Buggy virus is right

Score one for me.

No nothing can go onto the wings this is a SSTO craft (single stage to orbit) it has to be as streamlined as possible for re-entry. The intakes used for atmospheric flight have flaps that fold up so further streamline the design.

Oh i get it, I thought it was a purely inter-vacuum vehicle, and so I thought, "those wings are pretty pointless"

yeah basically i based the design on the X-33 testbed, check this bad boy out:

X-33

The smaller one in this pic was the prototype was 90% complete when nasa withdrew the funding. The middle one 'venture star' was what the actual ship would have been and replace the shuttle. It used the aerospike engine which they actually made it you can see it below, unlike the shuttle it didnt need any external tanks or boosters, it took off vertically just like the shuttle and landed on an airfield much like the shuttle.

Hey Liam, could you give me a quick run down on how to make those complex models on SU please?

I am looking into starting 3-D modeling. I want to be a doctor (or engineer) but if those don't work, I would go into game design.

well download and install SU and follow the tutorial that comes with it to get the basic idea and then ill make something in SU and then video it and post the file here. Best getting SU7 free version then you can follow exactly what I do.

You should know I can only teach you the basics and how to construct complex geometry as well as a few tricks and shortcuts but it will depend on you for your results. The software is only a tool at the end of the day and one ive been using for a few years at that so dont expect any instant results.

Those shuttles for going out of the atmosphere look very flat and thick, not to mention wide... I thought they were re-entry vehicles.

to re enter something you have to go out first lol.
I think they are wide and thick to hold the payload, engine and fuel. However they are very aerodynamic and take off vertically. I guess the lockheed guys know what they where doing when they built it do ill stick with it. The HOTOL design looks great also.

Oh, the design isn't yours?

no its an actual nasa funded lockheed design, they where building the prototype was 90% complete and they built the engine and it worked but then funding was cut before its test flight (the x-33) the model i made is my design but i based it on the x-33 concept. Its a shape the shuttle is going its only got 5 flight left and they are de-orbitibg the ISS in a few years unless they pull off a budget extension or change there plans :-(

A lot of these are amazing, great work!

Oh, and if you arent too lazy, try to link all your pics onto the OP so it would be easier to view.

May I ask what programs it is you are using?

And also, I too have nothing to say other than you have done a magnificent job.

I think he uses CAD or Sketchup for these

Google SU for modelling and 3dsmax for texturing. My max copy is for windows and havent instaled it on my new mac yet so using blender for texturing at the moment.

  • 11.30.2009 4:39 AM PDT

I have already used SU, however only for basic models. And a video would be great =)

My main issue is creating complex geometry, and then texturing it.

You just need to take your time, a good model can take weeks or months its not something you can do in a few days!
Patience and practice are the best way to learn its up to you how you learn. What do you mean when you say complex geometry? You mean organic shapes or detail?

they are good, you should download some of the plugins from sketchucation to enhance your models, you can also render your models and add a pic in the warehouse!

I think that is my problem, when I photoshop, it takes at most 5 to 7 hours.

I mean both. And how do you get those renders?

Well it depends what you are using photoshop for why does it take that long to add some lights?

I mean both. And how do you get those renders?

well for organic modelling just keep practicing, head over to sketchucation.com and pick up some of the ruby plugins and watch a few of the tutorials. As for adding details well thats up to you? You can always add more detail I cant really tell you how to detail a model it has to come for you, try using some reference images for help.

As for renders you need render software!
Vue is the best but you might find it a bit pricey, vray is a good alternative but some of the cheaper options $40-$50 such as podium are great also.
Kerktheyra is very good and free! If you have SU pro you can export to other apps such as max, blender, zbrush, maya you name it!
Have a look round see what suits you best, Im going to get vue in the new year I think its defiantly a vray beater!

But for those ships, did you have any reference images?

What are the long lines on Pluto's docking station? Are they Anttenae?

Nice work by the way. Youy should know that the Cargo freighters are more like big rectangles with...you know. And the docking station could use more 'metal', to its sorrounding structure, making the protecting plates.

When you can, I would like to see color for the docking station. with lights and a nice background. Keep it up.

PS: Im just saying what could you do to improve it to its best, and don't take it the wrong way.

Dont worry i dont take constructive ctitisizm the wrong way I give enough of it out around here lol:
Yes they are antenna! Well the cargo freighters I have made are big rectangles but the ship you are referring to from the site has been cancelled. It is a docking station but more importantly its a shipyard and refit station so those exposed sections are needed as they are the scaffold. I will color it and add lights font worry but its a big model and will be a -blam!- to render im leaving that till last lol.
Anyway some updates on the pelican.

Your new pelican looks... odd... maybe make the wings a bit shorter and wider?
