This is a concept I have had in my head since Wednesday. The end result is almost completely different from what I originally envisioned, but I do like how it turned out.

Hmm...

I think it looks really nice, however, the Spartan maybe should look more relaxed... not so tense... Does anyone else kind of feel that way? If you could somehow have the spartan have both arms down, that would be cool. Otherwise, this looks awesome.

I did the best I could with Halo 3 would let me do. While I agree, the tense pose of the Spartan could be that he is apprehensive about Reach, etc.

If there were a grenade in his hand, I personally think it would look better.

Nice.
I really like the dark and gritty lighting, it sets a great mood.
I think the pose is ok. Yeah, maybe something more "relaxed" would work better. But as it is, I think it's fine.

Nice work.

Thats an interesting thought Cloaked. However, I think that the grenade would make his hand look more like a ball due to the lighting.

Thank you. When I thought of the image, the Spartan would have been 'relaxed.' However, Halo 3 makes it extremely difficult to get your Spartan in any sort of 'relaxed' position. Although I technically could move his arms around, I am afraid it would make the image look "choppy," and therefore, ruin it.

While I appreciate the praise, please tell me how I can improve it.

"Find The Bomb?!
Find The Bomb?!
I'm Looking For The Flag!
What The Heck Is Assualt!?"

Dual weapons reloading could do for the "relaxed" look everyone wants, though I think it's fine

Indeed. I haven't had XBL for a long time, but I still come on her everyday.

Whoa, I really like it! Although I do agree the Spartan could use a more relaxed position. Perhaps crouched?

I my personally opinion that is the best pose of a spartan you are going to get with a rifle.

If only my laptop has enough memory to open paint.net cos I'm too cheap for photoshop

Nice wallpaper, I think maybe some more detail into the background

No matter how many seals are killed by sharks a year, it never seems to be enough :D

Damn! The whole thing is so intesne! Wich i really think is awesome. The blurs around parts of the spartan, the sun behind him that makes most of him really dark but the shield emmiting parts of his armor shine! It is really just a brilliant piece of work.

PS. Can you check out my story Rise of Harvest some time?

That is a good point. However, I did want to use the AR, because I am pretty sure that is a confirmed weapon for Reach (based off the picture).

I did want a standing position because I wanted to create a "movie poster" type feel, and I don't think crouching would be the best way to do so.

Perhaps if a Bungie employee sees the comments, they will decide to allow for more relaxed positions in Reach ^.^

You can get CS4 for $200 if you are a student. That is what I did.

What do you mean by more detail? I personally wanted to create a simple background, especially since we know nothing about Reach.

Thank you =) The lighting of his armor was more of an accident than anything else. But I'm glad you think it turned out okay.

PS. Already done.

How did you get the Halo Reach font? Great pic by the way

  • 10.25.2009 2:49 PM PDT

I didn't download it if that is what you are asking.

What I did was:

I got a wallpaper, and then cropped the text out. Then I put the text on the image, and set the blending mode to 'lighten' so that the black part of the image would disappear, leaving only the text.

RIP Deathpimp72 - A friend, a brother, a man who will never be forgotten. This place isn't going to be the same without you.

RIP ~B.B.

Nice use of color and good composition, I like it.

I'm not sure how I feel about that blur though. I understand the effect you are going for but it feels like it needs to be toned down slightly, particularly around his left hand. Don't get me wrong, I think it looks cool, but it doesn't quite work, in my opinion. Maybe keep it the way it is for the background, but dial it down slightly for the Spartan in the foreground?

Also, I think it might be interesting to try playing around with the placement of the text. Right now it feels like the font and Spartan are both sort of struggling for my attention. Plus, the text is kind of being cut in half by the planet in the background, which could potentially use some adjustment. It might be as easy as bumping the placement of the text down a little bit more.

The position of the text also sort disrupts the natural flow of the image I think. The composition of this image would normally tend to make the eye lead smoothly from the planet on the left and then down to the Spartan. However, the text being placed so high sort of adds a little speed bump to that. I'm not sure if you know what I mean, and many people may disagree, but that's how I feel about it.

Anyway, those are just a couple minor suggestions from an amateur about an otherwise fantastic piece of work! Keep it up, and keep us posted if you make any revisions.

Edit: Oh! One more thing! Think about your negative space. You've got a big blank area in the top-right that feels like it might need something else in there. Maybe if you increase the size of the Spartan it will help fill up the image a little bit.

Again, I'm not trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about, I'm just offering my suggestions.

Many gave their lives so that we could live on. I intend to honor them by remembering them. Remember Cyborg. Remember John. Remember Noble.

I like the wallpaper. But were you thinking about adding some more spartans, planets or something like that? Not that I think the wallpaper needs it, I'm plainly curious.

  • 10.29.2009 6:31 AM PDT

To George, no I wasn't really thinking about adding anything. I just wanted to focus the whole image on the mystery Spartan. I am not big when it comes to 'deeper' meaning. For example, some would say that the dead space symbolizes the little we know about the game. I personally just think it looks nice.

Thank you. Originally it was going to be blue.

I'm not sure how I feel about that blur though. I understand the effect you are going for but it feels like it needs to be toned down slightly, particularly around his left hand. Now that you mention it, I do agree. However I think that it becomes a problem when the large size of the image is viewed, however if I still have the PSD, I will tone down the blur.

Also, I think it might be interesting to try playing around with the placement of the text. Right now it feels like the font and Spartan are both sort of struggling for my attention. Plus, the text is kind of being cut in half by the planet in the background, which could potentially use some adjustment. Like I said above, if I have the PSD file, I will fix it.

I guess that this depends more on how you look at the image. When I look at it, I start directly below the text, then move to the Spartan. Once I finish, I glance at the text.

However your point it is a valid one.

Anyway, those are just a couple minor suggestions from an amateur about an otherwise fantastic piece of work! Keep it up, and keep us posted if you make any revisions.
I am no more of an amateur than you. I have had photoshop for about 10 months.

Edit: Oh! One more thing! Think about your negative space. You've got a big blank area in the top-right that feels like it might need something else in there. Maybe if you increase the size of the Spartan it will help fill up the image a little bit.
You should read what I said to George. I like dead space, especially if the image has a few focal points, and is not an action shot. I just think it looks nice, and makes everything more calm? Because the Spartan is so tense (Halo 3) I subconciously made the choice to add dead space to kind of balance the tension out. I didn't want a tense image, I wanted more mystic if you get what I'm saying.

Again, I'm not trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about, I'm just offering my suggestions.

Don't worry, I don't know what I'm saying either.
