ODST looks OK. It isn't great, I wouldn't even call it evolution, I would call it tweaked. The night time lighting looks good, but its an "expansion pack". So I don't consider it a full game, with a full development team behind it.

I want to have a bigger jump/similar jump from Halo:CE to Halo 2. I think that would make Reach great. It is the last Halo game after all according to Bungie.

We still haven't seen a big jump for moving to the X360.

The graphics for Reach will be better than halo 3 and ODST. Also they improve the graphics for every game they make.

What yeah they improve, but I don't want the jump to be as small as it was from Halo 2 to Halo 3 (especially considering that was a platform jump), or even smaller. That would be no good. I want a jump like Halo:CE to Halo 2 (which makes Halo:CE look like garbage) if not BETTER. Halo 2 like I said looks better then Oblivion IMO which is a 2005/6 AAA title, for the Xbox 360.

Halo 3's effective change was environmental. A lot of new features were added, like the better water and lighting effects, the increased photo-realism of faces, the better first-person perspective of weapons, animations, and such. Not much real character model jump besides the smoother animations and better lighting. I'd really like to see Bungie stretch the AAA engine to the max here. There's a mention of forces of a thousand plus Grunts attacking a base. I want to be there. Specifically, I want to be there with a turret, mowing down 1000 individually animated Grunts.

  • 10.04.2009 8:43 PM PDT

Halo 2 was in no way "innovative" in graphics for the time. Too much of the bump mapping made the game look odd, and everything looked bland, especially faces. Hell, I'd go so far as to say that I even thought Halo: CE was a "Prettier" game than Halo 2 ever was; animations were perfect, everything looked the way it was supposed to, then comes Halo 2's clunky look to completely undo itself.

Now DooM3, that was graphical innovation at the time.

I'm sure Reach will be pretty. Aside from the huge draw distances and amount of particle effects and floral details that could be rendered at once, Halo 3 wasn't the most amazing thing to come out of the 360 graphically, but it took physics leaps and bounds above just about every game available (Except maybe Half Life 2), and it still does. I could sacrifice graphics in Reach if it meant Halo has it's unscripted, random occurences, but if we can get both then great.

Modern warefare 2's visual design is horribly outdated, wtf are you talking about? the game is very low poly, textures are and always have been horrid, the game reuses the same smoke and particle effects over and over in every big scripted sequence, the one thing it has that makes the visual design seem good is the solid 60fps that makes it feel smooth.

Modernwarfare 2 runs on the same engine that CoD2 ran on, I beleive it powered an age old quake game as well.

I still laugh at people who think the engine is called the AAA engine.

Small...

halo 2... halo 3...

Thats a huge jump, far bigger then the halo 1 to 2 jump, notice how everything in halo 2 is flat, jagged, with little detail? notice how in halo 3, it's the opposite? yeah...

I'm a little disappointed that your life must be dull enough that having a pseudonym for a game engine's name that hasn't even been released causes you to laugh. To each his own I suppose.

It was a joke bud, didn't mean to make ya have an emotional outburst, also, the classic, instead of attacking a persons points, you attack the person.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Just a helpful comparison...

Halo 1

Halo 2

Halo 3

I didn't notice any points you made, sorry.

Either way, back on topic. The basic lack of Bungie releasing the game now means that they're still in the works. I read somewhere Reach has had (and will have) a two-year development cycle. So we should see great things come out of it.

Don't understand why people make such a huge deal of it when someone happens to call a game engine that has no released name whatsoever the "AAA Engine" (The only thing anyone knows it by).

No, it's not the real name. Yes, "AAA" is used to refer to something high quality. What's the big deal calling it that? It's not as if you don't know what they're talking about when they call it that.

I agree with the OP. I didnt see such a significant jump from Halo 2 to 3. Yes, there was an improvement but nothing that great.

After seeing a game like Uncharted and a couple others, I really hope that Bungie has set its own goals for improving graphics wise. However, I dont think we will see much of an improvement.

I would have a hard time believing that Bungie suddenly has this new engine that would vastly seperate itself from Halo 2/3/ODST. So personally, I am not expecting anything eyepopping like a few other games have right now. Would I love to be proven wrong? Absolutely, but I am not counting on it.
