They said you're a pistol-betch, whatever that means.~WebMaster
The Original 7717 ILBs Posts...

It'd be interersting to see the implementation of a feature... but, I think the abuse would be rampant. With such a large community, there will allways be the few who team up and do the ol "I'll mod you up if you mod me up," kinda deal. It will just become more of a competition.

With a forum community as large as B.Net has, I just find it very hard to believe that you'd be able to create a mod system that will reflect which users are more helpful versus which users just want the new avatar, title, whatever the reward may be.

Opinion will always eek it's way into a modding situation. "Halo 3 will not have flood! Yes it will - negga-mod for you!"

Another problem with it can be seen right now in the Flood. Popularity polls are rampant... and create a group of users who may not be the most helpful, or nicest, but because they are ranked as popular, their ego inflates, they can get away with it.

I think it'd be a great feature, but elitism, followings, anarchy, rebellion, spam, and all the rest may cause it to have some rough patches that it simply can't get over.

One of the main reasons I don't post over at RvB, despite having an account for 8+ months, is because I don't feel like dealing with the Karma. Sure, it helps keep the "w00t first post" down to a minimum, but it's just too complex, and once you get a group of people with a higher karma level then the others, they form their own group of superiority, where anything they say get's modded postively by other members of their "super" group, despite the fact that it may be a flame/utter bashing.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

Who said it would be a forum ranking? :)

Posted by: mrsmiley
Hmmm... I have always been dead set against ranking systems in forums for many reasons. To me, it just opens the door for people to act like jerk-offs to new users because they have a low rank. I mean, I don't post on the main forums much, so I probably wouldn't get a high karma rating. But despite that, I have been here longer the most other active members!

I suppose it all depends how the system is implemented. In my opinion, it's always safer to just say no to ranks in forums, but I'm sure if Achronos is sure about it, it will come out ok!

0MG 73H 5P01L3RZ!!!11 Wow... not a forum ranking, eh? I don't see how else you can implement it... you guys must be geniuses or something! =D

Oh, and instead of going off-topic about BBQ vs. Honey Mustard here, I recommend you take it to the post Sketch made almost a year ago at MSXL. It's still goin strong!

Actually Honey Mustard was even with BBQ.

However I think the ranking system that we got is good because it is based on Bungie.net rather than Bungie.net Forums. You have us members on the bottom of the totem pool because we don't do anything accept post on the forum (Even though some of it is good helpful advice to other members). You have the Theme Masters who make some of the Art that apears on Bungie.net like Avatars and group themes. You have the Moderators who are volunteers. Then you have Bungie employees at the top of the totem poll. So the ranks here are just fine.

The good thing about karma is that it judges the quality of a post. Any old person can post, but to make a post of good quality is a different one.

I'm now intreaged in Maka's hint and i wholly agree that new ways of contributing to the community is needed and is much better than any other system. I'm willing to make a guess in saying this new contribution thing is some how connected to the 7th Column council.

As for the bragging about rewards, it really can't be helped. With very strict rules though, it will hopefully work.

No, a ranking system wouldn't be very good. You hear about people cheating on Live just to get a better rank. Who knows what they would do here? Also, elitism is another problem. Bungie employies and Mods should be the only ones who can give you a "rank".

I'm sorry if i'm annoying you, but if you only read the rules and stickies here, i wouldn't have to keep telling you.

I do this because i want to promote the rules for others aswell as for you. If i don't tell you, others will.

I'am not sure it would work to well in Zanzibar people just seem to like pissing other people off in there mayby a ranking system would put an end to this though if it can be done right. I'd like to see a post counter.

A post counter would only lead to people bragging about how many posts they have and also doesn't show the quality of the posts which, i believe, to be the most important thing.

The objective isn't to get as much "prestige" as you can.. just be yourself around here and let your status reflect that.

The problem is, everyone will go for the prestige. And you know this is true.

That's the point, isn't it?

I thought that a karma system is supposed to encourage good behaviour by rewarding it in some visible manner while discouraging bad behaviour by removing these rewards or other privileges. So we want people to go for the prestige, because (if the karma system is built properly, which ain't easy I admit) the way to earn prestige should be by playing nice.

