I'm xAssault12x, and I love the Halo Universe. Discussion please!
Whenever I play Halo and I find myself in a Banshee or Hornet flying around a map I often wish that if either took a certain amount of damage that is close to the amount it takes to be destroyed that my plane would crash instead of just get blown up by one bullet.
Here's an example. Say a Hornet has 100 hit point. (I don't know how many it really has so just play along.) If the Hornet takes a lot of damage and its hit points are reduced to 10 then it can still fly, but if it's hit point drop below 10 but not all the way to zero then it will crash.
When I say crash I don't meen some predetermined automatic crash routine that takes over. I meen you should start losing control of the plane and maybe controls stop responding and you start to lose altitude. This would allow someone to attempt to save themselves. If you are lucky and know how to fly a a Hornet or Banshee or whatever, then you have a chance to successfuly crash land. Once you crash land you should be extremely weak and your shields should take twice the normal time to start recharging, and even when they begin to recharge they should recharge at half the normal rate.
This would allow whoever shot the plane down a chance to still get the kill if the pilot survived by running up and shooting him and it would also make sure that people would do whatever they could to not crash at all.
You get a chance to survive a crash but you are very weak if you do, and if an enemy finds you not long after you crash then they have a huge advantage as they rightfully should.
Crash landing would be awesome. I think Bungie should include this, and there would be a cool achievement to go with it. I call it Crashtakular. You can only get this by splatering someone while crash landing.
EDIT:
Some people have given me the idea that some form of this could work for ground vehicles as well. I think the way a system like this would wokr for ground vehicles would be a disable system. When a vehicle's hit point goes critical some part of it stops working or gets blown off. The effected part is determined by where the vehicle was hit with the disabling blow.
Example 1:
A Scorpion rolls over a hill and starts shelling a base. The Scorpion has already taken some damage so it is weak but still fully functional. A guy on the other team fires a rocket and the tank driver doesn't see it. The rocket smashes into the front left tread drive section and destroys it. The rocket pushed the hit points into the critical level so the rocket caused the destruction of the front left drive section. Now the tank is imobalized, but the turret still works. In this case the tank is in one pice but cannot move.
Example 2:
A warthog is driving around the map causeing hell for the opposing team. It takes a lot of damage and is close to critical when a guy comes out a unloads a clip of AR into the Hog. The majority of the rounds hit the front right tire pushing the Hog into critical hit points. The front right tire gets blown out and is now flat. Since the Hog was driving fast this causes a major change in how the vehicle handles and the driver loses control. The last part is not a predetermined reaction. The physics simply change and the driver failed to compensate. The warthog crashes into a tree and is soon destroyed when the enemy team surrounds it.
Example 3:
A Gauss Warthog is driving around killing stuff, but it has taken some damage. A freak even it about to occur in which both systems interact. The Hog jumps off a hill and ramps into the air. At the exact same time a Banshee that also has taken a fair amount of damage is flying low and fast trying to avoid gunfire. The Hog suddenly appears over the hill and as the Banshee tries to avoid it the Banshees right wing smashes into the Gauss turret. Both vehicles are pushed into critical levels so the right wing of the Banshee is destroyed and the Gauss turret is ripped off of the Hog killing the gunner. The Banshee loses control and spirals into a tree and explodes. However, the driver of the Warthog survives and is now driving a Gauss Hog with no Gauss turret.
Sound good or not?
