First of all.
THIS IS A CAMPAIGN ONLY IDEA!
No multiplayer whatsoever.
============================================================= ==
Ok,
Who here's played Descent, 1,2 or 3?
Who here's played Freespace 1 or 2?
Best flight simulator/space battle games of all time.

I'm going to be focusing on Freespace for this thread.
Its an incredible game, you have your spaceship and your squadron, each level will give you objectives, as in most games, however everysingle objective you do has varying levels of success, for instance, a huge frigate is attacking one of your cruisers, you have to dstroy 3 of its cannons, if you only manage to take out one, you still complete the mission, but then later on that could have been your biggest mistake. You get bonus points for squadron members surving and things like that.
Well,
Here's the Halo part.
Reach was definitely not just a battle on the ground. The entire human/covenant war was nearly completely decided on space battles. All I'm saying is two, maybe three space based missions, where you fly out in a Longsword and take out key points on a Covenant ship. If you succeed further levels in the campaign will prove easier, if you fail then they are harder.
These levels could be replayed as anyothers, but could also be skipable for those die hard Halo fans who hate anything but being a walking tank marching through armies of covenant. I would prefer just a little more mixture in types of level myself.
Anyway,
I guess this idea could be incorporated into multiplayer although I think that really would create a Halo battlefront.

Guys, if you'd played freespace, you know this would be pretty good if done in a similar way.

wikipedia freespace article

Thanks.

That would be sweet but highly unlikely due to the fact that wouldnt work in a shooter but maybe in halo wars 2 if that comes.

Although Halo wars is an RTS.

I mean it like Freespace.
First person view from inside your spaceship.

through your eyes inside the spaceship.

I would like to have a dog fight in space as a mission in campaign, if that's what you mean.

if thats what you mean of sure i thought u talk about commanding a whole fleet. srry

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Since Reach is a confirmed FPS I doubt anything like this would happen, though a Halo space battle game wouldn't be that much of a stretch if done right. The hard thing though would be to make it entertaining and not too hard without ruining the story.

In the books UNSC does not fair well in space battle against the Covenant. It would kind of suck to take part in theatres of battle, that ultimately result in the loss of a planet, or a huge chunk of the fleet everything, the game would get mundane.

Sorry, I'm American. I couldn't care less about those sorts of things.

What a shock -_-

That would be awesome.

Kinda like and amped up version of Battlefront 2 space battles!

amazing...

the thing that could solve the problum with how it would mess with the books story is that ships would have to travel through slip space to get to the battle zone.

I would like to have a map that plays out like a dogfight in multiplayer.

Its like a cross between a dog fight and objective based missions.

BYAHH

I like the idea of fights on space but the idea of driving a spaceship seems very unhalo.

Chief vs the scarab? I find that hard to believe to roundhouse boot the scarab's figurative emotion out of the gaming zone.

Same here.

Also, this idea sounds like it would handle just like a banshee mission, but with a larger vehicle than a banshee. I don't see that as completely out of the question.

  • 10.06.2009 8:55 AM PDT

But the great thing about vehicles in Halo is that we can enter and exit them at will, unlike most games, which force you to stay in them. If space battles were a reality, this freedom would be gone.

Who ever said it would playout like the Banshee level is mainly correct, although there would be less movement outide the ship, except maybe with some EVA thruster pack usage...
