Subject: Should there be flood in Reach?

I say definitely not, the flood is possibly the worst thing that ever happened to a video game ever. What do you think?

Um... I like Halo? I don't really know what to say. I'm a student at the moment, I hope to become a criminal profiler, and I enjoy pretty much everything as long as it's good.

NO!

No.

It is possible to commit no errors and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life.

Cheeto is the only one among you that doesn't suck.

Absolutely not. Not only would it destroy the Halo timeline, but the Flood are simply not fun to fight.

No. The Flood worked in Halo 1 because they were unexpected, and the build-up to them appearing was great with the swamp environment, the whole missing marines fiasco, and Jenkins' camera recording.

In Halo 2 and 3, they were just there to be there. There were just extra, and annoying.

Flood were never "there just to be there." Bungie doesn't just throw in a bunch of creatures for the hell of it, they're in the game because they represent an important concept, maybe you've heard of the Forerunners? They're kind of important, and, oh yeah, those rings we played on for the first two (2) games and then that big thing, what's it called...the Ark? Yeah, all there because of the Flood! The Flood is a vital part of Halo, and while they totally should not be in Reach, they are in no way obsolete or ways to fill in game time.

  • 10.07.2009 7:48 PM PDT

The flood were released in halo1 and reach is before halo1 so they won't be in it.

Well, I felt they were just there to be there. You know, I have a thing that's called...what's it called, an opinion? Maybe you've heard of it? Considering this is, umm...what's it again, a forum? A place where we can...what's it for, express our opinions?

Your opinion is welcome, but saying that Bungie threw in a random species for us to fight against just to fill in some play time is ridiculous. The Flood has a backstory, a history just like the Spartan program, just like the reasons the Covenant did what they did. It adds another layer, not a shallow money-making ploy.

  • 10.07.2009 7:57 PM PDT

I miss playing Halo with my friends.

Only if there was a Flood Firefight mode, and in Infection gametypes.

He's not saying that the Flood were thrown into the story, he's saying that the Flood in Halo 2 and 3 served mainly as filler to the gameplay.

The Covenant and the Humans discovered the Flood on Alpha Halo (Halo:CE). If Halo:CE takes place after Reach, then there would be no Flood on Reach.

The way they presented the Flood in Halo 2 & 3 wasn't good at all. I realize that the Flood are important to the Halo story, yes the Halo rings wouldn't exist without the Flood. But still, they could have been handled a lot better.

Like I said, the build-up to the Flood in Halo 1 was great; they were unexpected and they were tough to fight. In Halo 2 & 3, it seemed like they were just thrown in for the hell of it. There was no build-up, there was no tension. On top of that, they became way too easy to fight, so instead of seeing them as a force to be reckoned with, I saw them as a nuisance.

It seemed like he meant that they were there just to throw something to some players to piss them off. Bungie works hard developing their story lines. I find myself overwhelmed when I look up things relating to Halo, it truly is it's own universe.

The Covenant and the Humans discovered the Flood on Alpha Halo (Halo:CE). If Halo:CE takes place after Reach, then there would be no Flood on Reach.
1. Halo Wars. The UNSC encountered the Flood in 2531 at the earlist known date. Keep that phrase in mind. It means "though the first time we saw something was in ___ game, that doesn't mean it's the first time that thing or event occured."

It's possible that, like the Spirit of Fire, anyone who comes into contact with the Flood in Halo REACH are either killed or trapped out of communication by the end of the game, then no canon is broken.

It wouldn't matter anyway. The novels state that messages in slipspace still take weeks to go place to place like the ships do. So any message sent from Reach to the PoA regarding the Flood would have gotten there after the ship crashed onto the surface, in which case it would not be recieved.

Or maybe the Flood/Forerunner were just kept secret. We have known of Forerunner artifacts for a long time but ONI kept it hidden. Cortana only first learned about the Forerunner on Halo, so ONI is very capable of keeping secrets. Another example are the Spartan-IIIs.

The UNSC may have known about the Flood for a 50 years. We don't know everything. But each game is giving us a little bit more.

There can be Flood in Halo: REACH without stepping on any of the canon.

P.S. The Halo Graphic Novel shows us that the Covenant knew of the Flood long before Alpha Halo as the Minor Prophet scolds Halfjaw for not paying attention to his studies of the Flood which are an integral part of the Covenant religion (kind of like Sin, the Flood are here to test the Covenant before they can join the Gods on the Great Journey).

Great stuff. There are always a few ways around canon. The Flood in Halo Wars had quite a few new forms, we might get to see them in Halo: Reach, if there's any flood at all. I really could do without the air forms though...

  • 10.07.2009 8:13 PM PDT

Were it so easy.

Hell no.

  • 10.07.2009 8:30 PM PDT

In a word: no

In two: Hell no

  • 10.07.2009 8:32 PM PDT

Personally, I think an actual "skilled" person in Halo 3 is someone who knows how to win with every weapon and combo in the game, not just a single weapon like the BR, Sniper, or even the AR. Of course, that excludes me, as I have yet to get a kill with dual plasma pistols. :D

Yes. Fighting the same 10 or so Covenant over and over will get boring. Even if they can't be in the campaign for story reasons, I don't see why they shouldn't be in multiplayer, like Infection or Firefight.
