Should Halo: Reach be made to support MLG?

I think it should be made like Halo 3 and if it was it would be good for Bungie i'm sure Bungie makes off profit off MLG

MLG can adapt if necessary, but bungie will no doubt do similar things to what they did in h3.

It would start a complete war, between those who hate MLG and those who like it.

Some people dont like MLG like, at all.
And some people love MLG that they just want to make sweet monkey love to it.
It'll start a war.

Let's clarify something, no game is made for MLG, period. MLG takes games and changes available gametypes and options to conform to their playstyle.

Will Reach have a MLG playlist? Most assuredly, and I see no problem with this. But will the game be developed with consideration to MLG wants and needs? I highly doubt it, MLG is still a minority in the gaming world.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I heard a great argument by this from someone, so I'll try and explain it. Casual gamers are the major demographic in the gaming community. Bungie purposely makes games to attract casual gamers. From this, competitive factions like MLG turn these games into competitive games. You can't really make competitive games, as all are competitive in nature, but catering a game to a minority fan base would make Bungie lose a lot of money. Something no one wants to do in this economy.

MLG is competitive play, So what you are saying is will Reach feature competitive play. Since all games in the history of man have competitive aspects to them, I would say definitely.

Yeah, and MLG can go F*** itself because it really gets rid of the recreation aspect of gaming!

Not so much MLG as much as some of it's members. MLG is poorly represented on these boards by several members who often harp on skill level and it's relation to being right. Thankfully this is not the opinion of MLG as a group, at least not openly.

I don't mind a community that likes to be hyper-competitive, but when people start showing up and acting like everyone who does not conform to it are worthless, then there is a problem.

Wow, that is a blatant logical fallacy if I ever saw one. By your logic, Mario Kart would be an MLG game.

MLG style multiplayer is usually characterized by small-scale (4v4) battles on small, symmetrical maps, with no vehicles and most of the "skill-less" equipment and power weapons removed. If the MLG had their way, Halo multiplayer would be in an empty room with battle rifles only and nothing to hide behind.

With that said, I think my personal rewording of the OP's question would be:

will the multiplayer in Reach be similar to Halo 3 and it's predecessors (or at least be able to be stripped down to it through custom gametypes), or will Bungie try and do something different this time around?

And when I say something different, I do NOT mean class based. That's not even different, that's just copying the competitor, and there is a ton of other class-based shooters out there.

Personally, I always wanted to see the same Halo gameplay I know and love transported to a much larger battlefield, like 32-64 players, a slightly larger emphasis on vehicles, and more meaningful objectives than CTF/territories. But that's just me. I'm sure whatever Bungie comes up with will be great.

  • 10.09.2009 10:49 AM PDT

Bungie makes games, and hopes that other people likes them. However, they have been wildly successful in part because if you don't like their maps or settings they give you, they supply forge and custom game options to create a gaming experience tailored to what you want.

It makes much more sense for them to give us a ton of options in Reach to let groups of people like MLG decide how they want to play than designing the game for only one group of people.

  • 10.09.2009 10:56 AM PDT

No.

They already think they own Halo 3, so why Reach?

Well when Bungie showed ODST at the recent MLG Event one of the Bungie guys said that every map design dude or however you call them has to go to one mlg event next year. So they do care what the competitive community (mlg) thinks and wants. Bungie invited people from mlg for patch 1.1 and obviously they kinda listen to mlg in terms of mappacks (lockout, chill out and midship were all popular mlg maps), citadel seems like a perfect mlg map as well.
Bungie does care, MLG got it's own permanent playlist, no other halo community has that. But of course the big mass of casual gamers is what bungie cares about.
So they won't screw mlg by removing all mid range weapons, but they won't make a halo the way mlg wants it to.

EDIT: They also gave recon to the two best halo 2 mlg teams..

Grifball... Rocket Race... Infection... Team Swat... yup, guess MLG is the only community Bungie has ever listened to.

Maybe you should look up the definition of permanent, or lern to read. Griffball is Double exp WEEKEND, so is Infection.
While Swat and Rocket Race were created by bungie, not by a group of the halo community.

Grifball was made by roosterteeth, Rocket Race was made by the community, and infection was around during the days of Halo 2, just not an official gametype. Check your facts before you pull them out of your ass.

I think you still did not get the meaning of permanent.
With permanent I mean their for longer than a weekend, the mlg playlist has been around for one and a half year, while infection and griffball are around for one weekend at a time.
And I'm pretty sure one of the guys at bungie, I think sketch, came up with rocket race. The community over here just thought it was awesome. Also it staid for how long? Half a year?

EDIT: And don't get me wrong I love Bungies games, it's those nice games that come out every 3 years and are fun enough to play them for the next 3 years. It's just that bungie changes weapons, gameplay and map design everytime in a way that I don't like. It's personal preference. MLG changed it in both halo 2 and halo 3 to something I do love and enjoy, that's the only reason I do play MLG quiet often.

All of that may be true, but that doesn't take away from my point, the game will not be made for MLG, it will be made for everyone, and individual groups will take from it what they will, like they always have, MLG included.

That's what I said near the end. I only said that bungie won't screw mlg over, but overall they will make a game for the casual gamer, I would do the same if I were Bungie. I'm aware of that fact and I love Bungie for the huge amount of customization and the MLG Playlist.
