Subject: Back to the Roots: More CE than 3

Internet forums are such funny places. All of a sudden the popular opinion on here is to turn Reach into CE. Sure CE was a good game, at the time. Halo 2 had my favorite story, but ya know what? before halo 3 came out everyone complained about how bad the halo 2 story was. Each game has been better then the last. You guys are just tired of 3 and ready for Reach. Just chill on the "turn it into CE thing." trust me, if they really did you would all be complaining about the series not innovating and taking a step backwards.

I don't think people want it to mimick Halo1 though rather they want Bungie's typical attention to refinements and additions to carry forward, but a greater understanding for what worked better in Halo1 ie scale, less linear aproach to scenarios and a sense of belonging to the adventure unfolding

I love anything Halo but even i would admit i didn't feel all that connected to any of the games really that have followed - ODST did a better job in places i guess

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Lol. You thought Halo 2's multiplayer was phenomenal. Phenomenal for glitches, poorly balanced weapons, and texture pop-in. That was how phenomenal the game was...
While it was a glitchy game, Halo 2 so far has the best maps in the entire trilogy while Halo 3 has some of the worst.

Halo 2 also has a better storyline than Halo 3.
And better characters. And fewer plot holes.

Marine Corps.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

I thought Halo 2 campaign gameplay was the worst of all Halo campaigns thus far. That doesn't say much because they are all good... but still.

The only game in the Halo franchise that has actually pulled off both excellent quality and fun gameplay is Halo Wars. Although the story wasn't that great, the campaign was enjoyable for some of the later missions and the cutscenes are some of the most amazing things I've ever seen an Xbox 360 pump out. Not to mention the detail of the veichles, given the scale of the game. And Ensemble finally pulled off the seemingly impossible task of making a RTS game easy and fun to play on a console, so what do Microsoft do? They shut down the greatest RTS making company of all time.

They seriously need to take their time with Reach like they did with Halo Wars (remember how many times it was delayed?). A 2011 release wouldn't be so bad, as long as the game makes up for the damage ODST has done to the franchise.

A few years from now nothing you do in this game will have mattered. Your rank, kill/death ratio, win/loss ratio, will get you no where. So, if your going to play the game, do it for the enjoyment.

ce only good trate was the ai
halo 2 had better gameplay
halo 3....uh, you finished the fight?
odst - was too awesome for words.
reach- will, most likly be the best in the series.
Way to back up those opinions with any kind of factual knowledge that can support your case.

Reach MMO. Here's to hoping.

And the people that believe "the hardcore playlists would be more popular if the rules were strictly MLG" can come off it, now. If you're not willing to support something close to your own setup, there's no reason for us to believe that cloning our own lists and stripping the variety down will attract more people. -- Shishka, Bungie.net

It sounds like you are making complaints about the campaign. With all of the Halo campaigns I am sure I have spent around 50-75 hours. With all of the multiplayer it has literally been 100's and 100's of hours.

Sure I hope the campaigns get better, but that is not what I am most interested in by any means. Halo 3 is still a great MP game, but I hope they can raise the bar even higher.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Well for one, how did the Arbiter, Johnson, and Miranda get to Earth before the Master Chief without any assistance from other Elites? ODST also introduces many plotholes and inconsistencies with Halo 3.

However, my biggest gripe with Halo 3 was not storyline (even though it sucked), it was the lack of Michael Wincott.

Corn, Oil, and Wine... We need more wine...

CE campaign maps, and multiplayer maps (PC) were amazing, and far out do any of the crud bungie has given us after CE's release...

Well for one, how did the Arbiter, Johnson, and Miranda get to Earth before the Master Chief without any assistance from other Elites? ODST also introduces many plotholes and inconsistencies with Halo 3. MC spent 9 days cruising around the Sol System onboard the Dreadnought, as told by Uprising and the "no elites" BWU. They started with the cruiser Rtas was going for, then most likely switched for a smaller vessel from the Second Fleet of Homogenous Clarity, arriving a few days before the 17th, going via the Orbital facility.

Anything else with ODST? Portal size can be explained with Halo 3's limited draw distance (40km=limited?!), and the diggers surviving down there can be explained by the UNSC Fleet being busy with the aggressive Covenant in orbit. The only thing I can find is that the Portal seemed rather revealed that early.

Way to back up those opinions with any kind of factual knowledge that can support your case. Your wall isn't much better. You said "IMO the H2 and H3 campaigns and stories are worse than H1" and didn't even put any opinions that resulted in these opinions.

