Subject: ranking system for bungie.net users

Hmmm... I have always been dead set against ranking systems in forums for many reasons. To me, it just opens the door for people to act like jerk-offs to new users because they have a low rank. I mean, I don't post on the main forums much, so I probably wouldn't get a high karma rating. But despite that, I have been here longer the most other active members!

I suppose it all depends how the system is implemented. In my opinion, it's always safer to just say no to ranks in forums, but I'm sure if Achronos is sure about it, it will come out ok!

There needs to be some kind of system to promote good discussion. Stick doesn't tend to be very effective without carrot.

What I think people don't get is that whether or not its karma, post count, etc. The objective isn't to get as much "prestige" as you can.. just be yourself around here and let your status reflect that.

Who said it would be a forum ranking? :)

A Ranking System just like some other forums?

I used to be on a forum called Supercars.net

They had a forum of cars where you had ranks and a karma system and it showed how many posts you had. Many competed for this ranks by posting everywhere. The Moderators were loosely trained and moderated that much. You could have custom avatars all you want and premium account with gold text.

Those were the days.... Before I left.

I'm not that active, but never dead.

I think Instead of making some complicated mathimatical system to calcuate just how 'cool' and loyal members are, we should just do what Bungie.net is doing right now, giving custom avatars and Ranks to people who have contributed to the community.

MrSmiley for example, has a custom rank and avatar because of the theme he submitted. What we need to do is created more ways for people to contribute to the community. Themes is just one way.

What can you do for the community that deserves a seperate rank and Avatar?

(Besides its easier for the web-team if they don't have to make something ;) )

The Most Obvious Use for the "X" Button

MALSH

Dude, Pimps at Sea is like Halo, going 30 knots in a harbour, being chased by clippers and Man-o-war. And the Man-o-war are firing.

Can I have a rank for *stab*bing?

Oh... contributing... ya... Darn.

This idea is a damn fine one. And one that (hint) might happen

I personally like the idea, of course I'd like to see how the problem of posters in the Flood and their associated sycophants abusing the system would be solved...

That's what your Mom said! She said that in a different context of course, and it confused the hell out of me.
(This is one of the many reasons why I'll have a bad rank :) )

I say forget karma, ranks, ect. Start doing community related things.

Theme contest, avatar contest, movie contest, comic, Most Valueable forum post awards. Things to get the community involved. Not just award members that post alot. users can be awarded with custom avatars, titles, and such. I say that would make everyone happy.

7ru7h.

And not pwned by popularity alone, either. BBQ is too general to be pwned by honey mustard, since honey mustard is a specific type of mustard. That type of generic pwnage of sauce-like condiments is scientifically undeterminable. Honey mustard does pwn some types of BBQ sauce, however. But that's still a small minority pwned. Maybe if Smiley said 'Honey Mustard Pwns Honey BBQ,' the statement would be more measurable (but still not according to my personal opinion). Agreed, Jim.

However, it depends on what the condiments are used for. For example, I would agree that BBQ sauce on a stake would be better than Honey Mustard on a steak. But between BBQ flavored chips and Honey Mustard and Onion Pieces, the Pieces get my vote.

Chips and pieces are two different foods. For that contest to be fair, you'd have to consider both condiments for both items. Even if that were the case, what you mentioned is completely irrelevant, as the stuff on chips and pieces is a powder; artificial BBQ and mustard products. We're talking about the amorphous solid stuff; regular sauces. Oh, and honey mustard is good on steak, probably something that would complement honey mustard in favor of most BBQ sauces in my opinion. The sweetness of honey mustard is sextacular on top of a rich, juicy steak. BBQ sauce is too similar and bold for steak when you think about savoring a sweet sauce on it.

I would prefer BBQ over Honey Mustard on my steak, but the steaks we buy are marinated in Frank's Special Sauce (makes the outside look charred black) and they do not require any BBQ sauce or Honey Mustard to increase the orgasmic taste of the steak.

But really, Salt and Vinegar chips taste better than the BBQ chips and the Pieces (yet another irrelevant opinion).

When I overlooked that reply, I read 'Frank's Special Sauce' and 'orgasmic' particularly, I thought of Frankie, and GODDAMNIT VISUAL IMAGINATION, STOP!

Never post anything about orgasms, special sauces, and bald Scottish Bungie employees ever again, because the visual part of my brain works faster than usual.

Said the man who posted "sextacular," "on top of," and "rich and juicy" in the same sentence.

If there's going to be a ranking system on the forum, I don't think I could stand all the stand-byers and hackers.

The problem is, everyone will go for the prestige. And you know this is true.

There are already people around here posting numerous times a day, usually short and thoughtless posts, ones that are not mandatory, and restating their opinion over and over again. The trick is recognizing the admirable longtime forum regulars from the ones who have posted more, been here for far less, and may have gained little respect in that time frame.
