Subject: REAL User-Created Maps

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

It's a great idea, I would really love something like that, since there seems to be no end to this community's creativity/originality. Although a project like this would require an enormous amount of effort, I believe the rewards would be huge for Bungie and the community as a whole.

For one, Bungie wouldn't have quite as much pressure to quick release map packs, like they were for Halo 2/3.

I wish I was still legendary.

This would be really cool. The only problem I can see is space.

You're saying 1 gigabyte for each pro suscriber, right? Let's look at the Halo 3 players from the past few days. About 1.5 million.

Of these 1.5, let's say about 450,000 had Bungie Pro. That's 450,000 gigabytes of space - 450 terabytes of space JUST FOR THEM. NOBODY has a server bank that large that's open to the public.

True. Thus, the only logical thing to do is make the map maker even more exclusive. Perhaps a different package, then? Say, all of the Bungie pro features, and then the map editor?
The price would be substantially higher, thus making it only for more serious map editors.

Something comparable to Far-cry 2's map editor for Halo Reach would be fantastic!

I wish I was still legendary.

Ah. Just realised something:

The maps probably won't be 100+MB. They'll probably have some sort of new compression algorithm to make them 100 at the most, probably closer to the 50 mark if they're not interactive.

If each normal user was given 50-100MB to work with in their file share (I think they're currently given like 25?), and each bungie pro user 200MB, then you can greatly cut down on the amount of space needed.

450,000 x 0.2 = 90,000GB = 90TB (my maths is screwed, so this may well actually be 9tb, don't take my word for it). Still a MASSIVE amount of space needed, but much, much cheaper and maintainable. You could buy 90 of those 1TB HDDs and put them in, which is really less than 10,000 dollars - tiny for game development.

Download times would be an issue though. big maps might take a while and the downloading would make online play really slow.

There are a lot of flaws with the idea that would need to eb thought out, but it is great.

A paid map editor...that could work. I know I'd pay for it if it was less than $30. And let's face it - when someone gets it who isn't really good at making maps, and realises it's 10x more complicated than forge and they can't even begin to make stuff, how likely are they to use it?

just put a size limit on the default map, and a 1mb limit on objects (they take up a couple of KB when stuck on a map), and add a report feature so I can't upload pronz.

Subject: An Idea for REAL Custom Maps

Posted by: Hylebos
Would be awesome, but would require quite a bit of testing wouldn't it?
This is true, but Bungie could work on that and integrate it later after Reach's release. Maybe put a price tag on it and bam, incredible replay value has just been added.

Perhaps a better way to allow players access to the map maker is add an item on the marketplace for let's say... 20 dollars. You'd just have to pay 20 dollars to make your own custom maps. When downloaded, a new lobby becomes available for players who have purchased and downloaded it. Only people who haven't purchased it can not access this lobby. If said people try to join people in the "Map Maker" lobby, it will inform everyone that said person/people do not have the lobby available, and the game will be unable to start. Something like how it tells people playing Halo 3 that there's someone using Halo 3: Mythic, rendering it impossible to play Campaign with them.

I'd want this program on PC, making things like Maps is a lot easier on PC. And anyone who is new at it can learn if they take a day or two with just playing with it. This is how people wanted Forge to be like, available on PC to make things even and looking neat.Sure, there will be some who will not use it, there will be some not good at it, but I think it'd be way more beneficial to the game than against it. And could also help those who want to get a Career in the gaming industry to get a hint or two of what they'd be dealing with.

A "forge" on the PC would be an endlessly more powerful system than the current console one. (That is assuming, of course, that we can import and create our own models, materials, particles, lights, ect.)This obviously opens up many doors for player created content, something I would greatly enjoy.

As for space allocation issues, 450TB is not quite so large a volume of data anymore. I am willing to assume that Bungie already has at least that much storage on hand, at the current market value you could probably purchase that much space with ~$45,000. For a game company that sells millions of games every couple years, its not that much. (I am aware MS takes a certain portion of this, but there should be a large amount going to Bungie regardless.)

Your speaking almost of making a whole game itself, that would be very nice tool set, but just the perfect map creator would be enough for me. What you speak of is a huge step to making your own game basically, heh, like how some of those really good CE players can do.

i'm definitely no programmer or designer (yet =p) but could it not work like a simpler map pack?... couldn't you make a map "publish" it to some online Microsoft thing, then go onto your x-box and download it like a map pack?

THIS would be really useful for a sanctuary exact remake. Also it would be better for the community because Microsoft wont make us pay them for new maps if they are created by the community. And Bungie could use the maps in playlist ftw. Sanctuary ftw

Microsoft wont make us pay them for new maps
This is probably one of the big reason that we will NOT be able to have this feature that and certain people will try to modify and blow it fro the rest of us. I'm just wondering when Microsoft will be somewhat fair to their costumers?
