There is a big difference making models and concept art to actually getting a job doing the same thing. Ive been associated with a few halo game mods but that was all for free, Im still in uni and I like to think when I finish I could but its highly competitive sector and ive got a few years to go before I consider it a viable option. The only good point I have for me is that I dont concentrate on one particualr skill, I can model and paint/draw as well as limited animation skills. With patience and practice by next year ill be better but onnly time will tell.
With the job market over here in England as it is anyway even getting a job in my local supermarket is hard to some by. Many of my friends with 2:!'s and firsts have yet to get any work even part time and its been many months since graduation. Id also like to think things will have picked up in the next two years for when I fininsh my masters?
We whall see, fingers crossed hey!

Many people dont know that google sketchup is a powerful tool its not just for low poly stuff.
Usually id be worried as nobody would hire somebody with just SU skills but im also fully versed in 3dsmax and have used lightwave & maya frequently. However nothing beats SU for its speed and if I need to refine or use subdivision or animation or anything I want to do that I cant in SU I just export in 3ds format to max, however I haven't done that on this project yet. Once the models are complete ill UV map in max as SU has no texture mapping feature.
You should give it a go I only started 3D when I was 16 as something to play with since then ive never looked back, its got me into University 'without' interview and now is going to get me on a masters degree course a year early (so far so good, second round interviews after christmas fingers crossed).

Well ive finalized the battle armor now, its missing a few items such as spotlights etc and its antenna but other than that the models finished and ive uploaded some new pics so go to the site and check it out.

I've got a quick question for you, if you don't mind:

How does the geo look after being imported from Sketchup? My friend was showing me a model in Maya that he started with SU, and it was very messy. There were a mix of tris, quads, and ngons scattered all over the place. It was... messy, and almost scary.

Have you found a particular method that helps make the imported geometry cleaner when being imported?

Its actually the other way around SU is pretty clean its when you convert to 3ds it gets messy. However ive never had any problems and if it is messy a quick clean up in maya or max doesn't take very long. It usually only gets a bit dirty where you have extreme curves or lots of subdivision. However you can just purge the model from an option in the meny before you export and its fine. I use Sketchup Pro maybe thats why it doesnt happen its about £350 compared with the normal one thats free. Its easy to go from SU to maya its coming from maya into SU is where the nightmares start.

I just saw your concept for the Repair Station. I have to say it was hard to envision it while reading the books but that looks like something similar to what I saw.
Btw I have some ideas that I'd like to share with you about your story line.

well im using 'sketchup pro' so they are .3ds files! Sketchup Pro is not the same as sketchup, pro is £350 and I use it for the simple reason I can export in .3ds.

.skp & .3ds are only different in the way the geometry looks in the wireframe. The actual models themselves are identical. What you make in 3dsmax you can make in SU and vice versa. .3ds is only a file extension meaning it can only be opened by specific software. For example Lightwave files are .lwo and cannot be opened in max but the models produced in each are identical, you understand.

Thats why I dont understand what you said? Its much more difficult to model like this in SU compared to max I thought you would be more impressed about that lol, oh well each to his own.

if you want to get a job in the industry you need to be able to model or animate organics, that's what most studios are interested in now.

it's good to know someone else who can go from concepts to the final rendering and animation, which is somehting i find makes modelling and texturing much easier.

what do you use for texturing? is it all just separate polys or do you create the textures in a programme like photoshop and uv map them on?

yeah i can do organics but I use 3dsmax for that im actually upgrading to 9 later today.
Yeah it looks better in your portfolio if you go right through the design phase to pre-builds and mocks ups then to final animation & rendering, it shows you have a workflow and can plan things.
The things on the site ive linked too here are just separate polys but thats because I always texture last. When the modeling is complete ill UV map them in max and create texture maps in photoshop.
You will see some organic modeling soon when I make some ODST characters and brutes, im waiting to get the new mudbox first then it will be smooth sailing from there!

