I wish I was still legendary.
Ah. Just realised something:
The maps probably won't be 100+MB. They'll probably have some sort of new compression algorithm to make them 100 at the most, probably closer to the 50 mark if they're not interactive.
If each normal user was given 50-100MB to work with in their file share (I think they're currently given like 25?), and each bungie pro user 200MB, then you can greatly cut down on the amount of space needed.
450,000 x 0.2 = 90,000GB = 90TB (my maths is screwed, so this may well actually be 9tb, don't take my word for it). Still a MASSIVE amount of space needed, but much, much cheaper and maintainable. You could buy 90 of those 1TB HDDs and put them in, which is really less than 10,000 dollars - tiny for game development.
Download times would be an issue though. big maps might take a while and the downloading would make online play really slow.
There are a lot of flaws with the idea that would need to eb thought out, but it is great.
A paid map editor...that could work. I know I'd pay for it if it was less than $30. And let's face it - when someone gets it who isn't really good at making maps, and realises it's 10x more complicated than forge and they can't even begin to make stuff, how likely are they to use it?
just put a size limit on the default map, and a 1mb limit on objects (they take up a couple of KB when stuck on a map), and add a report feature so I can't upload pronz.
