Before we talk about Halo, let's talk about Halo 3. It shares a lot of similarities to its predecessors, but there is one thing it doesn't have the fast paced gameplay of Halo 1 & 2.
Now in the general sense of FPS games, Halo is actually a medium paced shooter, it's not slow paced like Rainbow Six, but it's not an ultra fast game like Unreal. However, for consoles, Halo has a fast paced nature, or should I say, "had" a fast paced nature.
There are a lot of reasons why I believe Halo 3 has a slower pace compared to Halo 1 + 2, I'll list two to keep it short and simple for now. I'll also tell what should be done for Reach to make it faster paced. I'll add more later, either by poster's suggestions, or me adding them on my own.
These first two reasons are, in my opinion, the biggest reasons why Halo 3 has a slower pace.
Player Speed
Gradually, the default player speed has decreased with each Halo game. This is a problem especially for the medium-large size maps because it simply takes longer to traverse a map. Maps like the Pit which are medium sized, seem like football fields because of the slow player speed.
Solution? Increase the default player speed. I think Halo 2's default speed was perfect, not too fast but not too slow.
Map Size
This ties in with player speed. Halo 3 does not have many small maps. The majority of maps are medium sized, which shouldn't really be a problem, but combined with Halo 3's slow player speed it can make maps seem larger then they actually are.
Solution? There should be more small sized maps. Once again referring back to Halo 2, I felt that it had the best balance between small, medium, and large maps.
That's all for now. There are more reasons, but these two again, in my opinion, are the biggest reasons.
