HALO is starting to become the new Star Wars for a lot of people out there.
except for episode 3 the new star wars movies were not very good and especially episode 1 has forever tainted the entire series. (episode 2 was forgettable)
Bungie probably does not want to run the series into the ground, they want to keep Halo as a classic forever and to do this, they have to make sure that they quit while they are ahead, not to mention that the story has pretty much run it's course.
In fact bungie parted from microsoft probably because microsoft wouldn't let them do anything besides work on halo, so the fact that they left suggests they want to move onto a new project.
Also, after Reach comes out Bungie will have spent a decade making one series of games, I don't blame them for wanting to move on.
So in no way do I fault bungie for wanting to quit while they are ahead and start a new genre changing game.
THAT BEING SAID,
Microsoft owns the IP rights to Halo, they can do whatever they want with it, including make crap like Halo Wars... so microsoft will find developers to make new Halo games until it becomes unprofitable.
its on the threshold right now all it takes is for reach to be like odst