Of course I don't mean in it in the literal sense. Halo CE was the best developed of the current Halo games and that in part to the fact it was not rushed into release. The main point I am trying to convey is that Bungie should not attempt to set a release deadline before the game is fully complete.

  • 10.19.2009 6:54 PM PDT

yep. halo 1 was better in some ways. and the game should return to it.

I make a legitimate thread on the most logical choice for the next Bond actor, and you take that away from me by creating a parody thread indirectly connecting my thread to yours.

I hope your kids have bad influences and develop bad personalities. I wish this with all my heart.

I actually loved ODST's campaign. And I agree with you on the campaign part, as long as we don't get a library level.

  • 10.19.2009 7:04 PM PDT

While I understand your concern, you must also understand that multiplayer is what gives a game its re playability. No matter how complex, fun, deep, or awesome the campaign is, it ultimately comes down to the multiplayer.

However, that is not to say that a campaign has to bad in order for the multiplayer to be good. What makes a good campaign? It's length? It's difficulty? To me, it is neither of those (mostly).

To me, what makes a good campaign is:
1) Good story
2) Little or no plot holes
3) Epic battles
4) No cheesy cinematics, but in depth ones that allow you to connect with characters
5) Missions that make sense

And as for multiplayer, these are my thoughts.

I think the story needs to take itself a little more seriously. Halo CE had a great balance of plot and character development/establishment. The following installments (that is, Halo 2 and 3) have been for the most part, all about advancing the plot. The plot is quite amazing, but it seemed that the characters missed the development they needed. This is one of the reasons I didn't feel much of anything for the characters that died in Halo 3. In fact, Halo 3 was the worst for this type of thing, with a great but incredibly dry-in-presentation story.

In Halo 3, it is assumed that you understand the personalities of all of the characters already, which means that there has to be no dynamic development at all? Hell no.

ODST had a great story in my opinion, with great atmosphere and plot, but again, a lack of real character development. When you narrow it all down, every character is just an archetype of some sort with a few cheesy one-liners here and there. ODST was written in a month though, which is incredible for the quality displayed.

I hope that Reach's writing and script is full of rich and detailed characters that we will care about and become attached to. It needs characters that, when expressing emotion, will impact us, the player, in one way or another. Because the characters will have a high probability of being never before seen, it will probably be the case.

personally i never played ce, and i never got to witness the halo 2 mulitplayer... but from halo 2, to 3, to ODST... the storyline is flowing.... from what i have, you are a solider, you are figting an ailen species that is ripping itself apart. the enemy becomes your ally, end of halo 2... then halo 3 happens... you land and start fighting... somewhere between halo 2 and sierra 117, DARE got information about the covenants plans... then MC stopped them and you finished the fight...... Hopefully Reach will either end that saga or start up a new one.... if Reach ends the saga, then master cheif will land, and start fighting again... (how oroiginal) or they start a new saga while a select few bungie employees start halo 4, while the rest of bungie make Halo Reach 2, 3, 4 etc....
then Reach could be a marines story, set up like ODST, or something entirely different...

However unless bungie gives up, Reach will still be bought, played, and adored...

a few things (and bungie i cannot stress this enough...)to make reach better.

1:theater, halo 3, Ka-Blam! theater is introduced, and amasing... but no skipping forward... but i could manage... then campagin you could not rewind...
Well ODST came along... i got halfway through campagin and went to firefight, but when i went to theatre i missed a great photo op at the end of my hour long firefight session... and i never got it... i couldnt rewind... i was devistated...

2: if forge makes a comeback then let copy select tools, AI (ODST can handle it fairly well) and more sandbox maps...

my hopes for reach are set high... hope it works out...

How to spell "space"?

S-P-ACE! SPACE!

Definitely.

Halo CE revolutionized FPS games. Halo 3... not so much.

R.I.P. Halo 2

Agreed, they need to bring that feeling of urgency that Halo 1 had in a lot of the game. They also need to make the music more prominent than Halo 3 and coordinate it as good as they did in Halo 1, it did wonders for the epic feel on Halo 1.

Are you being sarcastic? Sorry if you're not, but I just can't tell. Anyway, Halo CE has a much higher skill gap than both Halo 2 and Halo 3.

CE took MOAR skill. Have you heard of "No Aim assist"? I knew you hadn't! It's where your Xbox doesn't do 75% of your aiming for you! (Gasp!!!)
