Other than The Septagon and The Underground the other forums on bungie.net are completely useless to anyone wanting to actually discuss relevant issues. The only Moderator activity i ever see on these forums, mainly zanzibar, is either locking or moving posts. In addition to that, forum moderators usually only respond to jerks to make them shutup. The only real reason i can see to keep these forums up, is to house the countless amount of spam that is posted on Bungie.net.

It would be nice if bungie could implement a spam filter or something that could automatically delete topics that have content which doesn't belong on the forums, modding complaints ect. This could possibly help to lessen the amount of people who don't read stickys and disobey forum rules. Also it would help to make the other Bungie.net forums a better place for fans to talk about topics the forums were meant for.

That'd be okay if you were willign to write up the Artificial Intellegent program that knew the difference between a good post and a bad post. And no, dissembodied soul isn't that smart. It only bans blacklisted users with multiple accounts.

Yeah, it'd be great if there was an automated filter that could determine which posts were offensive or dramatically off-topic... if you ever build one, make sure you patent it before putting it up. You'll make a mint.

Seriously, it's fairly simple to enact a "blam" filter; that's just a filter that recognises one word from a list and swaps it with another. It's another thing entirely for a script to figure out that the post is discussing Halo 2 in the Underground, or skateboarding in New Mombasa. "Another thing entirely" meaning "we don't know how to do this yet."

-- Steve points out that parsing text for meaning is pretty much the Holy Grail of AI research.

That'd be nice if that actualy came, but I SERIOUSLY don't see that happening, because its not just "Oh slap the legendary Halo AI on there and its done." Its much more than that, and I don't even know what it is ^_^

And you can't 'dis the flood :)

Chairleg Productions presents: 'Console Wars' and 'Games as Art?' (also on Halo Waypoint).

Yeah, if they could have made a program, don't you think they would have impliamented it already. In the meantime, mods are very handy.

They could have implemented a search bar too, they're just too busy, it's not impossible.

Since this is Bungie.net, 42 is no good... how about 7, 17, 70, 117, 700, etc?

Actually 42 is good.Because it's a multipule of 7.

Exactly, 42 = (7*7) - 7

Well...I think a spam filter could be implemented in the way we all want. A database of words and there connections to related words could be built up from scanning internet content relatively fast. (Amazon.com has a similar thing for books called Uncommon Phrases or something for each book)
Once that database is in place, a forum could be associated with certain words. For instance, Zanzibar could be related to multiplayer, Halo, etc. Then, the filter can stop things from coming in that are more than a few levels away from the base words. For instance, the database might see "shotgun," relate that to "weapon" and that to "multiplayer" So, the post would pass if the allowed number of hierarchies away was less than 4 or something.
However, that wouldn't work anyway because you just read this and would know to include some key words in the post everytime to bypass the filter.
More important, though, is the issue of whether or not it's ethical or right to automatically delete or move someone's post. Hard to say.
I do think, that a really cool solution to the problem would be to have someone's new thread content checked against current topics. So, if you're posting about "I hate modders," then after you hit submit, bungie.net would check for similiar threads and provide links to them. If you didn't think any of them addressed the problem, you could hit submit again. Otherwise, you could enter one of the other threads. It's like a search function, but more streamlined.
Wow, this issue is more interesting than I thought. *ponders* Sure would be a lot of work for Achronos *assumes that drunks don't do much work in closets*

I was thinking more along the lines of whenever a topic is submitted that has content which doesn't belong in the forum like "halo 2 sucks", "i was modded", could be automatically filtered and maybe placed in the flood.

We REALLY need more ninjas. Maybe -blam!- and noob should be blam words? Or replace it with rookie or something - replacing would be interesting and annoying for anyone desperate to break the rules...

Look at the Underground RIGHT NOW.

If you come late, I will tell you that there are TWO unlocked threads on the front page.

I think, also (I'm just full of ideas) that instead of locking threads, you should just delete them. Or, at least lock them for a few minutes and then delete them.

I think also that the links should be re-arranged, so that Zanzibar or the Flood is up the top of the list of links. Everyone knows the only reason the Underground gets so much -blam!- is that it's up the top.

It would help.
