Firstly i would like to say that i hope there won't be character classes. What i'm saying here is what they could do to make not all classes (if classes happened) be just a variation on spartan armour.

If character classes were to happen online it would be better to bring in a lot more of the halo canon instead of inventing a load of new spartan roles and roles for armour permutations. What Bungie could do is take characters from both sides of the human covenant war and instead of elites and spartans (and maybe brutes) having the same shields, damage, speed etc they could make each species different, they could have advantages in some areas and weaknesses in others.

Spartans: Spartans would probably be the starting point for other classes with 3/5 stars in everything (or whatever rating system would be used, i'll use stars for now).

Elites:Probably quite similar to the Spartans with maybe a couple of differences. Maybe more health but less shields.

Brutes:Yup they're new but would bring a lot to the field if classes were in the game. Less speed due to their size perhaps and worse shields (you've seen them their armour falls off when the shields deplete) but greater melee (but maybe slower)and jump distance as well as more health.

Spartan 3s: Also new to the playing field but not to the canon. Featured in the book Ghosts of Onyx as expendable super soldiers the Spartan 3s would play much differently than spartan 2s (maybe more like ODSTs).
Maybe a bit quicker than the Spartan 2s as their armour would be lighter and melee would be of similar strength. Shields would be replaced with stamina as in ODST. This would not be as effective as shields and some attacks would be able to cut right through stamina.
Camo as a special ability would be added to Spartan 3s and could be kept active for short amounts of time (like Arby in halo 2s campaign).

ODSTs: I know you want them. VISR mode instead of equipment but extra grenade capacity. Stamina would be less than spartan 3s as well as melee being weaker and jump height less. Why bother using them then?
Ever played Section 8? If you have then you know how the characters spawn in that, from the air! HEV drop pods would allow you to spawn anywhere on the map to either help your friends or snag the power weapons early on in the game.

Starting Weapons: Silenced SMG and silenced pistol

Jackals (sniper):I'd say that they'd be similar to ODSTs with a VISR mode but instead of a cool way of spawning they'd get double scope for all weapons. 2X scope on AR, 4X scope on BR and Carbine. 20X scope for snipers etc. They'd have less grenades than ODSTs as well. No equipment use.

Starting Weapons: Covenant sniper rifle and carbine

Hunters: Hey why not? They'd have awesome melee power and more stamina but they'd be slow as heck and have very little jump. They would have to be different than hunters we've seen up until now as they would have to be able to pick up weapons and use grenades and equipment etc. That or they could be kept the same as they are but have unlimited fuel rod and hunter laser ammo.

Grunts: Hey we've got hunters why not grunts as well?
Special ability similar to martyrdom in Call Of Duty, when you die you gain the ability to run around for 5seconds with plasma grenades primed and ready to get your own back on that sleaze that no-scoped you.
Obviously less health and stuff but they'd be fun nonetheless, maybe they could have an ability to carry health packs or something to heal other players with.

Marines: Regular good ol' fashioned marines. Similar to ODSTs but without VISR and therefore they get use of equipment and less grenades. Some sort of vehicle speciality such as mildly autotracking turrets, faster driving speed and faster get in/get out time would make them worth playing as.
Same health pack carrying function as grunts.

Jackals (with arm shields):With a bit more health than that of a sniper jackal and an arm mounted energy shield this character class would be useful for defense of a base. The shield would be activated in a similar way to the Spartan-3 invisibility, it'll run out after a time but recharge again for another use (only usable with a one handed weapon, when activated the game will switch you to your one handed weapon or leave you with no weapon if no 1 hand weapon is available). Full use of equipment.

Post your ideas here as well, any more classes you would add, what you would change, new ideas.

All covenant except brutes spawn with plasma grenades, brutes with spike grenades. Humans spawn with frags.

I don't expect any of this to be in the game but this is how i think it could work if it did happen.

Motion trackers:
The only characters with motion trackers would be brutes, spartan 2s, spartan 3s and elites.
Smaller characters would have smaller circles on enemy motion trackers and slower characters (like hunters) would be more faded dots and therefore harder to see on motion tracker, this applies to characters crouching or walking slowly.
Spartan 3s would not show up on motion trackers when invisible.