Ahh one of us or both or us are confused then haha. The ODST animation is just a small side project. My real halo project over at scifi meshes.com does take place a decade after the end of halo 3, I hadnt realized I had mentioned it to anybody on these forums, yeah in that case your story does apply. I havent written up an extensive backstory but I do have a sort of codex ive written. Ill email it to you and you can write th backstory if you want to give it a try. If im not happy with something ill work with you to change it but so far so good. Ive re-read your story you sent me and its good, there a few nitpicks you would have to change and some military doctrine you would have to add for instance the CO wouldn't slap another serviceman on the back of the head in that sort of environment, especially navy personnel. And apart form that just a few bits of grammer nothing important. Ill send you the info I have when ive got time thanks for the help. You should join scifi meshes and talk through my thread there its easier to navigate than the horror story that is bungie.net lol

I know, I know, I meant I'm not as impressed since they were made in sketchup rather than 3dmax Autodesk or something of the like, though they are still beautiful.

Hah, I believe I made the mistake my friend. I will continue writing the story line. I also just realized I too have an ODST story that takes place during the events of Halo 2 and 3. ^_^ So I'll go ahead and send you that if you'd like.

Ill try and get it over later tonight snwed under with uni work at the moment so havent had time to write it up neet as its handwritten so far ive scanned it in but no way you could read my shorthand in a million years haha.
What ive got is sort of the state of the universe and whats going on. I havent got a story so you can do whatever you want as long as you stick to the unverse im writing it in. Ill probably be posting it in some of the actual images also if you dont mind, we'll see how it goes ey!/

EDIT: Here is a brief overview, I havent gone into too much detail just an overview of how things stand>>>

The Humans & Elites are still in a strong alliance as the the split within the covenant has caused a full on civil war. Apart form the elites and brutes the other races are mostly divided with factions fighting for both sides. Although the human fleet and worlds where decimated in the Human Covenant war the elites still had a sizeable presence in the galaxy and for now have held off any further incursions into allied space. This has given the humans time to rebuild, nothing like they once where but they now have a dozen colonies outside the sol system, and many smaller outposts and stations.
The humans industrial capabilities are in ruins for the most part with most efforts going towards rebuilding worlds and supporting the hundreds of thousands or refugees.

Human technology has advanced significantly in the past decade with vast amounts of research into covenant (supplied by the elite allies ) and forerunner technology. The elites and humans have a massive R&D programme at incorporating forerunner tech into their ships. In this way the human fleet despite its small size can still hold its own in naval engagements with the covenant remnant.

As for the current war itself the covenant separatists outnumber the allied forces 4-1 however the superior technology and combat skill is in the allies favour. The Elites are at total war but spare a single fleet in human space to help fortify the human defences during the reconstruction as they know they will depend on the humans later on.

The humans attitude towards there new allies are divided but positive for the most part, The elites admit they were misled but an underlying hatred exists among some individuals especially most of the refugees who lost their homes and families. Among the militaries of both races however there is a mutual respect and as a whole the human race is thankful for the help the elites have provided in support & humanitarian roles over the last 10 years.
When or if the allies are successful things may change in time but as both races are now united under a single cause for now things are peaceful.
There are only a handful of humans stationed on elite ships and facilities mostly ONI personnel and special forces, however its not unusual to find elites, and other allied covenant on human vessels, especially the newer hybrid ships.

(Forerunner engineers also play a role among human ships since the civil war but I haven't put too much thought into this yet so feel free to elaborate.)

As for the flood although the mobile threat was destroyed in out galaxy specimens still exist in forerunner installations throughout our galaxy. A special combined fleet exists solely to seek out and catalogue remaining forerunner installations.
This is mostly a scientific venture but stringent safety protocols are in effect to reduce the risk of contamination & infection (Ill go into more detail on this later).

There is a Spartan programme active but the subjects are still over a decade from active deployment in the field. However bionic augmentation has been used on specialized units although nowhere near the quality of a Spartan they do fill the gap between the ODST & SPARTAN II.

All of these points have more detail to them and if you need to know anything else let me know. If your writing a story and need to know specific details such as the specifications of a hybrid ship etc etc ill provide them also.