-- Steve will now open the floor for the debate: Karma earned through Good Works or by Moderators' Grace alone? Followed by a reenactment of the 100 Years' War through network play of various Bungie games.

That is a problem. However, a lot of the Septagon members are much more responsible and might serve to knock down the undeserving Flood members a few pegs. Yes, it'd need a lot of work in order to work fairly, but I'd hardly say it's beyond Bungie.

The elitism in that post just... just... oozes :P

Oh yea, he was definitely saying that some members are better than others. The tru7h is, some septagon members are more responsible.

I think a better chocice of words is dedicated. if I'll seen a more dedicated fan base then old-school Marathon fans then I'll be amazed. However, I have to agree a post counting system is absolutely the worst thing possible as this will lead to useless small posts that really communicate nothing in order for the user to acumulate his post count. However on the RvB forums the karma system works so that if you have been getting too many negative karma points and you have nothing left, you cannot give, or take away other people's points. Because of this feature only people who deserve and accumulate karma points will be able to give them out to other people, and this effectively controls who is giving and taking away karma points.

MSXL: The Last Honest Chapter

If the system at all requires mods to give out karma points, it will fail. Simply because the sheer mass of members and posts will not allow for the mods to review them all. And if they can't review everything, there will be nothing but incessant whining. *shudders* I dunno how they plan to do it, and I know that what I say won't change what they are currently almost done working on, so I'm gonna shut up and wait till it is released! GO ACHRONOS!

Discipline is my Sword,
Faith is my Shield,
Do not leap blindly into uncertainty,
And you may live to reap the rewards.

"The Important Thing Is To Never Stop Questioning,"

So, after reading this entire thread and mulling over it for about 10 minutes, this seems like the most likely system to be implemented to me.

Step One:
Achronos himself said that step one was getting the points system into place and seeing if it works. In other words: Programming it into B.net altogether and deciding upon what would give points. Should running a highly successful chapter that betters the whole of the 7th column get you points? Should being a regular helpful poster in the main Forums get you points? What should get you points? This, I think is the biggest issue.

Step Two:
Deciding upon what said points would obtain you. Now Achronos and Makaveli have both implied that it would not be a ranking system yet a way to gain Bungie.net rewards, such as Avatars and Titles and such. So here is issue #2. What can Bungie give its members for gaing said points? Avatars, Titles, Ad's on the front page for Chapters, Bungie Swag, etc....? All this needs to be decided upon and then implemented into the already placed points system, which could take a long time.

Step Three:
Following through. The Bungie.net staff already is flooded with Avatar and Theme submissions to gain custom Title/Avatars and such, and because of this have been slow to give out rewards. With the new system in place more rewards will most likely be given out and allot more submission will be made. Bungie may have to increase its Web Team to handle all of this workload. And if it doesn’t, rewards could take even longer than they have at the moment, unless the current Web Team works their Butts off.

Now, keep in mind, this is all just speculation by me and is in no way Bungie’s official word on the subject, we only have Achronos’ Posts and the Few Mod’s posts to go by here. This seem to me like what they may be planning though. It is also apparent to me that if it is, or something similar, that this will take much planning and testing over time, and therefore we cannot wish to see the full system in place anytime in the near future. In other words: Don't get your hopes up. Now again this is all just speculation by me, so it could or could not be true. We will not know until Bungie says something Official on it. (though it seems like they are going to keep it as secret as possible to be able to surprise the members)

On a side note, I noticed a test of the Forums Search Engine ran on Bungie.net a while back, does this mean it's again, coming soon?

It won't be the classic "post more, rank up" scenario. I believe it'll be based on a karma system. IF it is implemented.

sorry I didnt read it all to see if this was mentioned about but I have to say it anyway... redvsblue.com does this and it works they dont have to worry about idiotd getting stupid threads casue onlyu people with +5 karma can post threads and +20 get to go to a speiial forum... but I like this right now too

Agreed 100%. What i've got from all the hints so far, is that there will be more ways in which a member can participate in helping or doing something for the community. Really though i'll go with mrsmiley and just wait and see. I'm sure they'll have taken in some feedback from the community and, from the sounds of it, something new will becoming sooner than we expect..
