Well, we probably all know about Halo: Combat Evolved's PC brother, and the Custom Edition that you can get for it. If so, a lot of people will realise how awesome custom made maps really are. The main examples are Coldsnap, and a nice model of New Mombasa.

So, that got me thinking: could this be used in Reach?

I propose that people who purchase Reach can download a map editor for the PC from Bungie.net so that they can make their own custom maps. These people can then upload their map(s) to Bungie.net to their Fileshare for Reach, and others can download it from them. Additionally, Bungie Favourites (if it were to be implemented) would be able to highlight the best custom maps for download.

On top of this, there should still be a Forge editor, for those who lack the skills required to create such awesome content. The new custom maps would not be Forgeable, unless some super system were created.

What do you think?

Would be awesome, but would require quite a bit of testing wouldn't it?

Definately a good idea. If in doubt Bungie should look at Valve's plans to turn user created MODS for Left 4 Dead 2 into DLC.

Something comparable to mod support (i.e. UT3 on PS3) for Halo Reach would be fantastic!

I would definitely love this. I would love to get my hands on a tool like this. I would gladly pay 30 extra dollars for a map making tool for this, if that was what was required to have it made.

If it can actually get to work, then I support this idea 100%. I loved playing on the user-made maps for Custom Edition.

The main problem I can see arising is server space - with all those maps being created and uploaded, it has a high possibility of taking up too much space. There's also the possibility of users putting adult material into their maps.

But yeah, if they can somehow manage to get this working, then it would be just great.

For server space, limit to the megabyte, not the amount of files. And for content, users would just flag the offending files.

Agreed. Server space would be a huge issue, though it can always be overcome.
As for adult material, all you would need to do is have a report feature, like the forums, on the file shares in game and on B.net, and it will definitely get reported.

Indeed. A flagging feature would be a necessity. As for limiting server space, a maximum file size would need to be implemented, and a maximum number of files, too.

With Custom Edition map files being about 40mb each, and 80-ish for the biggest maps (Coldsnap is 70mb), I'd think the smaller Reach maps would easily be 80-100mb. There will be so much more detail to load. Add new vehicles to the mix, and you've got about 200mb to work with, per user.

That's a lot of data.

I'd say give a 1G of data to player with Bungie Pro. This way, players who are serious about making maps can pay their once a year price, and get to make a large amount of maps to place on their file share.
Normal players, however, would be limited to about 100-200MB, which means only about one decenct map for each player.
1G is a lot of memory space, though, so I don't know how exactly Bungie would provide that.

Very true. I wonder if there's a way to link the servers to your Xbox, and use you Xbox as a server itself. Like torrenting. Have several people who provide the data, or even just have the one.

Sure, it'd be a huge challenge to make, but the rewards would be epic. Finally, people would be able to fly Pelicans, drive Scarabs, and (the really ambitious) fly UNSC Frigates.

=)

yes Reach needs a full map editor like in crysis or far cry 2. Also a playlist with user created maps only the best ones get chosen and into matchmaking, this equal infinite maps. Infinite fun, Bungie you wont make Blood Glutch? never mind WE Will make it.

Yeah no. I don't think you have any idea the lengths people go through to make those maps. Your average idiot isn't even going to be able to make a textureless square map by himself. Plus I'd say out of all the Halo CE maps made, only 60 or so of them are any good. Now throw that ratio onto a group of players much larger than the Custom Edition community, divide the ability, creativity, and intelligence by 2, then realise that the console will never have as many options as the PC, and you'll see that this would be an enourmous waste of time. As much fun as it is to pwn nubs on a Segway, it's not worth 3,000,000 maps that crash the game on load.

Valve added an option in L4d so that you can play other people's custom campaigns/versus maps from the main menu. I think Reach would have a harder time with this since the graphics are better and more explosions/bigger scaled gameplay than L4D

Obviously a forge type editor would come into play here. You would be limited to only game objects, vehicles, and stuff like that. The real editor will be making real buildings, bases, terrain, and stuff like that. It really does suck to make a base out of boxes and ramps and stuff, which gives you such a limited pool of what you can make. With a map editor as described, you could, at least, make an actual map.
These maps would be editable in forge, but stuff like the bases you make would be static, as with the forge on maps like Highground.

One possibility for this map editor is that it is PC based, and then the file itself is downloaded to Halo: Reach via a fileshare system.

Yes. i suck at forging, let alone map editing. but my god, the random things i would make would be so immense that the world would implode.

It's a great idea, I would really love something like that, since there seems to be no end to this community's creativity/originality. Although a project like this would require an enormous amount of effort, I believe the rewards would be huge for Bungie and the community as a whole.