Health packs: Obviously characters who use stamina such as ODSTs and marines will need health packs to replenish health as they don't have shields. Health packs would spawn in bases and at key points on maps and could be carried by (how to put this nicely) useless characters like marines and grunts to heal other more useful characters.

Map size, gameplay and amount of players: I'm thinking at least 16 on 16 games here. Maps the size of the ones in Section 8 and lots of objectives. Either lots of flags to capture, lots of bases to blow up or even territory capture. Push the front forward from 50-50 to 80-20 to win or something like that.

Capture the flag: Same as nowadays except with more flags all being stolen at the same time. Maybe 5 different bases each with a flag to capture.

Bomb: Once again multiple bases which you have to get your team in to and rig the explosive charges. Once the base has been destroyed though it actually becomes destroyed. The base becomes a non spawn area for that team and all the weapon spawns inside it disappear.

Territories: Capture the base. When your team captures one of the enemy team's bases you get new spawn points there and the other team loses their spawns there.

Team slayer: Like now but on a bigger scale. Players will probably be more inclined to choose Spartan-2s, Elites and Brutes in slayer matches as they are more powerful and more balanced. A few support classes would still be welcome though and there would be a lot more strategy involved than in slayer matches nowadays.

Vehicles: As the maps are gonna have to be big we'll need big vehicles. Phantoms, pelicans and those U-Shaped covenant dropships (spirits) would all have to be included to get players from base to base, maybe vultures, and longswords as well. This would obviously mean that bases would need some heavy anti-air so that would mean mannable anti-air turrets on top of each base, or even auto-turrets.
Fast ground vehicles would be needed too for smaller maps. An elephant with super-turbo would be good.

I'm not sure it would be Halo if there were classes like this. I think what's made Halo so popular is that everybody is starting with the same thing and has an equal chance. It's kind of what makes Halo so neat and sets it apart from games like Battlefield and Call of Duty.

I agree with you that my ideas of marines and grunts are a bit weak but i think people would play as grunts for the lulz.
Hunters probably wouldn't work as giving them the ability to use actual guns is a bit farfetched. If they just kept the arm cannon though they could still work, they could switch between fuel rod cannon and hunter laser with unlimited ammo.
Maybe if they didn't have the ability to use actual guns i would make them have better stamina regeneration.

The one thing i did like about Section 8 (apart from the spawning) was the big maps with large objectives. I think that would be how it would work, if so then you could do similar things such as hacking data terminals or maybe rigging bombs to destroy bases to win. If the game was like that then the marine class would work better and be of more use if it could hack faster.

Yeah hunters probably wouldn't happen. Spartan 3s are only weaker because of the armour but they get cool stealthy stuff like camo, which has just given me an idea.

Could do although the idea would probably be to have the weaker characters protected by the stronger ones so that they could do their job without worrying about how underpowered they are compared to, say, a spartan.

You obviously didn't read any of my primary post. I specifically stated that i didn't think classes would happen and that i didn't want them to happen. I'm just saying that if they did this is how i would want them to go down.

Maybe there could even be two types of Jackal, one with a shield and one for long ranged weaponry without shield. I should also probably write starting weapons for each character class as they would have to be different for each class.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

I wouldn't mind Bungie exploring a Class system, but I would rather just have a huge variety of player models to choose from.

Yeah i hope it stays true to the multiplayer system we know and love as well. I think more armour perms and brutes in MM would be really cool.

Um... I like Halo? I don't really know what to say. I'm a student at the moment, I hope to become a criminal profiler, and I enjoy pretty much everything as long as it's good.

Wh would you even want classes? I'm perplexed by this. Halo has worked perfectly up until now, so why do you want to change it?

Thanks. If you have any suggestions on how to make jackals hunters marines etc a better idea then i'm open to suggestions. I don't want this just to be me and my ideas. I want other people to provide input to see how people would want a class system in halo to exist if it ever did happen.

Ok will add vulture to vehicles, also elephants would be good if they were faster i think. Longsword and shortsword as well.
