Well this is truly meant as a shining beacon of light in a darken age filled with ummmm, darkness. So, as many of the good denizens of b.net have seen in the past few weeks the amount of spam & unhappy posting has exponentially increased, in EVERY forum now spamming and pointless insults are abounding.

I am a member of The maw, a regular if you may say, and in the past few weeks I have seen changes that frighten and astound me. There are maybe 2-3 on-topic threads on the main page of that forum, and of those, some are pointless gibbering on the prospect of Halo 2 PC.

As always a standard of order & prestige The Septagon remained a hope for the other b.net forums, hardly has spam ever graced this forum, but even now as Marinelever quaintly put the flood has arrived. and not the kind, explodey flood we've all come to know, the evil lurking kind....the bad kind.

I fear that the glory days of b.net have come and gone. Frankly, I'm afraid to admit that they've long passed before my arrival. And even know, when the spam fills the brink of our vision I can only wonder if this situation will improve. I know some forums, especially the Maw, have not been as "lively" as they've used to be, most of the regulars of each forum which by nature, hold the very skeleton that supports each forum are leaving. I fear that the current situations are scaring away long-time members and these people are invaluable.

I do not blame the mods. It is a problem of the entire populace. We CANNOT let these spammers, these cheaters, these Bungie hatez, to propagate their misguided arguments. As a community the best of us must stand forward and make the most, no scratch that, THE BEST, the best threads, the best interesting discussion, the best Halo analysis that has ever been witnessed...it is only by fighting fire with fire that we will succeed. We must drown out the hate, the spam, and the flood, if we fight the fire with our powerful fire we can finally retake the front-page greatness from these spammers, DO not respond to their pointless threads, that is simply a means to further their thread position on any forum. By making our OWN threads, and providing our own fire we can successfully take back the views of the true fans.

It is the forum regulars, the casual viewers, the unfailing moderators, and the steadfast bungie workers that will ensure these forums will flourish. I call upon a time when we can make these forums the BEST they can be, the best. And maybe, just maybe, we can relive, and retake those wonderful glory days.....

At the Something Awful forums you have to pay ten dollars to get in, it really controls all the spammers and such. I doubt these forums would become a forum for people that pay though :(

This is indeed an interesting topic.

Here are a few of my thoughs.

1). I will NEVER fight spam with spam. Ever. End of story.

2). What seems like pointless crap to some can be very interesting to others.

I took a look at the Maw just now. I counted two off-topic post. I may be that what you see as extremly stupid, might be alot more interesting to others. A forum will always have these post. It's weather you label those post spam or not that makes the diffrence.

I will tell you right now that the forum will never be the ultimate 'perfec7ion'. Evewryone has diffrent views on what makes a froum great. That is why we will never get the best halo disscussions going or the best threds. everyone is going to differ on what makes the best.

I get what you saying but I think a little more needs to go into your plan

sorry I didn't make myself clear I usually go intro great explanations and refrences but I'm just tired. It is not spam in a sense that we should fight with, but well written, interesting threads that can be enjoyable to read, it is spam in a sense that we can all do it, it is possible, the spammers thrive on the fact that they create massive amounts of their literature, they make constant threads, and posts in every forum. But if we can overpower their voices (dang I'm using metaphors again)...well look at it this way, interesting posts, valid statements, not unecessary off-topic spam can exponentially improve theses forums, as more and more topics are written the more replies shall result, just like this very thread, the hallmark of a good topic is the # of replies it gets, I know, I know it's hard to define what a good topic is but you can feel it I know, in the way the idea is expressed, the way thr information is presented, the emotion and the writing of the author, many things go into a universally good thread, and by making more of these we can push down the spam into it is just a bad memory.

I'm not asking for a miracle, but I do have faith in this community and I know that there ARE people here who are dedicated and can work together to improve the enjoyability of all the forums by making more intersting powerful topics.

NAH!!! its just people getting really really bored ....heheh

if people are just going around and making spam & otherwise annoying people for their own pleasure just because they're bored then they are a very sad case. It's mainly because people have no friends, and find enjoyment in taking time to piss off other anonmyous people for the most rediculous reasons, I can hardly grasp the logic of spammers.

P.S I was just looking over the forums, it seems either Yoozel or Shiska came and did a "banning-run" on the forums, dozens of threads have been locked, and many of the topic starters have been banned, hopefully order can be maintained once again.

yeah unfortuantely there are at some times it seems, few mods on these forums, however surprsingly not that many are needed at a time, especially when one mod logs in, goes through all the forums locking threads, and banning as he goes, and even if another mod doesn't come on for another 24 hours the majority of order will be restored as long as all the spam is gone. In any system the more people you have with with positions of power the harder it can get to run things. You may think it would be better to add more mods but usually a certain number of them is maintained and until one resigns another is not chosen..at least that's how i THINK it works.

P.S means post-script, sort of a thing to put at an end if you have a few more things to say.

wow, have you looked at The Underground lately? It really is a shame, I feel terrible for all the old-school Bungie fans, I'm a Bungie fan, but I'm not old-school, really, I mean there's just 2 threads on the front page that aren't locked, that's the worst case of spam I've EVER seen.

I too feel underground has been tainted by halo 3 threads out the yin yang. Hardly an oldschool subject. Poor guys.

Well anywho, he's been blacklisted. A prime example of people who consistantly break the rules no matter how many times you tell them.

Now i am so glad this thread has appeared (again). We here at The Septagon merely point people in the right direction and send people on their way. If i see a spammer, i report them. That is how we combat spam. We report them to the moderators who can then warn them or blacklist them.

The only way to fully stop people rule breaking is to have the rules as clear as glass (non- frosted). I think if Bungie were able to find someways of permantly displaying the rules for each forum so they were clearly visible all the time, it would help a great deal.

I think you're right about the threads. If we continue to use the forums as they should be, people will hopefully eventually learn. However, not all people learn and so they get banned.

All in all i think it breaks down to making the forum rules and what you can post in each forum is even clearer and that we continue to report any rule breakers.
~ I know there are stickies, but these seem to have very little impact.

guys please I do not want this thread ruined. Honestly Bungie fan what is it that convinces you to make spam and otherwise annoy people on these forums, do you really have nothing better to do with your time? Or even sadder, does annoying people make you feel good inside? I'm sure if you actually went somewhere else and did something else you'd enjoy doing that a lot more than going on here, taking time to make bogus accounts, and annoying the members of this forum.

Anyways, in my original post I was trying to communicate that not only by ignoring spammers & off-topic threads will we make these forums better. We must make our own threads. Becuase if we just let these spammers make useless threads there's still nothing on the forums to make them more interesting that would even convince people to read the forums, so by making more useful threads and topics we can counter teh spam with our own form.

P.S If this thread's still alive in a few days I won't be posting in it unfortunately. I'll be leaving for camp tommorrow and won't be back in about a month.
